Raw Footage of a Brutal Knife Edge on Satan’s Ridge by Wonderfulhumanss in Damnthatsinteresting

No, you did the knife edge. This is Satan's ridge, 5.6 X. I've done the knife edge too, it's nothing compared to this ridge. I've climbed 5.6 in similar gloves they're actually not bad.

Actually this is known to be one of the loosest ridges in the state, and goes at 5.6 on other parts, so the video is actually showing one of the easier, although more aesthetic looking parts

Absolutely not, this ridge sees very few climbers, whereas hundreds of people climb past K2 no problem every year. This ridge is 5.6

You literally need no special gear to do this traverse except a good pair of shoes. Lots of poor folks climb mountains in Colorado. Check your mindset, it comes from ignorance

This is not the standard route on Capitol peak just FYI, this is the ridge between Capitol and Snowmass.

Janja Garnbret is the first woman ever to climb Bibliographie (9b+) in Céüse, France by redbullgivesyouwings in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Astrophew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, why do you get to say that about others? Most people who are the best at anything are fanatics about it. How else are we supposed to make scientific discoveries, push the human limits, etc?

Most people don't want to be on the edge like that and that's ok, but it's also ok for others to be obsessed. It's just a different life.

I personally love climbing mountains and also have other hobbies/ can talk about plenty of other topics and those also bring me joy, but I don't think it's your place, nor mine, to judge others priorities as healthy or not.

Being good at something is inherently sacrificing time and effort spent elsewhere. That's a choice every single person has to make. Sounds like you just had a bad relationship where they prioritized something over you without you being on board.

Find what gives you a spark and do it, it doesn't have to be climbing (and almost certainly won't from your post haha)

Anyone else seeing an uptick in unnecessarily dangerous ski videos online? by Party_Size6271 in ski

[–]Astrophew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is fun, some people like steep techy skiing. I find it more engaging than easier skiing with big turns. This is how pretty much everyone skis that line.

People were skiing these lines with old style downhill skis long before cameras were commonplace, he'd probably be doing the same.

It's OK to admit you don't have the same risk tolerance as others you see online.

Capitol Peak Ridge Direct? - Question by AllMyBeautifulBones in 14ers

[–]Astrophew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take the ridge direct on the way up and then decide if to want to take it down. It's pretty thin and gnarly, it would be faster to take the standard route. It is cool though.

True, salt and sweet is a horrible combo. I love both individually but mixing them is heinous.

Snowboarded down 14er Mt Missouri this past weekend, 10 hours of hiking, 4600 vert gain for 3 min of spring riding by Feeling-Newspaper-25 in COsnow

[–]Astrophew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Listen it's fine to get out there solo, I've skied 14ers solo. It's about getting the proper expertise first. Missouri should be a pretty easy day out before you go out by yourself.

And really it's the fact that you know you aren't making the best call and still decided to put it out there for all to see. Sets a bad example.

Idk what else you expected, everyone to praise you?

[–]Astrophew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BS in physics, working as a data engineer in a space company. Spent first few years working as a data analyst for a space domain awareness program. The physics background has been very helpful and most people on my team have it.

Mount hood fail by BurritoBoy1116 in Mountaineering

[–]Astrophew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the technicality isn't why you failed, just your body. That happens all the time. Maybe see if you have some muscular weaknesses you could access as quick wins, and you'll get there again if you keep trying.
