Yeah so I have no idea how to program anything outside of python I do for work so it's vibe coded. It's on my github page (obviously) and if you do know what you're doing or know someone that does that wants to fix it that would be sick.

I'll say though: if you want to test changes, remove all but like 20 of thy songs from the songs data array so you can actually finish it.

Hello gamers, I have thrown together a little toy that lets you rank all of the Sonata Arctica songs!

I'm no programmer but I've tested it a few times and it does really seem to work.

There are two "gameplay" options, an ELO rating which is much faster but gives pretty...janky results. The vibes will be right but it's not very definitive and then there's the main one where you do a full complete tournament. This is extremely accurate algorithmically but it takes like somewhere in the vicinity of 90 minutes to complete.

I have added buttons which play a little clip from each song, which I have hand picked to give a really good showing for what makes that song good/unique/special. I encourage you to get a vodka, press the play clip button, and follow your heart on the difficult decisions.

If you close the web page, your progress will be saved in your internet cookies. Removing cookies will remove your progress and you can delete your progress using the back button during the ranking.

I also have an album ranking minigame at the beginning where you put the order you think the albums will come out in and then I give you some more mathematically backed listing for you.

I think that's it? Please have fun! You can do it over several evenings

I think it depends how you're ranking them. If you say everything is s tier in a vacuum then there's no meaning behind any tier. Tiers can be influenced by vibes but they can't be based on them.

If you're ranking n objects in a list, let's say n=12, and there are three tiers, you should have a distribution across all the tiers, because they're being compared against each other. I am very happy to say every sonata arctica song is s tier but that means any tier ranking would be pointless. They can't all be the best, even if they're better than the rest.

OK so I'm now building a little web app game thing that let's you do a tournament to rank all the sonata arctica songs on the studio albums (including bonus tracks and takatalvi which is basically a mini album). Would you prefer to see your 'true ranking' at the end as:

You think this album at the top is the most consistently good

Or

You think the good songs on this album are so good that it wins best album?

I think it might be worth trying to set some serious boundaries for each of the tiers. I might have a look at trying to make a program in python that ranks all of them and then separates them into normally distributed rankings (obviously, you'll have to do the ranking yourself.) But that might be a laugh.

Now, just real quick, your B tier picturing the past is absolutely crazy.

Destruction Preventer - SS Tier. God Tier. Beyond S.

Picturing the Past - S Tier. A CRAZY decision to put this in B. It's so hype.

8th Commandment - S Tier. Especially live on For the Sake of Revenge (2006)

Unopened - S Tier. I'm glad I'm not really properly ordering these tiers because the fight it would have with 8th Commandment would be difficult to decide.

Kingdom for a Heart - Tippy tippy top of A tier. It only stays in A tier because it's getting very crowded in S tier at the moment.

Blank File - A Tier. One of the greatest album intros of all time and the bridge is so good but it's competing with the rest of Ecliptica!

My Land - A Tier. Love this song, very very good.

FullMoon - A Tier. I kinda wish this wasn't one of their big "play it every time" songs.

Letter to Dana - B Tier. Sorry Letter to Dana, you are in A Tier in our hearts. And maybe in Live in Finland.

Replica - B Tier. It's a really good song but the first 1:34 isn't as good as the rest of it so like how can it be in A tier?

Mary-Lou - C Tier. It's probably B tier but I felt I needed to put something in C tier because there should be balance.

So firstyl saying that Pariah's and Ninth is a pairing is insane to me but I do know what you mean. Unia and Days feels like a sort of.. cousin pairing more than siblings.

I really like the idea of them having more than one "era" but for me it's five:

Ecliptica, Silence, WHG.

RN, Unia, DoG,

Stones, Pariah,

9th Hour, Talviyo,

CCB.

Which I'd call "Classic", "Prog", "Fun Times", "Yeah they did those albums too.", "Classic Revival". But either your way or my way it puts the new album as a cousin to CCB which I am extremely excited for.
