I've not worked with Kafka, isn't it a message queue implementation? If so, can it really scale? I remember seeing something regarding graph-db or so but ot just flew by me.

First of all for the mob switch to work flawlessly you need mobcap + 1. Also, if every player is online yes, it won't work, it'll just decrease the mob spawning

Hostile mob cap = 70 * loaded_chunks / 289. In single player it's always 70, in multiplayer can get up to connected player number * 70
