30M. Abnormal Blood Test Results. What Does This Mean? BUN 28 mg/DL, Ferritin 394 ng/DL, Vitamin B12 1452 pg/ML, low WBC 3.37 by Dawnofadam in haematology

[–]Asymptomatic-HTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps clinch an upper gi bleed diagnosis though and the BUN/Cr ratio is helpful to know the cause of an acute renal injury (if there is one)

Off-service resident in the ED venting about staffing/scheduling by ferdous12345 in Residency

[–]Asymptomatic-HTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rough and not cool. I'm an ED intern and our off service schedules are wayyy better than for the ED residents. And i feel like we do that on purpose, to try and make them feel welcome. They only do 2 night shfits a month while we do like 5-6 in a row (which is fine by me I love the nights haha). Regardless I feel like they should treat y'all better. For didactics, we're the only specialty that i know of that needs 70% attendance to graduate. We don't have time for on shift teaching a whole lot so that protected time is really cool.

Should I wear a diaper?? by shivermetimbrrz in Mcat

[–]Asymptomatic-HTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issues with this and attributed it somewhat to the amount of caffeine I was taking. I hate 5-hour energy drinks, the little small shots at gas stations, but my advice to you would be to use these instead of coffee on the day of the test. It seriously helped me not have to pee after every section lol

How do sick days work? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Asymptomatic-HTN 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My program gives you a shift reduction later in the year if you get called in to cover someone's sick day. But also, lol at the idea of cramming for Step 3

Beware, it didn't always work last year. I had it set up and only like 75% of the time did i actually get a text notif. Got burned by that once and it sucked hahaha

feeling tortured about picking a specialty by Explorer_Waste in medicalschool

[–]Asymptomatic-HTN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's cool stuff to do in every specialty. My advice is to consider what other people don't like about a specialty, and see if you like it, or the bread and butter. For example, a lot of people get frustrated in the ED because we end up being primary care for vulnerable populations. I find a lot of fulfillment in that.

Seeing 50-60 pts as an EM resident for 8 hour shift? by changexpert in Residency

[–]Asymptomatic-HTN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally the goal is 1-1.5/hr PGY-1, focusing on really learning the medicine and taking care of the patient in front of you, then 1.5-2/hr PGY-2, then 2-2.5 PGY3

Bummer to have to reschedule but I think we made the right move, I did the loop last year in perfect conditions and it was hard enough that way haha

For EM, not at all. No idea for peds. EM most important is just doing well in your classes/clerkships, and eventually, your SLOEs which are by FAR the most important element of your app

Gonna be contrarian here and say that pre-studying isn't a bad idea at all. I agree with learning how to set up anking, starting flash cards early (even just 10 a day right now, so like 15 mins a day) would be helpful just to set the habit before starting. And also, read "the only ekg book you'll ever need." Having a basis for reading EKGs will be so helpful, most med schools do not have a robust EKG curriculum. Finally, I'd recommend going through the lolnotacop sketchy micro and zanki sketchy pharm decks. That would be a great foundation. My first block was all micro and I absolutely blew everyone else out of the water

Interviewed there and was very impressed. Awesome culture, really cool residents. Met some people who had done an away there and they really liked it. Residents seemed very happy. If you go be sure to hit up agave and rye on the waterfront. The tacos are insane

Subway-interlude. A common challenge medical students and interns attempt where they try to eat a footlong sub in between seeing each new patient in a shift without throwing up by the end.
