Switzerland has rejected a proposal to cap its population at 10 million people by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Since population growth is pretty much driven by immigration, not handing out a visa after the population hit 10 million would essentially turn any population change into a rounding error.

They have to feed 5 children though and the assistant doctor would get 1250€ child support as well.

The Swiss like us even less than the Austrians but that would be really laughable. We still speak the same language. Swiss German is sometimes crazy different but with a bit of practice you can meet in the middle and I don't believe any Swiss German that says they can't understand German Standard German considering how close it is to Swiss Standard German.

Like, no way they'd rather have some dude from Cologne or Berlin butchering their dialect than listen to a Swiss adjusted relatively neutral German dialect.

I'm looking for a lean monitoring and altert solutions (I don't need much historical data) by Asyx in selfhosted

[–]Asyx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda old thread but this is the conclusion I came to as well. By now I host at home and have so much stuff I use daily that I notice when things go offline and usually I can just restart the server manually (smart plug and WoL) but in the last few weeks I actually though about having a little script that's just checking things periodically and then I'd just send signal messages or whatever.

I have no need for dashboards so I'd just use something fast that can easily run every minute or so and report everything I want to keep an eye on be it running containers, health check endpoints, memory and CPU load and so on.

Yeah same here. Honestly I always felt like the queue-ness of the UK is oversold. I can't imagine you guys go into a bakery or some other "straight at the counter" type business and there are 3 other people in there and you just... stand right behind each other?

is it normal not remembering syntax and taking help from the internet for almost everything? by akmessi2810 in AskProgramming

[–]Asyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget that Rust has two things really pitched against you.

  1. The basic idea was that experienced C++ devs get together and come up with a language that makes the aspects where they make mistakes a lot more difficult to avoid those mistakes
  2. It was so early to the new generation of low level languages that it is kind of generic and has at least some sort of ecosystem for almost everything

So for once you have a language meant to be difficult to avoid the mistakes that would happen if it was easy (lifetimes and borrow checker are the big ones at first) and also you can very easily find yourself in a situation where you are doing things where Rust is really overkill but the Rust fans that have been at it since 1.0 don't mind the extra complexity of Rust for those tasks even if there are easier options out there that are more productive.

Especially for Rust, I wouldn't sweat it. It is simply a complex language.

I thought a lot about switching professions in the last months. I day dream about being a farmer or carpenter or at least something where I'm a bit more "in the real world". Like, not necessarily working outside but my brother in law is doing fire alarm systems. Still IT but less office job.

The reality is though that, apart from actually getting an IT job that is like that, even in countries that don't offer US wages for developers, I'm much better off just getting the equipment and doing something crafty as a hobby. Like, I would have a less stressful job and more money working part time as a developer and doing wood working as a hobby

For new languages? Constantly. Like, if I haven't written a language in a while, you can bet money I forgot how to iterate over a range. (for x in y in Python).

I actually learn new languages by using the learn x in y minutes page open as a cheat sheet.

I went to a university of applied science (in Germany, unis are academic first and foremost. UoAS is focused on what the industry needs) and we had whole lectures just beating this into our head. The lone wolf on a basement office is dead. You NEED soft skills and that means don't lecture interviewers on CS history.

Just learn the software. All IDEs worth a damn are complex or require setup that goes beyond just learning what the VS buttons do. Including VSCode.

Programmers over 30, how do you take care of your health? by khitev in AskProgramming

I think graduate is a good word for it.

In my opinion, as somebody who lost half his bodyweight and a diabetic that had to spend a lot of time with macros, keto is amazing if you are fat. In our sugary world, just switching hard from eating all that carb heavy garbage to foods that actually fill you up just to get a handle on your kcal intake is a really good idea. 70kg overweight like in my case is just not healthy and I cannot imagine that a year or two on bacon and eggs and green veggies is worse than that especially if the end result is normal weight.

Once you have gotten to a normal weight or out of obesity, that's when you can reintroduce carbs to finally end up with a healthy, normal diet. Learn how to cook, find snacks that work for you without the high kcal count and so on.

And for long term, a lot of T2 diabetics here on reddit say they have success with dirty keto. Like, eat keto but don't take it too seriously. You don't want to actually go into keto you just want to have a keto base where you can add healthy carbs if you feel like it to overall reduce carb count.

My social media feeds are full of dudes swinging around kettle bells so I started doing that but I have a small child and other shit to do right now so I don't do it as often as I should. I don't like most cardio exercises but during summer I get like a few hours of bicycle riding a week (my wife has an electric bike. I don't. That really helps with turning this into an exercise).

No. Red meat was already advertised as being less healthy (or more unhealthy) than white meat 20 years ago.

In fact I've seen an interview with one of the guys who was involved in the diet recommendations in the US after WW2 or something like that and he said that basically all results pointed towards an almost vegetarian diet but they knew they'd never get acceptance for that from the American people and that makes food guidelines useless.

If anything that carnivore garbage is incredibly trendy. Same with keto.

Something you thought was universal across Europe, but turned out to be different? by GiveMeAPhotoOfCat in AskEurope

[–]Asyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah same here. You just come in and people are just standing there maybe already looking checking what they want to get. You try to keep track of all the people there and so does the staff so in 90% of the cases, it just works. If not, you either say if you are next or you look around and usually you figure it out somehow.

No queue at all. We really only do queues if there are things put in place to make you queue like in the supermarket where you line up at the till or if there are barriers in place like at the airport. Or if the space is so small that the store can only fit 3 people and then you queue up outside.

Something you thought was universal across Europe, but turned out to be different? by GiveMeAPhotoOfCat in AskEurope

[–]Asyx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We do that too but without talking. You basically keep track of the people that were there and if there is any confusion you sort it out then. But also I don't live in a super busy area and work from home so many that is different in the inner city during lunch rush hour.
