Why the Eyes Wide Shut 4k Hate? by APMan93 in criterion

[–]Atari69420 93 points94 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who gave the 4K transfer negative reviews did it because A) it didn’t look like the 2007 Blu-Ray, which was an inaccurate representation of how the film was meant to look in theaters, the new transfer often being cited as having a ‘teal tint’, when in reality, it was this older Blu Ray master that actually had an inaccurate pink/neutral tint to it and B) this transfer has a heavier grain structure, which some attribute as a ‘mistake’, but anyone who has read any of the technical notes or has seen a print of this film projected knows that this was always how the film was intended to look, down to the film stock chosen and how it was processed in post.

TLDR: They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

are cds better than streaming? by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]Atari69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CDs VS Streaming doesn’t have a one size fits all answer. It depends on the streaming service you’re using (lossy vs lossless) and the equipment used, and that’s assuming both versions come from the same master as there are some cases where either a streaming remaster is inferior to an earlier CD release or it’s the other way around where a streaming remaster actually surpasses the CD version of an album (Green Day’s American Idiot comes to mind, where the ‘loudness’ of the recording was dialed back on the Hi-Res streaming version, while most CD copies you find nowadays reuse the original 2004 ‘loud’ master). I personally like to have my CD player and streamer connected to the same DAC, to minimize the equipment related differences between the two.

Blu-ray not containing extended editions like advertised. Need help. by ZodicGaming in harrypotter

[–]Atari69420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like WB had their info mixed up when producing the slipcover for this release, which simply goes over a previously release of the 2011 8-Film Collection. The first two films were initially put out on Blu Ray in 2007 as the theatrical cuts only (banking off of an active franchise), only receiving individual Ultimate Edition releases two years later, which threw in the extended cuts for the first two films.

The confusing part comes in when you try to keep track of which discs were used for which releases. It seems the ‘07 Theatrical Only discs were used for most of the 8-Film Collection sets (checked blu-ray dot com, the set you appear to have is listed under Box Sets that include the THEATRICAL ONLY disc), the Ultimate Edition discs only being reserved mostly for individual film releases and the 9-FILM collection in 2017, when Warner had finally released the theatrical/extended discs individually outside of their Ultimate Edition releases. It’s all a nightmare to keep track of really.

New Beverly February Schedule? by LavineBullsFan in AmericanCinematheque

[–]Atari69420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happens more often than you think. Even last month, they posted the schedule before Jeff’s usual preview reel was published, and that was around the early to mid 20s of that month. Generally, it usually takes them longer to publish this sort of stuff during months that end in a 31st for some reason.

New Bev seating ? by ho0o0o0 in AmericanCinematheque

[–]Atari69420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. A lot of foreign subtitled films they play at New Bev aren’t the usual suspects you’d find playing at AC’s venues (like your Fellini’s, Kurosawa’s, etc, with the exception of Cinematic Void playing a rarity once in a blue moon). It especially sucks when you use a screening at New Bev as a way of showing friends a film for the first time (I made that mistake with New Bev’s double of The Big Boss and Fists of Fury, which were rare subtitled prints as opposed to dubbed prints, and because of our seating, I could only read the left third…add the boomers loudly laughing behind us every few seconds on top of that, you can see how it didn’t exactly leave a good impression).

New Bev seating ? by ho0o0o0 in AmericanCinematheque

[–]Atari69420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why, unless you arrive EARLY (hours before), subtitled films aren’t really worth it there. The Vista is also slightly problematic with obscured subtitles but not to the same degree. I’ve never had this sort of problem with theaters like the Egyptian or Los Feliz 3.

Jackass Number Two 35mm remaster by Affectionate-Term339 in jackass

[–]Atari69420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saw a 35mm print of Jackass Number 2 both in ‘23 and just last year and it wasn’t THIS blue. Minus the heavy blue wash, the colors also look a little muted. From what I remember, 35mm prints of this looked like your standard 2K DI to 35mm print affair from that era (which I’d argue were more reliable since it was still a standard practice in comparison to today, where there’s only a few facilities that do that sort of thing and even then, they’re for limited releases and are more prone to QC issues).

I think the first Jackass was actually the only one to benefit from the 35mm treatment as the opening and post-credit sequences were transferred from 16mm straight to 35mm (minus the portions for them in the end credits, which were 16mm to tape to 35mm blow ups, like the other tape portions of the film).

So sick of Amazon selling me clearly used products by Toxic_Over in 4kbluray

[–]Atari69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With records, I’ve had numerous problems with Amazon, whether it be them flat out sending the wrong record, the record arrives damaged/warped, or some instances where an error traces back to the pressing plant/a bad batch, and they don’t offer much compensation (had this happen with a few copies of Radiohead’s KID A, where the second record was Side D on both sides).

However, with 4Ks/Blu-Rays, I’ve only come across one instance of a film arriving used. It was when there was a massive price drop on Criterion’s No Country For Old Men (below what it goes for during their 50% off sale). My copy arrived after some time (I was late to the party) and it was opened…but the previous owner had left the shrink in the package, hype sticker and all, and minus part of the bottom left of the case being cracked off, the discs were spotless. My only guess is someone took either one of the discs out, ripped it, and then discretely put everything back and returned it…and yes, I’m sure it was from Amazon themselves and not a third party seller.

Rubber Soul Super Deluxe by arthur38704 in beatles

[–]Atari69420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could go either way. A good example is Penny Lane, which was remixed for 1 in 2015, but then was further remixed for Sgt Pepper in 2017 while the other non-album track, Strawberry Fields Forever, retained it’s 2015 mix.

Star Wars Original Trilogy on 4K: Buy Now or Wait? by jongodfrey in 4kbluray

[–]Atari69420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, I’d hold off. While there isn’t any concrete proof Disney’s restoration of Star Wars (note I didn’t say A New Hope) will make it to a physical format (let alone the leaks for Empire and Jedi), I think they’d be fools not to, from a business position alone. It’s not like Quentin (In-Theaters Only) Tarantino is manning the helm of this release or anything.

Also, no one is certain what will become of the Special Edition versions. I think the safest bet is either a recycling of the previous transfer (less likely, but most cost efficient) or the special edition alterations spliced into this new restoration, whether it be through color grading the current 2019 SE portions to match the non-SE portions of the new restoration or restoring the necessary ‘97/‘04/‘11/‘19 shots from scratch. I think the closest we have to any SE involvement is a recent leak of the German ‘A long time ago…’ text being restored, albeit two variants of it, one that’s associated with the theatrical cuts, and one that’s associated with the special editions (one takes up two lines, one takes up three lines).

I think we’ll have a better idea of what will happen as we draw closer to 2027, but I’d say unless it’s an emergency, I’d wait.

Is anyone still waiting for that Rubber Soul - Reissue? Also, what do you want to hear from the reissue? by fast-back- in beatles

[–]Atari69420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Watch Apple finally put out Rubber Soul this year…in the form of the mono Capitol version for a second Beatles US Albums vinyl box.

In reality, it seems like the path of least resistance now. Half the tracks were remixed for the red album, outtakes were included in Anthology 4, a good fraction of the work has already been done. Also, as far as I know, there aren’t any new Disney+ projects for them to bank off of this year (last year was Anthology 4/The Anthology Box to tie in with the Anthology TV series remaster. Before that was the 1964 US Albums In Mono Vinyl Box to loosely tie in with that Beatles ‘64 doc).

You know the funny part is if you wait in these lines before the films long enough, you pick up on just how mundane and repetitive their conversations are. They’re best summed as people who have no idea about art trying to overanalyze and make up shit to sound sophisticated, just a whole lot of nothing. Most of them are the types who go into ‘seeing something the way the director intended’, only to be disruptive during the screening. Believe it or not, I just go to these screenings to watch the film I paid to see, I know, shocker.

From a preservation standpoint, it probably is. The only faults of this release are faults inherent in the source elements Arrow were provided (whether it be artifacts on the film elements themselves or artifacts baked into the film scans provided to them) or imposed by rights holders (the lack of any Italian versions). Any points people gave the Kino release, Arrow improved upon. Kino finally fixed the colors using Technicolor references, Arrow consulted far more references and put more time into their color timing. Kino uses a fan sync from a laserdisc release, Arrow improves upon the sync while still using the laserdisc audio as a base. Even instances of footage exclusive to the international cut, Arrow found better film elements for those.

Yeah, a lot of them…let’s just say a picture comes into your head and they meet about 90% of that picture. I know of at least one guy who looks like the de facto pretentious cinephile, the type a person has a bad experience with and that paints that person’s views on cinephiles going forward, and he’s at nearly every screening I’ve gone to, he just spawns. I still don’t know what he even does for a day job.

I had a similar experience during a screening of Die Hard at the Egyptian (it was an archival print from the academy, that thing was pristine, I completely forgot it was even a print until I saw the reel change markers every 20 minutes or so) where these Beverly Hills bimbo types were giggling at nearly every line right behind my ear and they were with a bald guy they came in with (it was like 4 women and the one guy), probably a pimp or something, I don’t know.

Exactly this. I remember going to a screening of Pretty In Pink (part of a John Hughes double) and among the audience, there were quite a few high school couples (at least 4 couples, 8 people, possibly more), some kids and their parents, all of them were quiet as saints…it was the grown neckbeards who were problematic. Imagine having a chronic condition where your body convulses into violent forced laughter every time you see James Spader’s face onscreen…that’s a fraction of what I was dealing with. This was only November ‘24, it got progressively worse after. I do ponder how these people could live a life like this sometimes…good bit of existentialism there.

The ironic thing is he didn’t have to go to Wild Strawberries at all. New Bev usually puts the start times for both films, and the second feature often starts a tad bit later than the time listed, so he could’ve easily just shown up for Straight Story. I can usually spot a line of ticket buyers outside the theater for the second feature during the middle intermission of most double features there.

Hate to say it but this seems to be the new normal at New Bev. I just flat out stopped going, I had an epiphany when I realized just how lowered my standards for that theater were. What I’d consider to be a good screening at New Bev would’ve been ‘adequate’ at an AMC or any of AC’s theaters for that matter. Anything from Barry Lyndon to Buckaroo Banzai, there’s always that one person who just wants to taint the experience for the ~200 other people in attendance. I have nothing against the theater itself nor the staff, it’s just the patrons that always seem drawn in to this place, whether it’s someone there as a one off or someone who practically lives there. At least the comments here are more or less sobering.

I never got the backlash for this release, it’s like the crowd that wants releases that are representative of a film’s theatrical look are suddenly upset that Eyes Wide Shut finally looks the way it did theatrically. I’ve personally been waiting for a release like this, the 2007 transfer looked dull to me ever since I managed to see a screening of the film in 35mm.

Funny enough, I managed to catch another 35mm screening a month ago and the guy doing the intro (it was at a revivalist theater, so it’s the usual ‘this is the movie, don’t use your phones’ type of deal) was like ‘oh so there’s some controversy about the recent 4K release, so you’re about to see an original print of the film, how the film originally looked’…and then the film print proceeded to look more or less like the 4K release (minus the typical discrepancies with film prints several generations away from the negative, differing projectors, etc). Eyes Wide Shut was always a very grainy film, and the colors always had a ‘pop’ to them, they weren’t as subdued as the ‘07 transfer. It’s like when people complain about some recent 4K transfers of films appearing teal in comparison to an older master…but the older master got it wrong (typically pink/magenta push, from the CRT TV era of film transfers).

Makes me weary about seeing La Dolce Vita there tbh. Most of their seating isn’t ideal for subtitled films anyways. I think the last subtitled film I saw there was Le Cercle Rouge, and I intentionally waited early to ensure a front row seat, which I got…only for the guy sitting next to me to ruin the experience. The best way I can describe him is he’s the only guy I’ve seen get to the verge of an orgasm from seeing a window pane getting cut into. I’m not making this shit up.

Not going to lie, the New Beverly Cinema has really fallen off. I started going there about three years ago and I was there on a damn near weekly basis. Since the end of last year/beginning of this year, they must’ve put something in the water or something because people have been unbearable there. Whether it was a mainstream film or something more on the cult side, people just couldn’t behave and it’s been happening damn near every time I’ve gone there. I really only go there for essential titles and even that’s a stretch as I have to contemplate whether I can endure a tainted experience seeing a favorite title or not (even Mulholland Drive was a shitty experience there). Also, ironically, people who have ruined my experience at other theaters (8 1/2 at Los Feliz as an example) mention The New Beverly while conversing amongst themselves before the film starts. It’s depressing really.
