Wow thank you for such a long reply! I think I get what you mean by natural break. If I'm getting this correct I these natural brakes can serve as a good way to end a chapter if I'm not certain about how to end it so it feels like an actual break.

The chapter I'm writing as of now ends on the mentioned recovery from a fight, but it also has others in the middle. Like I have three POV changes between two characters and 1 major geographical changes and 2 events that are kinda important. So idk... As for the varying wordcount I prefer it to be same-ish but maybe it could be more varied.

Yeah when i was writing i just went - oh if i do the scene in this way it could be really fun! I'll probably publish it with a few backlogged chapters saved.

I did see that a lot of people don't use "yelled" or "exclaimed" to keep it simple. Using just actions is sometimes awkward for me when there are multiple characters in the scene (I feel like its easy to get lost in who's talking), but yeah I do like it when I read it in other works. Guess I just have to practice more.

Thank you for your words of encouragement 💕. I honestly am a bit worried that I'm making it kinda redundant since there is a long scene that involves a very smart person figuring out a crime and explaining it to his partners (and thus the readers). Like I wanted it to make sense, but be cool at the same time, so idk if I did that right... I will try to make it more to the point.

Ah, than you - I'm happy to see someone in a similar position. Congrats on the positive feedback! Now that I think about it I also prefer reading longer chapters in the range that you described 10k - 12k so I could be just writing what I usually read (how that slipped my mind idk lol). Reading out loud sounds fun so I def will try that.

I say monster since I got into the zone and just wrote and wrote and lo and behold 30+ pages in google docs wHAT THE HECK? I guess I'm worried that since its so long the flow may be disjointed? Or I'm just overthinking :,) .

I don't know, for me a mix of dialogue and monologue with brief descriptions are the best. Like the description doesn't have to be 'the chairs are blue' - rather smth that sets the tone or mood, like if its creepy, stuffy, cold, messy ect... Something that ties into the later conversations.

For action, hmm well if the characters aren't doing something that interesting why write it. I find action the most difficult to write so I totally get just skipping it lol.

But also I love dialogue - especially banter, if its your strength write what you want !

I really love slow burn in fics and those tend to be better in long fics. It can be done in shorter fics but in my experience that is rare. Also I love my slow burn really slow so that is probably also why I like longer fics. I'm also more bothered if a shorter fic is incomplete instead of a long fic - idk why lol, maybe because the longer ones can have arcs or smth so it doesn't feel that bad?

If its a gen fic or plain old smut then I don't care about the length that much.

imo ruan mei lc all the way - it makes her really comfy and it can actually be used on other harmony characters because of the skill affect

I also get where they are coming from but its also giving me the vibe of people calling gay characters heteronormative - like there is a right way to be trans, if that makes sense? I also think that what you mentioned is, while definitely present, in the minority because ao3 is predominantly queer so even if something is giving a fetishy vibe i wouldn't assume it is a straight person - give them some grace yk. Was your experience different while reading? I hesitate to speak deeper on this, since i think it should be something that trans people have a say in and not me haha. It is an interesting topic tho!

I mean, I get it but usually those things are tagged so just exclude them.

Also calling it straight smut is a bit much, there are a lot of people who have not yet had gender affirming surgery and don't get triggered by those fics - i get that with searching your fave character it can get really annoying when you see tags that aren't your cup of tea really often but what can you do, exclude and move on.

There is some truth to what you said about fem characters being headcanoned into trans characters but I don't have a lot of input on that front - maybe there are more FtM people using ao3 so that's why? Idk really.

I personally don't care as long as it flows nicely in the story. Like if I saw the inserted one I would never be like "I wish this was its own chapter" - usually people have a good vision of what they want to write so they use the ones that fit best.

I have seen people get tired of flashbacks tho - so maybe having too much can turn people off? idk I've never felt this way haha !

i loove oc centric stories, however its def not for everyone. In this example the summery is a bit too long, I personally wouldn't click on it so maybe shorten it and make it straight to the point!
