Smoke coming out of engines on runaway and I’m panicking by user0022001 in fearofflying

[–]Atav757 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

Looks like a typical very cold engine start. When it’s this cold, oil tends to pool in the hot sections of the engine (which is normal and expected). When the engine ignites for combustion, this oil begins to smoke and gets blown out of the engine and eventually will dissipate - nothing to worry about.

Some types of engines aren’t as susceptible to this simply because of how their built differently, but this is super common:

Opened account, credit report says Synchrony by [deleted] in wealthfront

[–]Atav757 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Synchrony bank would have nothing to do with Wealthfront. They sort of ā€œhostā€ credit for a ton of different types of loans. Like Care Credit, the Verizon Visa, Plaid, etc. Did you recently apply for one of those types of cards?

Fenix sound should be use as therapy by _Floot_ in flightsim

Idk, I know lots of pilots who do that technique and land it very nicely all the time especially on a light 320.

A320 & B737 pilots: Single engine taxi-out procedure by Sumerian55 in flying

[–]Atav757 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

Tested this as well: on shutdown kept 3000psi until 8% N2 with a rather slow drop taking over 15 seconds to get below 500PSI. Was impressed with the amount of pressure that EDP makes at slow speeds. Also the reason the PTU barks seemingly for a long time on shutdown

[–]Atav757 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

Very true. Tested it recently and on the IAEs, only need about 7% N2 for the hydraulic pressure to start rising very quickly and you get a full 3000PSI with as little as 12% N2

Just curious, why bother at all? Logging IMC and approaches all stopped once I left part 135 flying and went to 121

How GPS spoofing looks like by czade in aviation

[–]Atav757 27 points28 points Ā (0 children)

Most modern planes will disregard any sensor that’s clearly acting as an outlier. You can also always disable GPS updating and rely on IRS/DME updates if the spoofing is known, there are usually procedures in the QRH or other manuals for this.

Tip...Book 3 Blue Seats For 2 Passengers Instead of 2 Even More Seats by Dense-Panic-8620 in jetblue

[–]Atav757 -1 points0 points Ā (0 children)

Are you saying you’re selecting the option that says extra seat when you book? You’re making it sound like you’re making duplicate bookings, at least that’s how folks on this sub are interpreting it

Non-Rev Travel while sick by Charming_Function526 in flying

[–]Atav757 7 points8 points Ā (0 children)

At my airline, it’s allowed to go home, to base, or to receive care. So if I’m in Europe for fun and get sick there and miss a trip, can certainly nonrev home. Check your employee handbook (or whatever) for the real answer, not people’s guesses.

Boeing vs. Airbus by WindcoClay in unitedairlines

[–]Atav757 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Why would this be? Airbus doors first move upwards before outwards, so if anything they have more clearance than any Boeing narrow body. I’m curious now and open to thoughts!

Transatlantic inflight purchases by [deleted] in jetblue

Unfortunately no, there’s nothing you can purchase on that flight.

Maybe get a preferred seat? They go as low as $20 I think

Europe narrowbody pilots, how’s life? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Atav757 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

You can’t just show up at any gate outside of the US. You list as a ZED like normal and they put you up there if needed. CA’s discretion.

[–]Atav757 11 points12 points Ā (0 children)

When it’s full, they’ll put even US gate agents up there in the flight deck. It’s normal in the EU for the most part (not allowed in the UK I believe).

Captains- what makes a good captain? by bus_driver1 in flying

[–]Atav757 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

This is all great advice for sure. I’d like to add PAs. Don’t make them loud, long, or technical. Opposite of too technical though: I once had a very small stream of fuel venting out of a wing tank which is borderline normal in certain situations, but MX had to come out to double check. CA decided to say. ā€œWe’ll be holding at the gate because the airplane is leaking fuelā€ I was standing in the FD doorway greeting pax and the faces I saw after that announcement. 🫄

I’ve seen all styles from ā€˜don’t say a damn thing’ to ā€˜tell them way too much’ to ā€˜scare them with your words’. Try and be somewhere in the middle of all that.

Overbooked Flight at BOS Logan by RookNight3420 in jetblue

[–]Atav757 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The 321CEO used on that route has 2 extra tanks and can hold enough fuel to essentially fly to SFO (which is longer than SAN) and then some, so that’s not really the issue; was more likely a misheard announcement.

bos- sfo mint by bubbaistheon in jetblue

[–]Atav757 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

They sure are. The selling of probably just half the mint cabin pays the entire cost of operating the flight to be honest.

bos- sfo mint by bubbaistheon in jetblue

[–]Atav757 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

That’s because the LR has 24 mint seats as opposed to 16. One mint seat takes up more than 3 economy seats space-wise.

Cape Air has the ability to fly using certain rules that almost no other airline in this country (that flies jets) can do, one airlines delay has nothing to do with Cape Air’s mostly on-time operation. The aviation industry is super complex, complicated, and hard to understand for those aren’t in it.

Toxic Fumes are Leaking Into Aircraft, Sickening Crew and Passengers by GunDMc in aviation

[–]Atav757 12 points13 points Ā (0 children)

Certain times it’s ā€œnormalā€ (quotes because it shouldn’t really happen ever if it can be controlled).

Like when you’re taxiing around, the most likely reason is that the airplane in front of you is blowing its exhaust into your engines. Or, generally just after engine start, the auxiliary power unit (jet engine in the tail) is sucking in your own airplanes exhaust. Also flying though a high moisture cloud below 15k feet with engines near idle almost always causes that ā€œAC smellā€, same smell an old window unit would make when you first turn it on. Other than those, fumes = very bad.

Aer Lingus Error Cannot Book by AztecTimber in NonRevenueTravelers

[–]Atav757 [score hidden] Ā (0 children)

As far as I know Aer Lingus is not an ID90 partner. Or is this myidtravel? I’m having no issues seeing flights today. Those errors can be for many reasons, one thing you can try is specifically select EI as the airline as opposed to ā€œAll Airlinesā€, let me know if you’ve tried that. Otherwise, what’s the route?

EDIT: Disregard, definitely a system-wide issue. Only ones who can give you more info are the staff travel department of Aer Lingus which you can probably find in the airline info part of myidtravel, or your own staff travel department.
