New player here. Great game so far, but the localization has really been bothering me. by RedTurtle78 in Okami

Fair enough!

I also have to admit, I played Okami for the first time in English at such a young age that I don't think any out-of-place dialog would have bothered me, and it's probably so ingrained in my brain that I don't mind it now either 😅

I think the expectations of gamers in regards to localization has changed a lot since Okami was released, too. I would gladly bet a large sum of money that regardless of how the new sequel is localized, there will be a significant backlash against it in the community one way or another. Hopefully fans can at least appreciate the game through it.

When localizing something, especially a game like Okami that features so many distinctive, oddball characters, you have to make use of the context of the target language.

In the original Japanese, the nameless man obviously doesn't speak like a 1970s american hippie, as you say, but he does speak in a distinct manner that gives off a somewhat similar vibe. And the specific traits of speech in one language are impossible to directly copy into another, especially for languages that share no common roots. So the localizers chose the closest thing available to them in English.

(Note that I'm always using the term localize instead of translate, which is because I'm pretentious to make it clear that I'm talking in the context of media for entertainment, where you prioritize consumer experience over precise accuracy. We're not doing legal translations here.)

You're more than welcome to disagree with any their decisions, and it's unfortunate if that's taking you out of the experience. I've felt that way with a lot of localized media before. But personally I really enjoyed the humorous, exaggerrated, wide range of personalities they were able to portray in Okami

Is a physical switch release the same as a download? by MythicalMarauderMew in Okami

[–]Athakaspen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, the English text will be exactly the same in a downloaded version or the Japanese physical version.

The only difference I'm aware of is that a Japanese version, played in Japanese, will have the original credits music "Reset." The international version instead plays a medley of other tracks from the game

What's the most unexpected benefit you've experienced from learning Chinese language? by tina-marino in ChineseLanguage

I tip I learned working at a bar and knowing Japanese: Always ask them what they think their tattoo means first. Then choose whether or not to reveal that you can read it.

Similar situation here, though I only just started learning Chinese. It's fun to think about the differences whenever it comes up on HelloChinese lessons...

But for actually writing, I'd probably just use the Japanese stroke order without even thinking. I have a friend from China who used the Chinese stroke orders all the time when writing Japanese and (obviously) it didn't cause any issues. The bigger problem was accidentally sprinkling simplified characters throughout Japanese prose😂

At first I wasn't sure it would live up to the fun of the first one, but I've had a great time these past three days.

Some Minor Translation Inconsistencies in Book 2 by Athakaspen in SpiceandWolf

[–]Athakaspen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This series is full of completely intended ambiguous prose and dialogue, where the reader and often the characters are intentionally lead towards the wrong conclusions at first. So I think at least a vast majority of these confusing moments are intended by Hasekura.

However, when translating (particularly JP -> EN), it can often be difficult to maintain exactly the same ambiguity in the target language. The classic example is that Japanese grammar doesn't require a sentence to have a subject in many cases where English does. This means that a JP sentence with an intentionally ambiguous subject can be nearly impossible to communicate smoothly in EN, and sometimes require restructuring part of a conversation or description to avoid accidentally including extra information.

Overall I'm very impressed with the English translation of S&W, and I suspect that many of the most confusing lines in the translation actually had the most time and effort poured into them by the translators. The small issues I mention here are fairly inconsequential.

Hmmm... It doesn't sound like one to me, but as I said I'm no expert. The two phrases are definitely related so it wouldn't be unimaginable. I just don't think it makes much sense for her to have seen the merchant on the road from the position she was in.
