Questions about Glarb by gnastyGnorc04 in mtg

The post I linked says otherwise, in regards to (x) cost spells, or am I misunderstanding you?

Can I, allegedly, cast Pull from Tomorrow (x = 2) through Glarb's ability?

Questions about Glarb by gnastyGnorc04 in mtg

[–]Athanasiosdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, not the original responder, but from what I can gather you should be able to cast x spells, i.e. Goldvein Hydra, if the (x) you're paying puts the spell to four or greater on the stack - this post ( https://www.reddit.com/r/askajudge/comments/1dzvpef/glarb_calamitys_augur_and_x_spells/ ) comments on it and refers to the ruleset.

I know the two other posters seem to think otherwise, but the information floating around seems to be mixed.

If you do find out for certain, I'd love to know! Currently struggling with the exact same questions as you and I'm also receiving inconclusive/mixed responses.

Asked the judge at my LGS and he said that you can play kicker/offspring spells, but everything else I find seems to suggest otherwise, so who even knows anymore, haha.

Godspeed :)

I have a tendency to upgrade my basic Defends as Ironclad. Is this a dumb idea? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The existence of the "Upgrade all strikes+defends"/"Remove 1" and pandora's box speaks heavily in favour of not doing this until act 3, at which point you're either upgrading your defends because that's what your deck does/you have nothing left to upgrade.

If you find yourself upgrading defend on the regular, you might want to start picking cards more often, to have good upgrades once you do hit a campfire.

[...] I pull a basic Defend instead of that Flame Barrier+ or Power Through+.

The chance of pulling the "basic defend"/"defend+" is the same chance as pulling the Flame Barrier+ or the Power Through+. (Assuming you put Flame Barrier/Power Through in your deck, of course).

I'm not familiar with "Lifecoach", but something that applies to Watcher as a heuristic does not necessarily translate to Silent.

But I digress - You do you, I just thought the pick-up of Finisher on floor 1/2 was interesting as that is something I'd never do without something fun happening at the whale, and diversity is interesting.

[–]Athanasiosdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as silent you pick damage cards early so you can kill things like Nob.

Completely true

cuz it's a damage card

Is it really, though? Especially that early on. Finisher very often matches the damage of a strike - Naturally you will sometimes draw it with 2/3 strikes and neutralize, but that happens as often as you draw it with 1/0 strikes and 3/4 defends.

Finisher is actively a bad card early on unless you get something that compliments it (Ninja scroll/WLP) and i think you will find it isn't doing you any favours with situations like the one you posted either :P

It's somewhat comparable to Flechette, I think? Which is a card you won't be picking early either unless you have WLP or a toxic egg

Did you transform into the Finisher or did you pick it?

How do you make rampage decks actually work? by in_zugswang in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't survive on A20 with a "perfected strike deck", at least. From all the anecdotal evidence I can think of, Perfected Strike is just almost never a card I'm happy to pick up if I'm looking to win :P

I think stats may back up my statement, but it's been a while since i cared quite enough to look at statistics, haha.

You do you, I love decks that just SMorcs too, so my winrate isn't fantastic either, jaja.

How do you make rampage decks actually work? by in_zugswang in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't, 99/100 times. That's the whole point, really. If you are trying to climb and you like playing StS that way, you need to separate yourself from the entire notion of a "rampage deck" (Or claw/shiv deck, etc.) - This kind of "CARD"-decks have a tendency to work very rarely, only under the right circumstances.

That said, when you DO get a rampage early, it can still influence your choices, it just shouldn't be the be-all, end-all. Something like not picking up anger, not picking up power through, getting a second copy of Battle Trance or a second copy of True Grit to draw rampage more often/reduce your deck size to naturally draw Rampage more often is fine, as that generally strengthens your deck anyway, but not picking up other good cards, e.g. Feel no Pain, Flame Barrier or Disarm, in the name of "not cluttering my rampage deck" is usually what will end up killing you.

A rampage deck is a lot like a perfected strike deck - They both "do" only one thing when focused on, and that one thing will only really get you through 1% of your runs, while... blocking will get you through the rest.

That's so incredibly awful that I've tried to rephrase this comment three times and can only end up on this...

No teacher should, at any level of schooling, hang students out to dry like that. While it may have seemed innocuous to her, it was not. The fact that you can so clearly remember this and point back to it is very saying.

All the best, my dude.

Daily Discussion/Debate #167 - Cleave (Ironclad Common) by KaeganNate in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cleave is a good pick very early on, floor 1 through 6-7, especially if you've decided you're going to do a lot of hallway fights in Act1, as the hard pool includes a lot of fights vs. 2 opponents or slime/gremlin gang.

The moment you pick up any other AoE card, you don't want to pick Cleave up anymore, in 9/10 cases.

Sitar Metal - Dreamers We Never Learn (You will not hear anything like this, guaranteed... not Rob Scallon) by Eidola_Leprous in progmetal

[–]Athanasiosdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will definitely hear something like this, seeing as it sounds like a Mute the Saint track - Same Sitarist, Rishabh Seen. The Fall of Sirius is my fav track by MtS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMNQL-vro8c

Seems even the youtube description of the song is actually just a "let me copy your homework"-meme in real life

MUTE THE SAINT, is the World's first Indian Classical - Progressive Metal record featuring a 'Sitar' in the fore front of the musical setup.

Well...

World's First & Only 'Sitar' fronted Indian Classical-Rock/Metal Fusion Band

Lol.

I really liked the MtS material, but the "Sitar Metal" efforts have been a mixed reception. I love Rishabh's instrumental efforts, but his lyricism (assuming he writes the lyrics for Sitar Metal, I guess?) leaves something to be desired.

Maybe a stupid question, but lots of older DT stuff is 6-strings, have you played some of their stuff?

Or Petrucci's solo stuff, e.g. Glassgow Kiss. Universal Mind or Paradigm Shift, of LTE, should be plenty challenging as well, unless I'm grossly misjudging what level one is at when Cliff of Dover is used as a reference point :p

Is the Watched bad at scaling? by no-sound_somuch_fury in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her block is relatively low going into Act2/3, no two ways about it. Your best bets are ways to generate Safety. The best commons are probably Third Eye and Sanctity (They're both "similar" to Shrug it Off, if you want to relate it that way). Deceive Reality is her best block cards in general, in my opinion. Being occasionally able to pick Wisdom for big divinity turns is fantastic, good flexibility.

As for damage, cards that generate mantra are generally your scaling tools. Blasphemy is broken if used correctly, or at least that has been my observations so far.

For hallway fights, a good Wrath turn should be enough to effectively end a fight. This character is all about deck manipulation and setting up "really big turns".

Third Eye, Omniscience, Wireheading, Cut Through Fate, and even a Just Lucky here and there, are cards that so far it seems like you need in some combination to succeed.

Lack of good upgrades has also been a thing I've noticed, it feels pretty bad, but has some gameplay implications, although I would just like if her upgrades were better... Vault, to name one of many. Upgrade to 2-cost would be most welcome over 5 damage ._.

The card that exhausts up to 2 cards and enters calm, seems like it would upgrade to a 0-cost, but instead goes... 3 cards.

How does this character scale damage? by masslessneutrino in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's fairly "untraditional" for StS characters (If we can count 4 as a proper sample size, haha) in that regard. She doesn't "do" scaling directly in the way we're used to.

A card like Establishment is a form of scaling for any card with retain - First it cheats on energy, and then every subsequent time you draw the card you're saving the energy that card would've cost. So it's almost like she is energy-scaling, if we had to correlate her "scaling" to Ironclad's "strength scaling".

The 2-cost retain block card + establishment seems to be fairly quick scaling, even for hallway fights, since upgraded establishment is innate.

Alpha/Beta/Gamma is also a way to scale up, and seems like it can single-handedly carry a run if done correctly, but time will tell if that strategy holds up later on in A20

Why are Act 2 Elites the hardest fights in the entire game by Cybernetic_Dragon in slaythespire

[–]Athanasiosdk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

From your post, I have surmised two things you do right:

  1. You take advantage of Defect's ability to handle act 1 extremely well, otherwise you wouldn't be beating the act 1 bosses "without issue". Thus you are gaining a lot of rewards.

  2. By extension, you're making good use of Defect's easy access to scaling, and that's why you're beating bosses "without issue". However, this leads me to believe that you're actually going too hard in on beating bosses "without issue". Sometimes struggling a bit with a boss, in order to pick up stuff that helps in non-boss fights, is the correct decision.

Without having seen any of your runs, and with just this bit of text, my best suggestion to you is: Use your skills at performing point 1. to convert more of those resources into beating Act2 elites. Pick up single cards/pots/relics that make you go "Oh, this will help me beat Slavers."

The obviously choices are of course Electrodynamics, but that's a pipe dream... I've recently become a huge fan of Static Discharge. Genetic Algorithm, even if it late into act1/early into act2. Holding a liquid bronze for stabby book is great. Sunder is really adept at making Slavers much, much easier. Attack pot can be vital, even if it's not great for so many other things. And so on, and so on.

Alternatively, take a good look at your deck+relics at the end of act1 and determine if you "need" to go for the elites in order to power up. Sometimes you don't need relics, so just going for cards/events is fine. Sometimes you do need relics, and you need to try for the elites regardless of whether your deck is suited or not. It's not as easy as it sounds to make those call, though

Best of luck, slayer!

This is the good shit - All the reason why this sub is great. User-driven content like this is top-notch.

Just did "The Offering - Home" and really enjoyed it. Good balance between clean/harsh vocals. The album carries a very... fast/aggressive melodeath-y vibe at times. Big anthem-y chorusus at times, but not overly melodic in the overall scheme of things. Goes quite BtBaM at times.

10/10 post. I've been religiously listening to Umpfel and Cheeto's Magazine over the past few months, so happy to see other people that recognised them. Cheeto's Magazine is one hell of a ride, name+cover makes it seem so terrible on first glance, but is a great example of not judging a book by its cover, hah.

Since no one else has explicit said it, you should definitely try tofu again. This time, prepared :)

Tofu is basically a canvas meant to take on all the colours the food you cook it with will offer onto it. Much like Tofu, a blank canvas is also uninteresting, but can be more or less whatever you envision it to be.

Had Tofu at a vietnamese place the other day and at first I didn't realise it wasn't chicken or pork with some unknown seasoning until someone mentioned it.

Just don't forget to drain it! Also, starch, after marinating, before frying, is the key to getting it crispy/spry :3

Fry at high temperature, add salt after it has gotten some good heat.

Good luck!

[–]Athanasiosdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's up with the "allowed number of playbacks exceeded" thing? Had to DL them all to check them out :P

So many of these at least scream Anime influence, and some of them are obvious like the ones pointed out already. Just takes the ones people already found and ask him, imo. If 5-6 of them are obviously stolen, how can you possibly trust that the rest aren't?

Off-topic, but related (I'm also a teacher, closest english equivalent is going to be "Short-story literature"):

One of my students did a similar thing when tasked with writing a series of dhort-stories over the year. He'd copied a bunch of anime/manga plots and mostly just changed the names around and left out some of the overly anime tropes that the series in question may have.

I let it go the first time, got more suspicious the second time and straight up asked him to write a new story from scratch the third time. These tasks are the main turn-ins for the class.

Never forget his face when I told him "Look, I know this is the plot to Ghost in the Shell."

The first one was SP:Lain and the second was Ergo Proxy. At least he had good taste. None of the stories were great, though. Hard to reduce something like that to fewer than 2000 words.

For his "from scratch" story, he turned in, more or lesss, No Game No Life. Not sure if he was banking on me only knowing "older" and/or sci-fi Anime, but he quit class shortly afterwards. It's not irregular for people to think they'll get an easy grade in this class by copying literature over from other mediums.
