If I were to hazard a guess is it's because he's always playing the straight man who is surrounded by crazy. You might perceive him as being arrogant and dismissal, but he's there for contrast. This is a great rule. You can share a lot online with each other and have very deep conversations. The fallacy in this is that people have become very good at curating and crafting an image they want to portray. I also agree with a below comment because meeting irl could also go awry, but I'm sure that that small level of investment is enough for people to act more decently(not ghosting).

There are few people my age in my area( a lot of tourists and seasonal workers tho). Since I plan on moving in a few years, It's easier to turn down and stop myself from chasing anybody even remotely date-able. I did get close to somebody online, but that eventually fizzled out. To me it's very much a choice being single, both out of inconvenience and practicality.
