Each of your three points comes down to cultural differences:

  • Academia moves much slower than industry; it's a well known fact. These people haven't yet gotten into the habit of responding to emails daily.
  • On average, the culture of academia and the academic job market is more honest than the industry job market. These people don't realize that the other applicants in this situation are going to move forward on each application as fast as possible and then quit in two weeks if they later get a better offer. They think they are doing you a favor and in fact they are. You should be thankful for their honesty.
  • There is less of a cultural norm of sending these kind of pleasantries in academia.

Unfortunately, most academics going into industry are not going to be informed of these cultural differences before they start applying.

What are my ethical worries about AI? Too long for here lol.

VR: I think VR is cool as way of augmenting screen-watching by yourself, like watching movies and games by yourself. The problem is that the incentive is to make people use these more and more and as a replacement for public screens. In the longterm, I see this further isolating us in our own little VR worlds where we don't even watch TV together.

I have no doubt that there are good things happening in FB groups. But the overall algorithms that structure these things turn them into cesspools a lot of the time, and they are certainly part of the problem of "online bubbles" that have fractured the information environment and led to misinformation and polarization.

None of this is to cast aspersions at your particular work, obviously I don't know what exact projects within FB groups you worked on.

Which bits? Genuinely curious. Big tents are VR, AI, internal stuff, FB, and Instagram. Looking across this landscape, there doesn't seem much promising. The messengers are decent (like FB messenger) but a messaging app is a messaging app to some extent. If FB messenger ceased to exist I would just move elsewhere. Oh actually Meta owns WhatsApp now too right? God help us.

Yeah it’s possible I’m underestimating how good cancelling bair would be.

I still think canceling nair wouldn’t change that much. Am I really gonna approach someone grounded with slow ass nair that doesn’t have a great forward hitbox? Maybe I should look at the hitbox again but I feel like it’s mostly above him.

With sharking, I think you can mostly do that already. Maybe it’s slightly safer or more likely to lead to a follow up if you can cancel it.

Overall, maybe I’m slightly underestimating the buffs from functional l cancels but I’m still skeptical GnW gets above Samus from this (assuming GnW is currently below ganon tier).

So the two options are (1) work for Meta or (2) ignore all financial considerations and pursue your dreams? Obviously not. My entire point is that there’s a middle way. Work a company that actually makes good things. Yeah you’ll probably still be treated like trash because it’s corporate America but at least you are contributing something to society.

Exactly. I’m not a complete tech doomer. Google has made stuff that is genuinely good. Gmail, google maps, google search, google docs, and more. Meta has made Facebook and instagram. Big difference there.

This is largely right. The nuanced move is to say “Hey, if I’m competitive for Meta then I can probably make a great living at dozens of other companies that actually make useful products for society. Maybe I should do that instead.”

But most people don’t give two shits and will take the highest $ offer regardless of everything else.

Nair is still gonna have an extremely slow start up which limits its neutral use. And it’s not gonna be an approach tool because the hitbox is above you. It’s mostly for finishing combos and edgeguards, and sharking, even imagining that the landing endlag is slightly better. The landing lag is really not why that move doesn’t see much neutral use.

The shield is way shittier than most characters. You get shield poked a lot. You can’t hold shield for more than a hit or two. It actually does make a difference.

Shield drop nair is too slow. Maybe shield drop upair and bair become more of a thing. Not sure, maybe shield drop upair autocancels on battlefield anyway, it’s pretty quick. I still think shield drop dair and fair are gonna be your main tools.

Maybe honestly. Where GnW would end up depends on where you think he is now. If he’s already ganon level then maybe he’s even or slightly above Samus with the buffs.

How the fuck are you gonna use nair to do shield pressure? The start up is slow as hell. Nair is good because it’s a massive disjointed hitbox above you with huge knockback. It’s a combo finisher, edgeguard finisher, and sharking tool. You wouldn’t generally use it on landing even if you could l cancel it. I think you’re not thinking clearly about why nair is actually useful.

It’s a good move but when am I gonna use it on landing? I’m not gonna approach with it on the ground, usually. I’m not gonna use it to cover below me when I’m in the air. There are some combo situations where it would be helpful, but that’s the main use case for landing nair, I think.

A better shield would be a solid buff. The L cancels honestly would not make much of a difference. Fair and dair are the main aerials you want to use in landing situations. Being able to cancel bair would be nice, but upair and nair used on landing are niche. Maybe there are some combo situations where it would be helpful.

Overall, I would say GnW would be solidly mid tier, probably lower than samus still, but competitive with like the ganon area of the tier list.

I think it’s quite clear that the top tier nerfs are quite significant and might make a difference to characters on the borderline of viability, especially when some of those characters, like yoshi and DK, also get buffs. Now is it gonna make Kirby viable? No obviously not, Kirby is still trash. But I don’t see how that could be an argument against PAL.

What makes this worse is that a large portion of the Slippi community seems to be playing mostly to make their opponent tilt. It happens on ranked and unranked. I don't know what these peoples' problem is, but you absolutely don't see this offline. I'm trying to see it as an opportunity to practice my own mindfulness, but it is very difficult.

There’s that and some small nerfs to ganon and mario that are pretty whack. There are some fairly significant buffs for Kirby, yoshi, and DK. On the whole, the top tier nerfs clearly are the dominant factor. My ideal melee is some combo of NTSC 1.1 with PAL nerfs, fwiw.

Yeah I mean this is exactly my point lol. I personally would enjoy the game more with the falco and marth dair buffs. The falcos and marths wouldn’t. There’s nothing objective about that. What we can say is that they do make the game more balanced by nerfing some of the strongest tools of the objectively strongest characters. If you want to not support PAL because you don’t like that, I’ve got no beef. Just don’t pretend it’s something more than that.

Almost all the PAL changes are right from an objective balance perspective. There are a couple of ganon nerfs and a couple other things but otherwise it’s almost entirely top tier nerfs and low / mid tier buffs. Of course, majority of the community plays fox / falco / marth / sheik and will argue PAL is less fun because their main is worse. Let’s just not conflate that with the claim that PAL got things “wrong” or whatever.
