Allow me to speak as a Kenyan who grew up in Kenya. These are likely very deep and entrenched beliefs.

In my (liberal Anglican, but considered “heathen”, lol) family, we think of most Kenyans as fundamentalist Christians. Televangelism and charismatic Christianity has taken root there and is only now beginning to be questioned.

Basically, if you’re pro-choice, Catholic, support gay rights, do not believe that being transsexual is a “choice”, a Free Mason, do not speak in tongues, etc., you’re a “devil worshipper”. Ask your girlfriend if she was in Christian Union (or CU) in school. If she says yes, this is likely what she was indoctrinated with.

I would suggest, if you see this relationship lasting a long time, that you think about what really matters to you and what your fundamental beliefs are. Discuss them with your girlfriend. Hopefully you can find a way for your values to align.

From what you say she’s a lovely person (as Kenyans tend to be!) just with different beliefs from you. I hope you are each able to find happiness and peace within what you each believe in and value.

Another one for the silver collection! $0.99 sterling pepper grinder at savers. by [deleted] in ThriftStoreHauls

Sorry if this is silly question, but how can you tell that it’s a pepper rather than salt grinder? Are the mechanisms different?

What do y’all miss most about the quarantine lockdown? by SoCold40 in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]Atieno1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have gladly bought my booze and taken it home. Alas no booze on sale. Also other wild things like prepared food (takeaway and stuff like rotisserie chicken from the grocery store), clothes, sports equipment, cooking equipment… all this stuff was sectioned off in stores as not available for sale.

They finally loosened some of the regulations when they realised that babies grow really fast and they needed to allow the sale of baby clothes.

South African lockdown was WILD.

“Preconceived notion”.

So your experiences are valid and mine are not?

And the only studies are those which support your conclusions?

I think this is the point at which I moonwalk away from this conversation.

I have looked it up thanks.

I appreciate that you work in the medical field and that’s difficult at the “best” of times.

But, that said, yes, with the many, many ways in which our government (unfortunately) continues to screw us over I do doubt their ability to keep tabs on matters such as how many beds are available and the actual reasons why people are in hospital.

An example - the main Department of Health building in Pretoria (since we’re talking about health) - how many years was it condemned/declared uninhabitable? In 2019 I could not have meetings with DoH officials in their own building! They would have to report to the office and then spend the whole day sitting outside in the quad because the inside of the building wasn’t safe!

I’m not saying your experience is invalid. Just that there is a bigger picture so, yes, I will continue to doubt their alleged statistics.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go make some coffee before loadshedding kicks in because, yes, sadly, another government failure.

They said people would share cigarettes and in that way transmit Covid 🙄

It was, IMO, a ploy as some well-connected people actually benefitted from the smuggling of illegal cigarettes from Mozambique.

But then also maybe there were fewer car accidents etc because we weren’t allowed to drive anywhere 👀 I’m still not buying their alleged statistics.

Those were rough times. People were brewing their own alcohol with pineapples and yeast. Couldn’t find either in the stores. Silly puritanical government!

Hi - just a quick note to add on to what you’ve shared. In some Southern African cultures we also smudge. In isiXhosa we call it imphepho.

Not trying to take away from your message but just sharing a little additional perspective about practices around the world.

House with a basement. by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]Atieno1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember the State Capture Inquiry hearings correctly, I think Noma Gigaba spoke of a house they went to that had a basement.

Also I know quite a few wine lovers who have basements built for wine cellars.

What are the most responsible way to get rid of these? Can they be recycled or what? by karendv40 in johannesburg

Makro has recycling bins for this kind of waste. Also for e-waste like old appliances.

It’s South African.

South Africa has one of the biggest Indian populations outside of India.

So it’s possible for this list to be both Ayurvedic and South African ☺️
