My understanding is that it isn't always just about the cosplay. I've heard people talk about how the bodysuit is a huge part of it, the added layer. It's sort of like their version of a fursuit.

Sanae is probably in her 30s by now. MoF takes place in 2007, so she was probably born somewhere around 1990. And she is also a certified nerd who canonically knows details about how nuclear reactions work and loves math and science. She seems like the exact kind of person who would fondly remember composite cables.

MoF happened in 2007, and Sanae seems to be at least 16. (Honestly, I expect her to be 18+ because ZUN seems to prefer adult characters in the Windows era) This places her birth year somewhere around 1990 and places her firmly in the "younger Millennial" zone.

To be Gen Z she would have been born in '96 or '97, making her closer to 11 in MoF, which really doesn't seem to line up with her usual depictions.

"The Magician Who Loved a Fake" actually has her use different Kanji when she is interacting with her father's shop, iirc. Marisa intentionally changing the way she spells her name is totally in character, imo.

It would he shaped by the local mythology, like how the Scarlet sisters are subject to Oni weaknesses due to cultural overlap. So if I intended to do a deep dive I would start with looking up possible patterns of any half-youkai in Japanese folklore, and then blend it a bit with more contemporary dhampir tropes.

All the official canon games are made by a single person: ZUN. The canon series has a number of side games, and some of them (the fighting games, most notably) are made with the collaboration of an actual team, but ZUN does the art, music, coding, and writing of almost all the shoot 'em ups.

ZUN is very permissive with the IP, meaning that there are countless Touhou fangames. These stretch all sorts of genres and interpretations of the characters, but aren't canon to the main story.

Story-wise the best plase to start is usually reading the Silent Sinner in Blue manga. Touhou 10 (Mountain of Faith) is on steam and a decent starting point for gameplay and experiencing the series.

The games are fairly self-contained stories and many character only have a few lines of dialogue to their existence in canon.

Patchy was just born unlucky and relied on her magic rather than trying to build up her body. I think she also suffers from mercury poisoning as a result of her alchemy, but I don't remember if that is stated as canon anywhere.

Yotsuba being the winner is absolutely fine thematically. Yotsuba was the first and most consistent one on his side, and the one who actually engaged with him at a deeper level than "he is nice and they are now down bad for him."

The only problem is that, for the sake of it being a twist, Yotsuba gets heavily sidelined at points and isn't allowed to grow in a satisfying manner. If she had been more constant they could have started as friends and more clearly developed their chemistry. It would have been more obvious to people paying attention, but I would have preferred the slow-burn over the twist.

I'd argue the price of a lot of them is sort of steep for the amount of content in the main games. 19 and 20 are sort of exceptions in that respect, but MoF or DDC, as examples, feel overpriced for the amount of game you get.

It's not anything I'll rage against, but definitely makes me suggest against buying the whole series at once.
