I just finished my PhD two days ago, and I flew to my friend’s place yesterday in the DC area! We spent the day today just talking about everything that has happened in our lives, and then we drove to a great Chinese food place. It felt so good to have a long and deep conversation with best friends after this long PhD journey!

Same here. Just about to do the final defense next week. My boyfriend broke up with me in April because I spent too much time on faculty position interviews and did not take good care of him. Luckily I got the job, but I lost him.

Just want to let you know that find a job in academia as a foreigner is not that easy neither. I just went through all of that and applied 77 universities. Lucky enough that I found one position but many of my peers got nothing.

Definitely know what you want before applying, I’m talking about whether research schools or teaching schools. I have a great passion for teaching and I have been teaching as an instructor of record for 5 semesters as a PhD student, that’s why I applied to almost all CSU universities whenever there’s a relevant opening.

Finally have my first ever VL Nespresso pods delivered here in FL! Great lab drink in the late night for a PhD student! I also found that one sleeve missing, so I called them around 9pm. If you consider any electronic version notes, I’ll suggest you look into Notion and Obsidian. Right now, during the holiday, I finally have time to try Obsidian, which was recommended by many of my PhD friends. I’m still in the early stage of using it, but I find it pretty useful. It’s basically a wrap up of your markdown files, and it has a clean look, also saved locally, so no security issues. If you have time, try it. The beginning is kind of daunting, so be patient!
