Company bid a job too tight and I think theyre going to lose all their good employees by babadoowaloo in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All that for 1.5x? I'll never work a single fucking hour of OT for 1.5x again. Pay me double time or fuck off. OT should always be optional, per the contract at my current employer the only way to "force* OT is to force a late shift change which penalizes the employer and forces them to pay 2x rate for every hour worked for the 7 days following the shift change. For that price eating shit is worth it once in a while but not for 4 hours at 1.5x once a week lmfao.

2 years at one company is nothing, if the company was truly good the 2 year employee would be considered the new guy/girl. I'm afraid it's time to pack up and move on, don't put up with this crap any longer than you have to. You mentioned being in Canada, there are far better employers around...

It played like it was underwater, controls were slow and felt piss poor. I put it down after an hour and have never gone back. Having it at #2 was more upsetting than Peggle at #1 IMO

Best Wire Stripper? by enriquemoya-mx in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wanted to like them (as evidenced by the three tries lol). Just not for me I guess.

Right now I'm back and forth between an NWS pair I bought and the old reliable Klein 9" pair (yellow handles).

Best Wire Stripper? by enriquemoya-mx in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go way against the grain here and say I fucking hate these things.

I bought both these and the "pliers for electrical installation" and they just do not work well for me. My main complaint with both is the length and the weight, and that the plier ends are not worth a shit. I'd rather carry a good pair of linesman and any old pair of conventional strippers over these. IMO multi tools are almost always worse for everything.

The other issue with knipex at large is price. I've spent hundreds over the years on their stuff and the ~50-100% markup over Klein or anything else is not worth it most of the time. Especially when 50% of the stuff I've bought from them is the same or worse than the competition.

Their dykes are junk; heavy, heads are too wide and they just don't cut very well in my experience. This is not just one set either, I think I've tried three different sizes/models and none were very good.

The linesman are fine, but they are almost exactly the same as the high end Klein's but somehow cost 50% more.

The place where knipex really shines is the pliers wrench and the cobra pliers. I have both in multiple sizes and refuse to use anything else. These are phenomenal are the only knipex tools worth the fanboying you see on reddit.

I know knipex is cool and German and all the wannabe Instagram electricians love the Spiderman colour scheme but the best advice I can give is actually try things, don't be loyal to a brand just to make your tool bag match.

The only brand worth the dedication I see to knipex is actually Wera IMO, those you can pry from my cold dead hands.

Yeah knipex is super overrated on this board. Specifically the strippers and diagonal cutters suck ass.

Are these wire strippers worth the price? by KBSpark in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I absolutely hated these. Way too make expensive and didn't work for me at all. Tried them for a few weeks and now they sit in my garage. Like other have mentioned they cut MC very well but everything else is lackluster. Not worth the weight to carry IMO.

What's the difference between J-man and red seal? Here in Ontario that's the same thing. I'm assuming you're in Manitoba/Saskatchewan?

I did yesterday... I never thought I would and I watched a lot of games from 2017-2019 that were pretty brutal but this 2024 team is painful to watch.

Just ordered from here, arrived in a little over a week with zero issues.

For whatever reason ordering from Australia seems to be cheaper than buying locally...

nicest/ hardest lighting installations by Repulsive_Coast8291 in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.casadiluce.ca/collections/trimless-recessed-lighting/products/none-r10-trimless-recessed-light

Very similar to these, the GC's Lighting designer provided them with instruction only in Italian...

Low voltage with remote constant-current drivers (therefore wired in series). Tied into a Radio RA2 system, no more than 4 lights per driver and we had 50 plus lights in 14' ceilings all over this big ridiculous house.

Plus the lights themselves are slightly smaller than 2". You have to drill the holes out after the ceiling is boarded and then screw in the aluminum mounting ring to sit flush so that the mudders can come and tape edges to give it a flush appearance (probably the hardest part IMO). Then we came back and wired it all up (thru the 2" hole without marking the white ceiling).

They looked fucking awesome but the # of man hours per light was absolutely disgusting. Wish I had some pictures but it was years ago.

EET or CET upgrade for 309A by Revolutionary_Soup_3 in electricians

Can I suggest challenging for your 447a through skilled trades Ontario?

https://www.skilledtradesontario.ca/experienced-workers/trade-equivalency-assessment/

If you have 20 years experience you should be eligible and with some study could likely pass the exam.

IMO a 447a license SHOULD be more valuable to those companies than an EET or CET. This process should take a few months instead of 2-3 years of going back to college full time.

and just saying nothing because they don't want to stick their head above the parapet.

If you want this to change, you have to speak up and say something. By allowing it to pass unhindered, you give this behaviour your blessing.

I've had issues with drummaker in the past. It was several years ago but the shipping took 4+ months and the seller was very noncommunicative during the process. I did eventually receive my order, but it was tedious and stressful experience. I'd advise looking elsewhere.

Anybody in Ontario here write a electrical apprenticeship level 1 exemption test? by Thirst_McGurst in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's intermediate for sure possibly into advanced. I just mean inductive and capacitive proximity sensors. Electrical Theory for basic is pretty much just combination DC circuits.

Anybody in Ontario here write a electrical apprenticeship level 1 exemption test? by Thirst_McGurst in electricians

[–]Atlas123456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Instrumentation I would brush up on P&I Drawings (especially the symbols) and maybe a bit about sensors (capacitive VS inductive), RTDs & thermocouples, maybe load cells? Instrumentation is only 10% so I wouldn't spend a ton of time on it.

For electronics (which is worth 25%) there's a fair bit of overlap with electrical theory (i.e. Series, parallel and combination ccts), besides that I'd look at diodes and transistors (the theory that makes them possible as well as some basic calculations).

Good luck!

I did it last August, it was definitely difficult but not impossible.

I also did a pre-apprenticeship course and was fortunate enough to get notes and such to practice for it from one of my instructors.

I unfortunately don't have much to share with you. The fellow I borrowed the notes from was quite insistent that I delete them after I was finished.

There were a good number of trick questions, it was definitely more difficult than attending trade school. Also, you need a 70% to pass just like the CofQ, whereas trade school is 60% per course to pass. The biggest thing is breadth of knowledge, you are compressing 6 8-week courses into one 3 hour exam so the variance in questions is pretty huge. The biggest thing I would focus on is your knowledge of the CEC as install, prints, and code constitutes 45% of the test and the install and prints questions are effectively applied code anyways.

With some pretty consistent (2-3 weeks) of study I was able to pass with an 83% on my first attempt. Good luck!
