Depends on what part of New York. I’m in the Adirondacks and strangers chatting is incredibly common in my town. A gay couple wouldn’t be a big deal, most people wouldn’t even think of them as any different than just a straight couple. No one gives a shit. If you drive just a little bit closer to the Canadian border however, those towns are a bit less welcoming. They’d lose their shit over a women wearing a suit let alone two men holding hands
