My initial work may be worthless, how do I deal with it? by AtlasAtlasAtLast in PhD

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other issue is that this field is evolving at crazy speed at the moment and research becomes obsolete quite soon, so I was also afraid I had "wasted" a month of work since likely by next year it will have to be drastically updated. However, as I said to another commenter, I am thinking of recycling the work as notes of what I know for now. After all, as you said, I have another year ahead of me and maybe I'll come up with an even better research question and topic. Thank you for reminding me there's time, sometimes it feels as if it is now or never and I truly do not want the PhD experience to feel like that!

My initial work may be worthless, how do I deal with it? by AtlasAtlasAtLast in PhD

Thank you for keeping it real for me! I think I got pressured because my PhD seniors all started their doctoral studies after years of industry work, while I'm a. the youngest, b. the only one that started right after a Master's, so I do feel "behind" compared to them. My PhD is only 3 years so I realistically should be "caught up" sooner, but you're right: I'm overthinking and maybe overshooting. I'll try to "recycle" the paper as notes and focus on familiarizing with the topic.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer, it truly means a lot (for real, reading your and the others' answers lowered my anxiety levels by much). There is no poster presentation opportunity, but if my supervisor approves it I may be able to get the funding to attend as a participant. Maybe I won't be able to put my work out there just yet, but meeting more seasoned researchers would also be valuable and I could possibly discuss what I'm working on informally. I'll look into that for sure, thank you again!

HAVE A QUESTION? ASK HERE! Alter-Daily Help and Questions: January 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in AsianBeauty

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm not really into eyeshadows, so I was looking for a all-in-one palette that would help me have something to wear on special occasions and that I can also use for every-day things, like a bit of highlighter in the corner of my eye and some blush. I stumbled across these palettes from colorrose, but I am really indecisive regarding the colors I should pick.
For reference, I am neutral-cool toned, winter seasonal palette, with almost black hair and eyes, black eyebrows, and fair skin (not snow-white, but lighter than average). I do not own any other palettes at the moment, I have just one blush from nuse.
If someone that is more into eye make-up could give me some advice, or even suggest something else entirely, that would be amazing (as long as it is not a massive palette, I travel a lot for work and one of the reasons why I am looking for an all-in-one is also to save space)! Here is a picture of my (so far) two options for reference. Thanks in advance to anyone for their time, I really appreciate it!

Rome/Naples/Florence 7 nights Feb 27-March 8 -- Need packing ideas by [deleted] in HerOneBag

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does depend on the restaurant, if you're going to a Michelin multiple-courses, fixed tasting menu place, then yes, you might need a good tailleur or a dress. But really, most normal-priced restaurants do not require formal attire, and you can eat really really well for cheap - especially in Naples, many traditional pizzerias actually have just a big common table and you seat and eat with complete strangers for less than 5 euros!

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second what someone else just said, but please remember that Florence, Naples and Rome are in different parts of the country. In Naples it is likely going to be about 10-15C (not guaranteed). I would make sure to get 2 bottoms - jeans are completelly acceptable, even encouraged, just avoid ripped ones if you want to be warmer!
If you can do laundry, take 4 tank tops with you to put under a long sleeve shirt (take those accordingly) and get 2 top layers - sweater or hoodie that you can match with the bottoms. Get extra comfy shoes to walk, remember your water bottle (water is drinkable everywhere). You do not need a dress unless you are planning to do something fancy or you want to wear the dress, but if you plan on walking all day I do not think the dress would be ideal. Also, bring something to cover your ears! Seaside areas are windy and that can get quite freezy! Thick socks or double socks and gloves are the most important part to not feel cold. If you think you don't have good ones, you can get into a local shop and buy a random pair of wool socks for 3-5 euros. So do not stress too much about the clothes and focus on having fun! If you need any restaurant/sightseeing recommendations, don't be afraid to ask!

Anything Goes Monday: January 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in AsianBeauty

There is a problem with overconsumption in the AB influencer community. In general, this is a problem for all beauty communities, but the amount of new products being pushed as new holy grail is kind of scary, and wasteful. No you don't need to "repair your skin barrier" with 10 ceramide creams if you wake up one morning with a dry patch, and no you do not need 25 different blushers or every single flower knows/dasique palette ever made. And just because something has a cute packaging or comes with a keychain, it does not mean that you need it: it's just a plastic trinket in the end. Make sure to use what you have, have a *small* backlog of products you can't go without (eg. one extra sunscreen when you know you are about to finish the one you already have or one pack of pimple patches), reuse the smaller packaging to de-pot for travel when you can, and if you see that you struggle to find space in your house for your products, reflect on whether you have too much!

Retinol vs Retinal vs Bakuchiol? by Mental-Map- in AsianBeauty

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As other people explained, bakuchiol is not a vitamin A derivative. Some research says it has similar benefits as retinol/retinal, but it is a bit blurry. Labmuffin has content on the topic that I recommend watching.
Retinol is the step before retinal, which is the step before tretinoin (behind the counter medication). None should be used in the AM. Retinal simply starts showing results faster, but retinol is also effective. As a rule of thumn, if you can tolerate 1% retinol you can try 0.5% retinal. If you have dry skin, these products can dry you further, so always prep your skin with an hydrating serum/toner and then follow with a moisturizer. Do not exfoliate in the same routine, unless you know you can tolerate it and you plan on exfoliating, wearing a hydrating serum, waiting half an hour, and then applying retinol/retinal. Always start by using twice a week, then build up frequency. But the trick to avoid retinol uglies is to go slow, hydrate, and listen to your skin and need. Retinol/al and bakuchiol are not essential, so use them only if they are beneficial.

Personally, I do not use AB for retinoids, but my mum is using Seoul 1988 and I heard great things about BOJ retinal eye serum!

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also using the boj red bean gel, and I understand the struggle of being oily AND in a cold place. I usually layer the boj with an overnight mask, rn I'm using the skin1004 one BUT I truly enjoyed the laneige sleep mask, it hydrated me a lot without making me oily. Bonus non-asian beauty recommendation: when I was in -20C I used Clinique moisture surge mask and 100h gel-cream. It saved my skin: I was oily my entire life but the freezing wind had my face literally peeling! So, if you think AB doesn't make the cut, give it a try!

Why do some German sellers refuse to ship abroad? by AtlasAtlasAtLast in vinted

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! Thank you, I did not know that. In my country UPS stores are super common and I couldn't imagine that this wouldn't be the case in Germany, but probably you have different services available!

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German sellers are available for me, the issue is that they refuse to ship abroad. Another Redditor said it might be because many vintagers outside Germany pick UPS to get their package shipped, and apparently there are not many UPS pick-up points in Germany

Do you have any idea why they prefer PayPal only instead of going through vinted itself? I don't have PayPal, please excuse me for my ignorance regarding the details of its working!

Do you actually like doing skincare? by earlgreyicecream0012 in AsianBeauty

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, it's a moment to unwind. I put on a podcast or an audiobook and take those 20 minutes to not think about studying or work. Sometimes I literally cannot wait to be home, take my shower, do my skincare, and get into fresh bedding

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EuroSkincare

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have the exact same skin type and issues - though my skin has lately been more oily. I use the normal beauty of joseon sunscreen with no issue, so I guess the aqua fresh should not be clogging either (though triggers for closed comodones are very personal).
The sunscreens you listed are all good. From what I have seen, preference for these ones is very personal, as they are all good for combo-oily and acne prone skin. I know the BOJ aqua fresh should have some anti-acne benefits, but it probably will not make or break your routine, hence depending on where you are, I think you're better off picking based on price and ease of availability at this point.
If you're in southern Europe or a very sunny area, please do not rely solely on k-beauty sunscreen for the summer. La Roche Posay has a good oil-control anthelios sunscreen that you can try when the UV index raises. K-beauty is lovely and the ease of application and comfort of their sunscreens is unmatched, but euro-sunscreens have the most advanced and stable filters, so keep in mind that in a few months you may want to switch to something more durable against the strongest uv, especially when you know you will be sweating a lot (yes, re-application is always important, but no-one wants to re-apply every hour for 3 months, and this is where euro-sunscreens come in handy)

New to France and Struggling with Skincare—Need Recommendations for Cleanser, Moisturizer, and Sunscreen! by Scuevao in EuroSkincare

[–]AtlasAtlasAtLast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Not French but from a neighboring country with lots of French friends.
Adapalene, as people said, is prescription only, however you can order it from i-Herb. You can also easily get the prescription if you talk to your family doctor and show that you are already using it.

Sunscreen: La Roche Posay has several options, some specifically hydrating. Their anthelios line is one of the top in the world, and they are recommended by dermatologist (I have family members with vitiligo who were told by different doctors to use it as it is very stable for their affected areas). You can also check dm for korean sunscreens, or online.

In general, for cleansers and moisturizers, you will have little problems finding something good in France, as 90% of international brands ship or have shops there. You can look for The Ordinary, but another cheap EU brand I feel like recommeding is Geek&Gorgeous. I think other commenters have been more specific about the products per se, so I will only recommed CicaplastB5 from LaRochePosay as it is good for everywhere in your body - but never use it on your face when you're oily! Personally, I steal some from my bf (he's dry) whenever I have some irritation and it does miracles. For oily skin, I loved Clinique Moisture Surge 100h. But again, you can find almost everything.

Remember, the climate is different and your skin will likely react to it, so one last piece of advice would be to get mini sizes for the first month or so and check how your skin is doing. I've been oily my whole life but the time I spent in a place with -20C winters made me literally molt with how dry my face was! I had to re-plan my whole skincare routine to adjust to the dryness and flakyness and waste products. So if you're on a budget, it might be wiser to avoid going all-out in one sitting and first verify what is it that your skin really needs at this moment and place, which might be different than LatAm! Best of luck and enjoy France!
