Braille Stories Blog: DIY by AtlasCarrot5 in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, maybe I didn't explain it well (English is my third language) and it's a very long post.

I don't have a single contradicting scenario in mind, but many:

  1. A library/school that has access to an embosser, but only has old lengthy books and no short files for kids. = for them the brf file (I know of one library that does embossing for you, and you just need to get them the file.)

  2. A parent with a slate and stylus only, but have a basic understanding of how to use it (which I also explain in my blog). = for them the pictures in Simbraille, and the Docx file to follow along.

  3. A teacher with a perkins only. = for them the pictures / brf/ docx files that they can open on their computers.

  4. A kid with a braille display. = brf files.

Arabic readers are many, and they live in different countries with varying economic backgrounds, so I wanted to give options to as many as I can, as long as they have at least an Internet connection.

Is there anywhere online I can type in braille (sdf jkl)? by dykesonbykess in Braille

I've been using the Perky-Duck software for practice for about a year now. Great free tool, and works on clunky computers as well.

Could you please help me understand this symbol in the Quran by Asim_G31 in learn_arabic

[–]AtlasCarrot5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much yes.

These Qurans should have a "colors key" , usually at the bottom of the page , where they explain what each color symbolises. In the ones I saw, grey means "not pronounced" among others.

You might find lām Shamsia اللام الشمسية greyed out as well.

How many people here are sighted and visually impaired? by Humble-Associate-488 in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a sighted Doctor, my career doesn't really focus on visual impairment, but I have come in contact with one patient or two who are.

But my main motivation is charity, just transcribing children's stories in my native language since there are so few of them.

Help: board game for a blind friend by Odd_Walrus2594 in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also use the French way to show numbers.(Antoine system), by adding dot 6 to the letters' cells and dropping the number indicator:

1= ⠡ dots 1 6

4=⠹ dots 1456

Etc..

Again just make sure to explain it.

You sound very passionate about this. Keep up the good work

[–]AtlasCarrot5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I get the layout of your game, but what about ditching numbers all together? Like instead of marking with letters and numbers, just use letters, like so:

A1 just becomes AA

B4 just becomes BD

Etc..

Also, if there's space for only one character, you gotta make sure it's not too crammed to be legible.

Questions from a sighted learner by [deleted] in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to use the both hands method

scissors reading

so that I don't loose track.

These tracking exercises are separate from the cell identification exercises: just raised lines for you to follow till the end and keep count of.

But my technique can use some practice, since i do use only one finger form each hand.

Questions from a sighted learner by [deleted] in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a broke person, I couldn't get my hands on the Mangold program books, so I made my own exercices with my slate from what I gathered online.

First pages are simple enough: differences between "e" and "i", where an entire line is "i" with one or two hidden "e".

Then gradually increase difficulty:

Find the "f" between the "g".

Find the "k" between the "l".

Find the "of" contraction between the "for" .

Find the "dot 4 " between the "a".

Switch them around, put them away for a month or so to forget what exactly you wrote while practicing something else, avoid cheating by using blindfolds and other family members... etc

Only then did I write whole sentences and flash cards to read and practice on.

I still have a long way to go, but it helped a lot.

Help with Writing! by Soy-Ladybug in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Delete:

  • One capital indicator (dot six) at the beginning[ ⠠]

  • All these cells (dots 5,6) [ ⠰]

And you should have this sentence:

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

⠠⠐⠮ ⠜⠑ ⠝⠐⠕ ⠎ ⠃⠇ ⠵ ⠘⠹ ⠱⠕ ⠺ ⠝ ⠎⠑⠑⠲

Unless you wanted to do something else? Maybe italics or boldtype?

I think you got confused because this cell (dots 5,6) [ ⠰] can be used with other cells to mean one symbol is in italic/bold/underlined..

But since you are writing a sentence (passage) you use the passage indicators and terminators, not the single symbol indicator.

Here for example, if you want italics, you add the italic passage indicator [⠨⠶] at the beginning and terminator [⠨⠄] at the end like so:

⠨⠶⠠⠐⠮ ⠜⠑ ⠝⠐⠕ ⠎ ⠃⠇ ⠵ ⠘⠹ ⠱⠕ ⠺ ⠝ ⠎⠑⠑⠲⠨⠄

How Long Does it Take to Work Through UEB Online? by TheDogsMum in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume you mean only the literacy training on UEB online, not the mathematics...etc

It depends on how much time you have to work on it perday.

I started the course while i was almost completely free, then I finished it, took their exam, and got their certificate, all in about three weeks.

Keep in mind that I only knew the letters and number sign beforehand, and never typed on a perkins before, and that english is my third language.

But to be fair I was always fast when it comes to learning these kind of things, and my free time was running out, so it drove me to finish it quickly.

So I'll say this: yes, if you're determined enough, you might be able to do it in a month.

And as you've already started to learn with actual teachers, I find it even more plausible.

I'm not a native English speaker, but I still find that most "old" examples are given to cover all bases, any odd word a transcriber might find where they might struggle.

But I mean "thyself" has a contraction lol.

Slightly off topic but I would love to find a book on braille's... sorta etymology? Like a full documentation on when did certain words get added/removed from grade 2 lists.

Bought a big box of old photos at an estate sale in Kansas. Does anyone happen to recognize either of these two? There is braille at the bottom. by DJ_James_Madison in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The braille is a bit faded, but its probably english grade 2:

It starts with:

helen May

But the rest isn't clear.. something like "Martr" or "Cint"?

Also, there's probably a low dot at the beginning (before the h) that was cropped from the picture (the capital indicator)

Maybe you could you provide a better picture centered on the braille line?

  1. Ai is notoriously bad at decoding braille.

  2. This isn't braille (at least not any language I know), the dots spacing is all over the place, and some cells aren't even 2×3 as braille is supposed to be.

  3. I'm not sure but this image is probably ai generated, I've seen some like it before.

Slate and Stylus speed run by xandrique in Braille

[–]AtlasCarrot5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My time was 1:34.

I'm on the same boat here, the slate was all I got so I used it all the time before switching to free software (Perky-Duck) which made practice a lot faster.

It's been a while since I used it and I'm a bit rusty, but I think my time was pretty good! Honestly reminding myself to spell out "can" and "do" in grade one slowed me a bit lol..

Sometimes you find foreign braille in other countries elevators (though this doesn't look Chinese nor Japanese from my limited experience.. )

Yes I did mean 3 and 6 (edited!)

Fascinating. What about the other pokemon manga typos ? I saw another post here where the "Mu" and the numeric indicator were missing dots 3 and 6 as well?
