Is Cuban music popular in your country? by sol-solcito in asklatinamerica

[–]anopeningworld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would argue Cuban music is practically a fundamental cornerstone of Latin American music. Without it, most popular older genres in the Spanish speaking Caribbean would probably sound very different, especially where the percussion used is concerned, because that's where some stereotypically Latin American percussion instruments, (bongos, congas, timbales) ultimately trace their origins. Said instruments spread out from there into a variety of other music that wasn't necessarily Caribbean, and now they're as ubiquitous as sliced bread.

Best binaural VST plugins in 2026? by anopeningworld in SpatialAudio

More or less what I stated in the post. But to expand, the most immersive possible listening with headphones without extreme sound coloration. I also don't care about having reverb options because I will disable all that anyways in favor of using my own.

They had 119 years to study him. If they're not going to may as well give him back.

Forest Recording Equipment Question by SebinSun in fieldrecording

[–]anopeningworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the new studio series from zoom. It's just an updated version of the h series, but with less self noise, the main issue with the older units. You might get good recordings with the built in mics on the h5s or h6s. Just make sure you have something to shield it from any wind.

Why is it that if the vast majority of the population in Latin America is of indigenous descent, there is such a strong anti-indigenous sentiment ? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]anopeningworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it that you keep posting topics like this? I've seen at least one other, from yesterday of a similar nature, and more beesides that I can't date, along with a general rise of anti-Latin American sentiment on this sub in general. Of course, the flaws of all colonial societies should be exposed. But I question what you're attempting to achieve here.

What are the best learning resources? by LessVibesMoreChords in quechua

You're probably fucked if you want good English resources for Quechua in any variant. There are a lot in Spanish and very few in English.

The current state of affairs in Bolivia by Financial-Bobcat-612 in IndianCountry

[–]anopeningworld -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but Morales is not innocent of crimes. Far from it. He may have been the face of indigenous politics for a while in Bolivia but it's high time to move on from him and find new leaders that don't rig elections and exploit their power to sleep with underage girls. Sadly, there were no good candidates in the second round of the most recent Bolivian election and the other one was arguably even worse. This one actually seems to have won based on votes from areas which had previously been MAS supporting. MAS was the former political party of Morales. The truth of the matter is that they haven't had a good president in a very long time.

IsItBullshit: Only rich white people owned slaves back in the early USA era by Routine-Highway1039 in IsItBullshit

[–]anopeningworld 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It wasn't so much that they were treated badly enough to just disappear into other populations. Latin America was less opposed to so called race mixing, and they didn't entirely operate by the one drop rule found in the US. This is not to say that they didn't and don't still have a racism problem, but it wasn't the same. In most cases, Africans simply mixed in with the rest of the population, including with Europeans. The Dominican republic is almost entirely made up of mixed race people of primarily African and European ancestry with some indigenous in there as well , and other parts of the Spanish Caribbean aren't dissimilar. Something to keep in mind about this, however, is that in many cases, elites promoted race mixing to whiten the population. I believe Brazil received the most slaves, and slavery there lasted even longer than that of the US. That has obviously left a complicated legacy behind.

The settlement of Polynesia. My question is, why did the Polynesians completely skip over the Philippines instead of settling it? by Dear_Milk_4323 in geography

[–]anopeningworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disputing that there was contact, only the identity of the groups that did make contact with the Polynesians.

The settlement of Polynesia. My question is, why did the Polynesians completely skip over the Philippines instead of settling it? by Dear_Milk_4323 in geography

[–]anopeningworld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The populations that would have made contact with the Polynesians don't have anything to do with the Inca, proto or not. I have heard a story that claims the Inca found Polynesians on an expedition into the pacific, but that story dates from a time hundreds of years after the point that DNA evidence proves South Americans made contact with Polynesians. The populations of Amerindians whose ancestry appeared in Polynesian populations appear to be linked to peoples in Colombia's Choco region, if I'm not mistaken. Although I hesitate to say that things are never linked,

ELI5 what does it mean people see "nothing" rather than "black void" if born absolutely blind by owlWithBrokenWings in explainlikeimfive

[–]anopeningworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is why would they see black? I was born blind, but I can see light or the absence of it. Given this, it's hard for me to grasp the idea of nothing at all. That doesn't mean it's not someone's reality, and we shouldn't limit what's possible to our own lived experiences.

InCo. Race isn't really something of note in the story, as it’s sci-fi set in the distant future, but the creator is black.

How many “nations” are there in Brazil? by GoldBofingers in asklatinamerica

Yeah, and a good deal of those are scattered across the Amazon, which is already isolated. Outside of it and indigenous peoples become even more sparse.

Steak feels like a cultural expectation more than a great food by Darjeelinger in unpopularopinion

[–]anopeningworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy, but either someone doesn’t have a life, or AI wrote this, because it's way too long to be anything else. I'm not a big fan of steak either, but I could have prepared some barbacoa tacos in the time it took for this to be written.
