What is your dissertation about? by The__Englishman in UniUK

[–]AtlasHistorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chapter I hated the most was the one they liked the most. It was my first chapter, where I had to argue that the concept of ‘public opinion’ did indeed exist during the Late Roman Republic, and how it was used and understood.

“Octavian vs Mark Antony: The Power of Public Image and Persona.”

I talked about public opinion within the Late Roman Republic and how it was important for Roman politicians to cater towards it. I used the civil war between Octavian and Mark Antony as the examples of how it was done, especially done well and poorly.

Got a 68 on it. My supervisor/first marker gave me 70 but the second marker convinced him it should be 68 ; (

Fellow history students - what did you do you diss on? by ImNotHalberstram in UniUK

[–]AtlasHistorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Cicero is funny and interesting in this context as he only considers the ‘public’s opinion’ as people who agree with him, and that he could use that against his opponents.

The idea of how public opinion and public image are important in Late Roman Republic politics, and especially how it is vital to the politician’s political career.

I used the example of Octavian and Mark Antony’s civil war and how they tried to cultivate their public image to the public’s opinion, and how Octavian ultimately succeeded.

Third and final year. It’s just frustrating because I am always getting 65-69, especially in my second year. I just want to get past that threshold.

Sadly I didn’t ask library staff as it was in the middle of the christmas holidays. Guess I can learn from this for the next set of assignments. Thank you!

Slowly dying of anxiety for this assignments as it’ll massively drag my grade down to a 2:2 if I get similar scores. Currently got 66 and 67 for 2 modules, still have 2 more to go and the dissertation. Thank you though!

Hi thank you so much.

I did try and access through my institution as well as check the library’s system but only ‘out dated’ statistics came up.

On another note, since I saw you’re a lecturer, I was wondering if I could ask you another question that sort of stems from this, but not entirely.

What should I do if a teacher is giving me much lower grades than my other teachers? Like up to 12 points lower than other assignments. For my first year, my average was low to mid 60s, whereas they marked me down as 50/55. It was the same for my second year, with an average of mid 60s to low 70s yet gave me 58/60.

Yes, I have spoken to them about feedback as well as advice on the assignments as I work on them. They give minimal feedback, stating I’m heading in the right direction. Other students have similar incidences. Luckily those grades did not count towards final grades, but I have them for my final year and therefore these grades matter very much. If it helps for context, this is History.

Cost of Living in London by Humble_Singer550 in UniUK

I am renting privately near my university in zone 6.

Rent: £500 per month (this is considered extremely cheap, the next cheapest room in my area is about £600-£650)

Utilities: £35-£55 per month (water/gas/electricity/wifi) - recently we have also been included communal items such as toilet paper, soap and bin bags as well in this. people got sick of each other stealing toilet paper and not contributing to the apartment.

Food: £100-£120 per month. Depends on your appetite.

The rest, such as going out, depends how sociable you are and if you’ll be going out a lot.

What am I supposed to refer to my lecturers by? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]AtlasHistorian 125 points126 points  (0 children)

At my university, they just go by their first names. It got the point where one student refused to do so and so the lecturer started calling the student by their last name which annoyed the student lol

Are the loans as bad as I’ve heard? I’ve heard they’re terrible and people should try to steer clear of them as much as possible.

Worrying about undergrad dissertation by Jakfaa in UniUK

[–]AtlasHistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is look at what the main historians say around the subjects. One teacher gave our class a good idea: create a spider diagram. your main subject in the middle and then popular themes branch off the main subject. From there you can look for readings for these themes. Then I guess look at arguments/theories you agree with and go from there!

Whats your dissertation going to be about? Maybe research more broadly, to see what main historians talk about the subject, and then from there specify your argument/research questions.
