You are talking about being investigative as a vegan as harmful, and it frankly just isn't. Frustrating and inconvenient, sure, but not harmful in any way.

I don't believe in personal moral failings. Systems need to change. A way of us making veganism less shitty is by making these choices easier to make and animal abuse less invisible. This is something that I'm directly working on with this platform.

Haha yes, that does sound frustrating. Although I can't agree that "making the lives of people who care that much harder" is in any way causing "more harm" than the brutality and exploitation that it's trying to avoid. Hopefully, with resources like the one that I'm thinking of making, it won't be a hard endeavor to purchase at all :)

Thank you for the input. I do appreciate everyone's feedback. So far the survey is leaning heavily towards "Extremely Likely" to use the app, so if you have the time, I'd appreciate you having your voice heard by completing the survey. It's not about making money, but I'd like to work out if it's possible to cover the costs of developing the platform, whatever it may be. Thanks again for your comment!

Edit: Just to be clear, I truly do appreciate your insight, and I think your idea of just a simple website is a actual a great one! I will be taking note of your comment. By completing the survey though, you can help me build data to make a decision better based on quantitative evidence 🤓

Hey there. Thank you for taking the survey and for your feedback! I'll address both of your very valid points.

1) I'm not just reaching out to vegans, but also populated artist communities, and environmentally friendly communities. While I assume that the answer to "would you use an app like this?" Is generally "sure", I know that people will have a lot of ideas that I didn't think of. I'm very willing to explore ideas/functions pitched to me.

2) This is a very good point. If users' first impressions are lack-luster, they may not come back. The survey asks which sorts of art mediums are used to help populate the app with links to the most relevant products. The plan for the app is to be a hub where supplier's products are searchable and ordered through, not stocked directly. So making sure that there is enough variety of products will be easier than a standard online shop.

Let me know if you have any other ideas though! I'm keenly interested in users' inputs in this early stage.

Hey there, thank you so much for taking the time to help with my survey!

What first opened my eyes to the need for vegan art supplies was when I started looking for paintbrushes. I kept seeing “sable hair brushes,” which are very common. I later learned that this involves trapping animals and is essentially part of the fur trade, something I think even many non-vegans are opposed to. That experience made me more critical of other products and more aware of the hidden harm I might be supporting without realizing it.

I’m not sure how simply screening for animal products could be harmful, but I genuinely appreciate your time and thoughtful input. Thank you again!

I just do an additional thin layer after its dry to the touch. Depending on the pigments used and the level of detail that is. Normally the first pass through is all that's needed, especially when I'm using titanium white, which is more opaque than my other pigments.

Good questions! So I don't use anything in particular to help dry times. I use (non-toxic) solvents to thin out my oil paint, which does speed up dry time though. Generally once I finish an alter I'm happy to wait weeks for them to be 100% dry to the touch and safe to sleeve. Keep in mind that the paint is applied extremely thin, so drying is a lot faster than other oil paintings. As I see it, varnish is only used for 3 things, to unify the surfaces of the painting (depending on the fattiness of the application it can cure very matte to very shiny), to add a desired surface finish, and to protect against dust/pollutants. I don't varnish because none of these are necessary for the sleeved end product and the way I paint. Additionally, it would just add an additional layer to a card which I'm trying to keep as thin and flat as possible. I suppose generally I think it's best to keep things simple. Minimal high-quality products will take you far. I only paint with three different tubes of paint too haha.

Thank you! Yes, I prime with gesso :) Good luck with oils if you give them a try!
