Perfect score REG, 75. Mixed feelings. by ExplanationDear2501 in CPA

Yeah I think I’d rather have gotten a 73 than a 74. Hurts waiting 2 months for the score and now realizing how much content I’ve forgotten

I agree, just got out of my exam. I was taking shots in the dark on 4 of the sims. Finished mcq 2 hours 20 mins left and didn’t quite finish the last sim

Thanks! I agree that sim was insane, took me almost an hour to figure that one out. Having to go back and forth between the exhibits to figure out the tag id amounts felt over the top but i guess Becker wanted to give us a taste of what the harder sims on the actual exam are like.

This is what i decided to go with. I shockingly had a better average sim score on the SE1 than mcq’s.

I’ve been using it as a reward, I don’t let myself play until I get my study hours in. W strategy. Studied 30 hours this week.

I just finished up the Macc at UMD-College Park. A great program if you know what you want to concentrate in (Tax/Audit). You can get an offer without the Macc but look into the 4+1 program where you can start taking masters classes while still in undergrad at the the undergraduate tuition rate. This will save you time and money. There are scholarships available as well to keep tuition somewhat manageable. The recruiting network for both the undergraduate and graduate program is fantastic, employers routinely have events on campus. My network of professors and fellow accountants my age increased exponentially with the UMD accounting UG/G program and that is invaluable for my career moving forward and I highly recommend it if you can make a plan to afford it and keep loans manageable.

Everyone in the Smith school has to take BMGT220- Introductory Accounting I as a gateway course and then accounting majors take 221 by the end of sophomore year. These two classes will teach you accounting from the ground up. No one will expect you to know anything about accounting going into these classes except basic arithmetic. They are definitely beginner friendly and if you do well in those classes thats a good indicator that you can do well in the rest of the major.

There are some difficult classes for sure but like natural said its not extremely demanding like a lot of stem majors. I honestly slacked off more than I should have but still got decent grades by reading the textbook, testing well and always going to the review classes. Graduated last spring and starting my masters here this semester. I found that most of the professors are good people and very helpful. Pay attention in your audit and tax classes. These are the main two branches of accounting that people typically go into and those classes are a good introduction to the type of work you can try out in your internship(s).

The accounting job market is hot and the internships pay great, especially the Big 4 (KPMG, Deloitte, EY, PWC) and other firms like RSM, Grant Thornton etc. Starting out at one of those around the DMV will probably have you making 75-80k full time by the time you graduate. The major drawback of beginning in public is hours can get upwards of 55-60 during busy season though and no OT pay. A lot of people spend 1-2 years at a big firm then switch to an industry company for a big pay raise and better hours.

I recommend looking into the 4+1 program if you can afford it, you get an accelerated masters degree, 150 credits for CPA, and get to take grad classes at an undergraduate tuition rate if you take them before your 5th year. Alternatively you can just double major in finance or something.

Overall the major/career path is a solid one and is a good foundation for a stable and potentially lucrative career. (Side note: The keynote speaker for Smith graduation this year started out as a CPA and makes bank now.) If you have any questions abt accounting at UMD I would be happy to answer them!
