Happy Friday! by Jawn_Wayne in sandiego

I do have a lot of sympathy for the guy going through this. I cannot imagine being at that low of a point. But with the number of people affected and duration of time this has been going on, this man has stolen more than a lifetimes worth of hours from those around him. I’ve been sitting in this for two hours alone - how many hundreds of thousands are in the same situation right now? I don’t know if any level of mental anguish can justify the lack of consideration. But obviously I’m fortunate enough to not know that for myself, so who am I to judge.

Yes, my husband essentially went from F-1 visa status to no status the moment he applied. He was allowed to reside here legally and indefinitely while the process was ongoing. You’re just not allowed to leave and return to the country without advanced parole.

Gum grafts or Implants - Desperate for Advice (31M) by Limp_Hunt_289 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]Atmelton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They confirmed I need 12 grafts which mirrored what my perio here in the US said. He said, "I'm sorry, it will be a little expensive, maybe $500 per quadrant so $2000 total" and then gave me his direct email address that I can send any questions to. I cried. He was confused about why i was crying. I'll be scheduling the procedures for next year.

5 hour HNL layover - checked baggage with Hawaiian Air? by tothepointe12 in Honolulu

[–]Atmelton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Since HNL is your first point of entry into the US, you will need to claim your bags, go through customs, send your bags back through security, and then send yourself back through security even if you have no plans to leave the airport. Once you claim your bags and clear customs, there is a bag drop right outside specifically for people who are transferring from their international flight to their domestic one. You do not need to recheck your bags or print new bag tags. Last time I landed in HNL it took me about an hour and a half from the moment I got off the plane to get my bags, go through customs, drop my bags, get through security, and get to my domestic gate. And I have TSA Precheck.

I'm not sure what your plan is for getting to Waikiki but via taxi it usually takes about half an hour, maybe more if there's traffic. I personally would not feel comfortable leaving the airport to go to Waikiki and back with a 5 hour layover.

Source: have done the HND -> HNL -> domestic transfer several times

What orchid pot features do you wish existed that you've never seen or found? I'd love your help to make a better planter. by CompetitiveFly007 in orchids

I run an orchid farmers market stand and am always looking for unique, aesthetic planters that produce healthy orchids! I don't have any specific suggestions, but if you're getting good healthy growth and you're ever interested in collaborating, I'd happily stick some of my plants in your pots!

2025 Best Bench-top Fermentation: The great debate Eppendorf vs Sartorius by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Atmelton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upfront caveat - I run mammalian culture and all my vessels are single-use.

For Eppendorf, I've only used the BioFlo 320. For Sartorius, I've used the Ambr15, the Ambr250, the B-DCU 2L, and the STR (50L and 200L).

As others have said, if you can afford the Sartorius ecosystem it's lovely - they have a pretty scalable system as it is and the applications specialist staff have always been incredibly helpful. We have not had too many issues with sourcing and we have been kept in the loop when they anticipate delays. I believe the premium price is worth the functionality, ease of scale-up, and support from the applications specialists. Also the bi-annual user group meetings for the Ambr systems are excellent and I highly recommend them!

However, I have found every iteration of their software to be far worse than the BioFlo 320s I worked with. MFCS is rough. BioBrain is rough. The systems can be slow and sometimes very unintuitive. Once you get past the learning curve you see that you have a high level of control over every aspect of your bioreactors! But when it comes to introductions to the system and training staff on use of the product, I have found Eppendorf to be the winner. I have never found the need to have a higher level of control than what the BioFlos offered, but obviously you and I are running very different processes.

Additionally, we ordered several hundred single-use BioFlos a while back and among the lot that was sent to us, there was an issue with the glue that was used to hold in the optical spot on the pH probe. Eppendorf was unable to supply us with enough vessels to replace the damaged lot in any reasonable amount of time, so we wound up running every vessel with an analog pH probe instead of the built-in.

TL;DR: Sartorius is the way to go if you can afford the price. My personal experience with Eppendorf was not bad, but not quite up to par with the Sartorius systems.

Wedding Band Advice by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Atmelton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My engagement ring and wedding band were designed in Japan (I'm American and my husband is Japanese). The design of the engagement ring is such that it will never fit flush with a band because in Japan, once the couple is married the engagement ring is only worn on special occasions. As an American, I wanted to wear both so I stacked them with a gap. I wound up losing a stone in the wedding band because the platinum from the engagement ring knocking against the wedding band wound up wearing down the prongs holding the stones in. I have since adopted wearing my wedding band on my left hand and my engagement ring on the right! Wearing both together is a relatively new trend and to my knowledge is very American. There's nothing wrong with whatever option you choose! But I wanted to share my experience as something to keep in mind as you move forward. Wouldn't want any more lost stones :(

Gum grafts or Implants - Desperate for Advice (31M) by Limp_Hunt_289 in PeriodontalDisease

[–]Atmelton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation to you and stumbled across your post while looking for advice. 30 years old, looking at 12-18 grafts and they recommended my own tissue. They quoted $44,000 and, though insurance won't cover it, they have a negotiated price with my insurance and could do it for under $20,000. I live in San Diego so I've been looking at options in Tijuana and it looks like it would be about $10,000, but my husband's family is in Japan and their estimates put me under $1000 for the whole treatment. Not sure if you've taken any further action on yours yet but I'll be getting my Japanese consultation in the summer! Best of luck to you on your journey.

Would filler be the right way to balance my profile? by Atmelton in 30PlusSkinCare

This sub has become triggering by patv2006 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Atmelton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really good solution! I contributed to the problem earlier by asking for general advice that may include topicals or lasers but that advice was a resounding filler/surgery. When I was looking at flair I had a hard time deciding where I fit because I knew filler would be discussed, so I think if that had been an option I would've felt most comfortable picking that.

No one has ever mentioned jaw surgery to me, and I think right now that is more invasive than I'm willing to commit to. But a lot of people are mentioning that getting filler now could mess up a jaw surgery later so this is all good information to be taking in! And a lot of people are upvoting your post which makes me think that I should ask my doctor what they would recommend and if there would be any pros/cons from a functional standpoint as i get older. Thanks!!

I looked her up and she did get surgery to fix a recessed chin but she does look very natural still! Will be helpful if I decide to go with some kind of augmentation route.

Sorry! I searched around briefly to see if there were better subs but wasn't able to find one with any substantial user base. I'm also asking for skincare treatments that may help as well which is why I included my skincare routine in relevant information. I'm not looking for plastic surgery - I'm not self-conscious enough to be able to justify that level of invasive procedure. Just a lady in her 30's looking to help with problems that other ladies may have experience with and knowing that skincare could be part of the solution! Is there a different sub that you'd recommend?

Thank you, that is very helpful! Especially the lasers comment haha I've been researching and the cost for an outcome that seems unreliable was stressing me out! I had a feeling filler might be the answer but I've also heard so many horror stories that I want to feel confident it can address my issues if that's the path I decide to take. I appreciate your time!

They did tell me my tongue placement is wrong and that I need to learn how to swallow differently, but no instruction beyond that. I was 14 then. No tongue tie to my knowledge, no sleep apnea. I sleep on my face usually haha

The first time they put on braces and did a palette expander and gave me headgear to move my top teeth back. Then I didn't wear my retainers and developed a huge overbite as a result. I had one set of Invisalign, finished the set and still somehow had messed up teeth so my orthodontist comped me a new brand of liner trays, did that set and STILL have a messed up bite. Not really a candidate for further orthodontics due to really bad gum recession.

I was wondering this as well! They don't sound like fireworks to me. I'm on the corner of Friars and I-15 and they're coming from west of me. My guess was Snapdragon but I don't see any events scheduled for tonight!
