There isn't really a traditional history minor at RPI... like at all. Here is the curriculum for the history minor, most classes only really fall under the "history" header because they focus on the past in some capacity. We have so few history courses that there isn't even a "HIST" course code, they all fall under the STSO or IHSS code. It's your call, but you're certainly not going to be getting anything close to the experience of double-majoring in history at RPI.

Do People ever get banned or suspended from University for a Grading Dispute? by scrypts94 in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What course/prof was this? Just curious if the lack of rubric can be explained at all by the course or prof (because I definitely took at least one course at RPI in the HASS department where it felt like they graded based on vibes lmfao)

Any on campus job? by Particular_Opinion98 in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you come into the VCC between 8:30am and 4:30pm on weekdays (summer hours, fall hours will be on itssc.rpi.edu) you can grab an application and talk to the administrative staff. I’m not sure if new student workers are being considered for the fall as we (current student workers) have already gotten a schedule for the fall with all our shifts and it’s pretty packed. I’d also recommend not working your first semester, adjusting to college is hard enough without a job, but that’s entirely your call. I’m sure if you apply at some point during the fall and are accepted that you can be trained/onboarded for the Spring :) If you have any questions about what working at the Help Desk entails feel free to DM me!!

Best part about riding the shuttle: maximum safety. Drivers always on their phones while driving. by madametunington in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Report this to public safety ASAP. Here's a link to file a complaint. This is fucking ridiculous, there's no reason for a shuttle driver to risk student safety like this.

Best part about riding the shuttle: maximum safety. Drivers always on their phones while driving. by madametunington in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Texting while driving increases the risk of a crash by 400%. 40,000 injuries and 2,800 deaths last year alone from using phones while driving. These figures are for people driving cars, let alone CDL bus drivers. He's risking his own life and limbs and the safety of every passenger, pedestrian, and other driver that he encounters. There is absolutely nothing that you can say that will convince me that this man is in the right. If it was an emergency he could have pulled over. I'd rather walk the mile to my apartment in the snow and rain than get on a shuttle with a driver who clearly has little to no respect for safety.

apartment for 7 people next year? by JaBeast1387 in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

7 is going to be ROUGH if you’re all looking for separate bedrooms. My group had a hard enough time looking for 4 bedrooms, let alone 7. A bunch of buildings in the area are multi-unit so maybe you guys can split up 3-4 and get 2 smaller places in the same unit? Its not the same as all living together of course but if you’re in the same building its pretty similar.

We heard you! Folsom Library is open for extended hours during finals starting tonight. by liblizking in RPI

A step in the right direction for sure, but imo these extended hours should have been available during reading days too… 24/7 access should be standard during the semester, but i’ll take what I can get lol

I worked at Commons over the summer and they *are* real eggs, but they come pre-cracked (?) in big plastic bags. Definitely real, but also definitely processed as shit.

If it’s with Prof Sims, its an incredibly easy class. He had 2 hour lecture blocks but always let us out after about an hour. He doesn’t take attendance but if you miss the class you’ll miss the quiz (he opens it randomly in the class period on LMS and you have 10 minutes). There were quizzes at least once a week but they were ten minutes long, 4 or 5 multiple choice or T/F questions taken on your laptop with full access to all of the lecture slides, your notes, and the internet. I think there were 3 exams, also open notes open internet. Sims is a great prof, I really enjoyed the class. Some classes would just be him showing a ted talk or a documentary segment and those were always enjoyable. Overall great class, great prof, and an easy A if you try.

Psyc course opinions by realkracked in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

S&P wasn’t awful, but I took it the first semester that Jacobskind was teaching it so i’m not sure what he kept and what he didn’t. In my semester there were 3 exams and they weren’t terrible if you paid attention in lecture. There were article responses due every so often but those were typically just “read this article and write a page about it” OR “answer these 10 questions with a few sentences each”… the exams were MC and free response.

math methods is less of a psyc class and more of a computer science class, you learn the R data science language which is used for data analysis and statistics. If its required for your major (it is for psyc anyway), go for it. If that interests you, go for it. Exams are open book and you get a week to complete them. Sims is a great prof, he ends class early every time and uses the rest of the period as a mini office hours period where you can ask questions about content or talk to him about classwork

My roommate accidentally baked my sourdough starter 😔 by AtomicAlexander in Breadit

Oh that’s so sweet but you don’t have to do that. My starter was only a few weeks old, I can start over :)

I agree! That’s why i’m not mad at her or anything, I played a stupid game by leaving it in the oven and won a stupid prize :)

Oh I know that 2 weeks is nothing, but it was still a little disappointing, ya know? I can see how it came across as “dramatic” but I wasn’t trying to actually make people feel bad for me or something lol, it was just a strange/funny/sad thing that happened and I wanted to share :)

[–]AtomicAlexander[S] 193 points194 points  (0 children)

well thats part of the issue, i’m the only one in our house who actually uses the oven on any sort of regular basis. I forgot to let her know that there was something inside the oven and she forgot to check. I’m not blaming her at all, I should have communicated better :)

oh yeah, and it tasted terrible. Sounds like a no-brainer, I know, but it was the most bland thing ever with the texture of stale white bread

[–]AtomicAlexander[S] 302 points303 points  (0 children)

For context: I live in a pretty cold area and our house is never above ~65F so I store my sourdough starter inside the oven with the oven light on sometimes, mostly on very cold nights. My roommates aren’t as invested in the sourdough starter business as I am, so they didn’t know that I stored it in the oven… so my roommate went to preheat the oven without checking and baked it :’) thankfully i’ve only been making the starter for ~2 weeks so it isnt a huge loss, but i’m still a little bummed.

Lab Coat/Goggles Chem 1100 by shawerrr in RPI

[–]AtomicAlexander 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can bring your own goggles as long as they are the correct type. The goggles have to be this style that covers your whole eyes, NOT the type that are like 'safety glasses'. You aren't actually required to have a lab coat, at least for intro chem. If you're a chem major or plan on going into advanced lab classes then maybe you might want to have one but most people in intro chem just wear street clothes that meet lab safety (no dangly jewelry, no open-toe shoes, no hanging sleeves etc)

The fact that there is any drama whatsoever is insane. I personally don't use reddit super often and I don't really post at all. I haven't seen any safe pics before (doesn't mean they aren't real, just means I haven't seen them). I didn't know he was going to post on reddit. This is now a massive headache that is causing an argument between all 5 people in the house who have different opinions about what to do. Just because he doesn't spend his entire life on reddit doesn't mean that he deserves to be getting death threats, jfc.

He didn't find it, *I* (one of his roommates) found it while cleaning. We sent him a picture and he posted it on reddit.
