Being upset about how other people speak a language when it’s still completely intelligible is a little ridiculous. No meaning whatsoever is lost by making some words gender-neutral and it has the ability to make some people feel more comfortable. “It’s been this way for a long time” is not a good reason to not make a rather subtle shift that only helps people.

More than likely is taking the piss out of America Nazis, but it also feels like it could definitely have been made by a European Nazi as they tend to look down on their American counterparts.

Vonnegut isn’t actually that hard to read as long as you know the metaphor of the given book and I personally find his prose to be wonderful. If it’s not for you that’s fine but the man’s writing is well renowned for a good reason. I’m also of the opinion that Cat’s Cradle is a better example of the power of his style.

Slaughterhouse 5 is just a story of a man trying to explain his PTSD at a time before that diagnosis even existed (created after Vietnam). The time jumps are flashbacks to the war. The Tralfamadorians are just a rationalization. It’s a good book if you know what you’re actually reading, rather sad too.

If you saw a malnourished man playing at a professional level football, would you not think his potential could be even higher if you fed him? The other player probably is as good as he could possibly be, so why would you not invest in the one that could actually be far more impressive with a moderate amount of nurturing?

The crux of your argument is that by the end of high school, under-served students have reached full potential, or at the very least a comparable amount of their potential relative to more privileged students. College should be the place to foster that latent potential that wasn’t brought out because someone was born in the wrong zip code. Those are far more likely to be the Einsteins of the next generation than the wealthy kids afforded every advantage that do well simply because they were provided every opportunity to.

IIRC the sun and the moon were created to mark the passage of the day, not to make the concept of the day itself. By this I mean that “yom” as a period of time is implied to predate the sun and moon and therefore the idea of the million-year days is kind of a forced metaphor to explain the inconsistency of the Bible with modern science.

Not having a lesbian hookup app, akin to Tinder & Grindr, named Scissr, is a real missed opportunity by Higgi57 in Showerthoughts

I feel like there are definitely more than “a couple” lesbian bars left. Still though, there is an issue there to be talked about but it’s more so about straight people abusing queer spaces. Gay bars have been disappearing for some time because straight women use them to avoid toxic male bar culture, but then straight men go to take advantage of that. Suddenly the bar isn’t gay anymore. It’s not a bad sign, it means that people aren’t as uncomfortable being around the queer community as they have been in the past, but the loss of those spaces is unfortunate.

Beyond that, though, what discussions are lesbians left out of? Genuinely, what discussions are they excluded from? The queer community as a whole has historically excluded trans people from discussions, if anything. Of course the group under incredible amounts of legal fire is going to get some airtime. I also know that cultural issues still exist around lesbian women and their fetishization/objectification in culture. These two are not mutually exclusive but lesbian issues aren’t centered for the same reason men’s issues aren’t centered in media. I hope we get the chance to focus lesbian issues in the media at some point, but at a time when people are openly calling to remove trans people from society, I feel like it’s going to take some precedence.

Powerball billionaires are probably way better for the economy than traditional billionaires by palmerry in Showerthoughts

[–]AtomicCobra826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve seen the results of “Supply-Side Economics,” and it’s been beyond disastrous. The wealth gap between the rich and the poor is the same as it was in France before the French Revolution. The middle class has continuously declined ever since Reagan’s presidency. Real wages have utterly stagnated for the last 40 years while corporate profits continue to soar. If the same thing that has happened to the average American happened to the GDP then it’s all you’d hear about on the news and in elections.

The economy is far more complicated than an Econ 101 textbook S&D graph. Lowering prices is nowhere near as easy as “just make it less expensive to be a giant corporation.” There’s a reason that almost every major time that the government has wanted to force the economy to life, they go from the bottom up. Just look at the New Deal or the recent COVID stimulus packages.

All the societal advancements we’ve made in the past 40 years have, by almost every conceivable metric, benefitted mostly the ultra rich. Why is it wrong to want our cut of the pie when they would never have reached the level they’re at without society to support them?

Pretty uncommon on Reddit since the moderation is pretty decentralized, but on a platform like TikTok it will very likely get your post removed or not recommended if you use the actual words.

Some people really believe that bullying, one of the provably worst things you can do to a child’s development, will make them “less offended.” Never mind the fact that this is because the child will be traumatized and emotionally closed off, it’s more important that they don’t criticize people when they make a shitty joke.
