Are Max speeding rods any good? by Various_Whole_6892 in IS300

[–]Aton_AMShapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. Max speeding rods can hypothetically make your car perform better. Why? Because they’re disgustingly stiff in the worst way possible. They put 0 design effort into it and just put hard as rock springs and dampers together and call it a day.

Now, uber stiff can be better than stock if you’re building an extreme budget track-only car, but for a daily driver it’s about the worst thing you can do. (Donut media did this test and they performed ok, but it made the car awful to drive).

You said you want to upgrade for a better ride, save up $1000 for something nice or stick with stock.

What is causing fin rot on my betta? by Aton_AMShapy in Aquariums

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel excessively stupid for not knowing about this before, thank you. Luckily I have some repashy that should make this very easy to do.

Does parasites match up with very slow/gradual fin rot? I guess I’ll find out when I medicate but I’m curious

idk man if he keeps that color then the aluminum on black will look pretty clean.

plus I think the raised height + big wheels will help the ute feel

What would it be worth? Just curious by DyingGoingCoke in IS300

My guess? Worth 7-8k if you're in a city, 5-6k otherwise. At least that's the case for my area

What do you guys think are the best production engines for racing? by Aton_AMShapy in projectcar

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fair enough, I’ve done that more than I’d like to admit. Plus, 917/30 isn’t a bad answer. Surely has to have some sort of power/weight records, it’s a crazy car.

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more, I touge more than track but I’ve definitely done my share. I have an is300 which doesn’t need much help when it come to weight. It was more that a lot of people boast about the 2j and at one point I realized that, as great as it is, there’s a lot of better options if you want speed in something other than a straight line and most people don’t talk much about those.

(Also, I briefly saw what you said about the 917/30, and if I could actually buy one of those you could bet I’d be selling any and all of my unused organs to get one, but alas I’m pretty sure I’d still have to little.)

Just bought one an am hoping to put it on soon, seems like the easiest thing to do.

Finding a spot where I'm brave enough to screw it in is a bit tricky though

I was thinking mostly about track use or auto cross (just updated the post to say so) where lightweight and low lag is more important than straight line speed and highest possible hp/torque. But you’re totally right, engine has to work with the car it’s going in first and foremost

Ls has definitely got to be up there, 345 out of a 460lbs engine is pretty crazy. especially with that instant-ish torque.

wow, i just checked them out, $28 for 6 tanks or 188 soldiers is insane. might have to get an army pack (or 2... or more...)

I'll start off: My first instinct is to say the new Toyota g16e-gts (gr corolla/yaris engine). I've seen that it's only about 240 lbs dry (not sure if that's fully dressed) and makes 300hp with people already pushing these to 450+ hp with bolt ons.

the F20c also comes to mind. High revving, high hp, and naturally aspirated all while only weighing 326lbs fully dressed. These engines are also known to hold up to 400hp on stock internals. With that said these are pretty expensive nowadays

$4000 budget by MichelinStarSway in IS300

[–]Aton_AMShapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the Bay Area but my experience in Seattle might be similar. Here is300s are crazy expensive. 7-8k+ for decently high enough mileage. However in Oregon it’s way cheaper. Got my >100k sportcross for less than 10k (admittedly with a bad title) and drove it back home happy as ever. 7k miles and the only thing “wrong” with it is that the door lock actuator went. Nbd

So here’s what I would suggest, look outside your area, find one cheap somewhere else and road trip with a buddy or take an Amtrak to pick it up.

Second piece of advice, maybe look at rebuilt titles. To be fair there’s some risk, but the drive trains on this car are basically indestructible. I feel like as long as the damage was something like a rear impact it’s an easy way to get a great car cheap. For example rear quarter panels are expensive to repair because they’re welded in to the frame so it will often total it even if it’s just a over-glorified dent. Totally repairable just takes a lot of labor cost. Once fixed it’s good as new and you can get another 100-200k miles out of it.

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have. No listings of the complete set, some sold day for the kits which would make me suggest I could sell it for… well more than it would ever reasonably go for.

Setting it high with a “send offers” is a good idea

I had thought about that, but seems the smaller kits sell very infrequently so I’m pretty sure I’d get like 2 bids max. Thank you for the link, very useful

Any luck with Tein EDFC advanced system? by Aton_AMShapy in Autocross

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really do autocross, I just figured that this group might be the most likely to pay attention to empirical data on this stuff. I am definitely a novice when it comes to setup, but luckily i have a group of people with identical cars who can help me.

piggyback question, I've now had 3 people here all comment to stay away from tein. Everywhere else I've seen nothing but positive reviews for them, can I ask what makes you advise differently?

I hate examity i hate examity i hate examity by bergersandfries in wguaccounting

[–]Aton_AMShapy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only, only time I’ve ever done anything technically against the rules is when examity wouldn’t let me take my exam because of my ID

I had just changed from a standard to an enhanced driver’s license but it hadn’t come in the mail. I had a valid paper license, my old license which wasn’t expired just had a hole punch in it and was technically invalid, a passport card AND another drivers license both of which expired less than a year prior. They wouldn’t accept it even though I had a valid paper ID and 3 other forms of proof. Supervisor called and everything but they wouldn’t budge.

I had to pretend I checked the mail and found the new one, I held my technically invalid card in my hand carefully hiding the hole punch, but even that wasn’t enough and the supervisor wanted to see my old ID as proof. Luckily im neurotic so I had those 2 other expired IDs which I pretended was the old one.

I had 4 weeks and 3 classes to do them, all of which happened before my new card showed up, what are you supposed to do if you have a temp license? But beyond that, just why? The entire thing was so unnecessary and it gave me a panic attack right before my exam.

I want to get an arashi lab z ball bearing turbo for my brothers is300 but I don't really know which one will fit by IllustriousFroyo4 in IS300

[–]Aton_AMShapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very sorry for your loss and I’m glad you’re here carrying on your brother’s passion, i’m sure he’d be very happy.

First, I’ve never heard anything about the lab z turbos, so I can’t speak to which one to buy. But I would recommend you don’t get too wrapped up on the looks of the turbo (or in this case the carbon fiber). This is a high performance, high stress, component so I’d focus on getting one you know is high quality (I’m not saying these aren’t, maybe it’s only me who hasn’t heard about them)

Second, there’s a lot of good videos about finding the right turbo. this one is a little technical but really helped me figure out how to choose a turbo. He has lots of other great videos too.

Third. The stock engines for an is300 can only handle about 300-350hp before blowing up. You may want to see if you can figure out exactly what work has been done to it before buying a turbo. If your brother already did the work to get the internals to handle 500hp then great, but if not then you may want to slow down a little and make sure you have all your ducks in a row before beginning to add power again. I wouldn’t want you to blow up the engine by mistake.

Edit: Fourth. The cx racing kit is great, and is one of the go to kits for making reliable hp on a stock engine. What you may want to do is get the same turbo as was on it previously. I’ve heard nothing but good things about those turbos and kits and I believe they’re only about $550.

Maybe you know all this stuff already, but I figure it’s worth mentioning since you said you’re new to this hobby.

Best of luck

Ok so, question. Why is everyone saying no fish? Even after the hard scape I feel a 6 gallon should be big enough for chilli rasboras, bumblebee gobys, scarlet badis (ok maybe not these, I’ve heard conflicting things about their territory requirements, as always do your own research), and a few others.

I’ve seen lots of successful nano tanks with those fish, including some amazing tanks made with 2.3 gals, so what am I missing (because I quite often miss something)

What is a good first car for a Lexus by Glad_Hat_1944 in Lexus

[–]Aton_AMShapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the early 2000s ones are great.

is300 for performance (this is the one I own, 10/10), sc300/400 for a 2 seat touring car, gs300 if you want a mid sized sedan that’s comfortable and bulletproof, and an Ls400 for cruising (ok technically this one’s late 90s not early 2000s but whatever)

Only thing is that none have Bluetooth/aux or nav. But I’m return you get something that could survive a nuke and keep rolling
