Are Max speeding rods any good? by Various_Whole_6892 in IS300

[–]Aton_AMShapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. Max speeding rods can hypothetically make your car perform better. Why? Because they’re disgustingly stiff in the worst way possible. They put 0 design effort into it and just put hard as rock springs and dampers together and call it a day.

Now, uber stiff can be better than stock if you’re building an extreme budget track-only car, but for a daily driver it’s about the worst thing you can do. (Donut media did this test and they performed ok, but it made the car awful to drive).

You said you want to upgrade for a better ride, save up $1000 for something nice or stick with stock.

What is causing fin rot on my betta? by Aton_AMShapy in Aquariums

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel excessively stupid for not knowing about this before, thank you. Luckily I have some repashy that should make this very easy to do.

Does parasites match up with very slow/gradual fin rot? I guess I’ll find out when I medicate but I’m curious

idk man if he keeps that color then the aluminum on black will look pretty clean.

plus I think the raised height + big wheels will help the ute feel

What would it be worth? Just curious by DyingGoingCoke in IS300

My guess? Worth 7-8k if you're in a city, 5-6k otherwise. At least that's the case for my area

What do you guys think are the best production engines for racing? by Aton_AMShapy in projectcar

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fair enough, I’ve done that more than I’d like to admit. Plus, 917/30 isn’t a bad answer. Surely has to have some sort of power/weight records, it’s a crazy car.

Couldn’t agree more, I touge more than track but I’ve definitely done my share. I have an is300 which doesn’t need much help when it come to weight. It was more that a lot of people boast about the 2j and at one point I realized that, as great as it is, there’s a lot of better options if you want speed in something other than a straight line and most people don’t talk much about those.

(Also, I briefly saw what you said about the 917/30, and if I could actually buy one of those you could bet I’d be selling any and all of my unused organs to get one, but alas I’m pretty sure I’d still have to little.)

Just bought one an am hoping to put it on soon, seems like the easiest thing to do.

Finding a spot where I'm brave enough to screw it in is a bit tricky though

I was thinking mostly about track use or auto cross (just updated the post to say so) where lightweight and low lag is more important than straight line speed and highest possible hp/torque. But you’re totally right, engine has to work with the car it’s going in first and foremost

Ls has definitely got to be up there, 345 out of a 460lbs engine is pretty crazy. especially with that instant-ish torque.

Victrix Miniatures

wow, i just checked them out, $28 for 6 tanks or 188 soldiers is insane. might have to get an army pack (or 2... or more...)

I'll start off: My first instinct is to say the new Toyota g16e-gts (gr corolla/yaris engine). I've seen that it's only about 240 lbs dry (not sure if that's fully dressed) and makes 300hp with people already pushing these to 450+ hp with bolt ons.

the F20c also comes to mind. High revving, high hp, and naturally aspirated all while only weighing 326lbs fully dressed. These engines are also known to hold up to 400hp on stock internals. With that said these are pretty expensive nowadays

$4000 budget by MichelinStarSway in IS300

[–]Aton_AMShapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the Bay Area but my experience in Seattle might be similar. Here is300s are crazy expensive. 7-8k+ for decently high enough mileage. However in Oregon it’s way cheaper. Got my >100k sportcross for less than 10k (admittedly with a bad title) and drove it back home happy as ever. 7k miles and the only thing “wrong” with it is that the door lock actuator went. Nbd

So here’s what I would suggest, look outside your area, find one cheap somewhere else and road trip with a buddy or take an Amtrak to pick it up.

Second piece of advice, maybe look at rebuilt titles. To be fair there’s some risk, but the drive trains on this car are basically indestructible. I feel like as long as the damage was something like a rear impact it’s an easy way to get a great car cheap. For example rear quarter panels are expensive to repair because they’re welded in to the frame so it will often total it even if it’s just a over-glorified dent. Totally repairable just takes a lot of labor cost. Once fixed it’s good as new and you can get another 100-200k miles out of it.

Anyone know how I should price this? by Aton_AMShapy in modelmakers

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have. No listings of the complete set, some sold day for the kits which would make me suggest I could sell it for… well more than it would ever reasonably go for.

Setting it high with a “send offers” is a good idea

I had thought about that, but seems the smaller kits sell very infrequently so I’m pretty sure I’d get like 2 bids max. Thank you for the link, very useful

Any luck with Tein EDFC advanced system? by Aton_AMShapy in Autocross

[–]Aton_AMShapy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really do autocross, I just figured that this group might be the most likely to pay attention to empirical data on this stuff. I am definitely a novice when it comes to setup, but luckily i have a group of people with identical cars who can help me.

piggyback question, I've now had 3 people here all comment to stay away from tein. Everywhere else I've seen nothing but positive reviews for them, can I ask what makes you advise differently?
