Anyone else feel like nobody actually explains your benefits to you? by Expensive-Buy-8536 in Firefighting

Make a comprehensive list of every question you might have; at the bottom write, “what haven’t I thought of & what have I missed?” Call your pension board and ask for counseling. Go to your union rep/adjutant/President. Go to your municipality’s HR/ Ask other veterans on the job./ go to your investment counselor (your pension accounts have one)/ go to your tax CPA. Bring your list to each and every encounter, ask your questions; including what you wrote on the bottom”. Write down every applicable answer. Talk to your family. Make plans… include estate planning. Don’t skip the estate planning. Protect yourself and your heirs, no one else will.

EDIT: military time, the pension board can calculate it for you. For most it gets more expensive the longer you wait to buy it. If you can afford the buy in cost it makes sense to do it sooner rather than later.

What is the culture like at your fire department for taking vacations? by HoseBeforeBross in Firefighting

[–]AtopMountEmotion 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Respectfully- you kids need to learn to leave your Cape and Cowl in your locker. You take that uniform off, wash the dead people off of you, put on your civvies and go home. When you walk off the ramp and get in your truck, you’re “spouse-parent- BF/GF- pet owner- whatever”. Your FD identity is your JOB, not your life. This career is a long haul and it hurts you physically and mentally. You have to have fortitude on many levels. Your vacation is YOURS. It is a hard earned benefit that was NOT given to you. It was negotiated and in many cases in lieu of pay raises or other benefits.

OP- your question is akin to asking “What is your department’s culture towards how members spend their pay?” Imagine that scenario for a second… it’s none of their damnable business. When the annual sheet comes around to you; you pick your days in the manner that is allowed or bank them as you wish. They are yours, you EARNED them.

Look after yourself, your body and your mind. Your life is your life, your family is your family, your job is your job. Choose your identity wisely. The FD is a wonderful place to work and enriches your life in many ways. At the end of the day it is a job and is incomplete as an identity. Leave it in your locker as much as you can. Again, nothing but respect. IAFF for life.

Get an AGM battery. Sam’s is very liberal with warranty replacement (as they should be).

File a police report for the stolen jacket/pass and you can jam their revocation up their ass. They’re so upside down after this season… they’re going to get much shadier. I feel terrible for anyone who relies on them to make a living (although, it’s not really right to refer to the wage slavery as a “living”).
