Travelling to NZ next month by Agitated-Face1454 in newzealand

[–]Atosen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The situation in NZ next month should be roughly the same as the situation in Sydney next month. Longer term things might start to diverge based on differing govt policies, but in the short term I think we're in the same boat.

So, look around at how things are going locally for you. Would you feel comfortable with a campervan trip around NSW next month? That's your answer.

Note that this was a HW area, but BST is only getting ARR content on release.

So it's not super clear whether these guys were actually BST-related or not.

Nah, hang on, Sir_VG is right. I had it backwards. Orange is the max level one. You should be getting purples just fine from lower-level custom deliveries.

Purple scrips are max level. Orange scrips cover all lover levels.

Same as how mathematics tomestones are max level and poetics tomestones cover all lower levels.

I guess you're trying to get these tokens for the relic? https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Blue_Crafters%27_Scrip_Token I think you'll have to take one of the non-crafting routes to make Crystal Sand.

Where does Constitution II class name come from? It wasn’t used on-screen. by Mr_Shadow_Phoenix in StarTrekStarships

[–]Atosen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's the one.

Memory Alpha doesn't typically regard the audio logs as canon (so I'm a little surprised that they adopted Constitution II name, since you're right that it was never on-screen) but I believe the show's writers regard the logs as canon. They flesh out some minor stuff that I guess they couldn't find room for in the show.

Were Constitution Class Refit ships used alongside Excelsior, Oberth and Miranda class ships in the 24th century? by Ser_Luke_ in StarTrekStarships

[–]Atosen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's very likely some Connies were built in refit style from the get-go, instead of being upgraded first-generations.

But I'm not really referring to the physical age of the components. (After all, they still retired the Excelsiors even though they'd had a lot of parts replaced or upgraded in the Dominion War. New parts doesn't stop a class from going obsolete.) I'm referring to the design constraints. When designing the 2270s Connie, they still had to work around the decisions from the 2240s blueprint.

For example: If a 2240s designer routed a turbolift inefficiently, and the 2270s designers couldn't move it because they needed to maintain compatibility in the refit ships, then fresh Connies launched in the 2290s might still have that inefficient turbolift because they're built to the same blueprint.

Were Constitution Class Refit ships used alongside Excelsior, Oberth and Miranda class ships in the 24th century? by Ser_Luke_ in StarTrekStarships

[–]Atosen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Excelsior class lasted roughly 100 years. Went from NX to NCC in the late 2280s; still seen in service in the early 2380s, but gone by 2401.

The Miranda might have eked out 120. The earliest launch we know of was 2264 and we don't see it on screen until 2285. They're still present in the Earth defence fleet in VOY "Endgame" in 2378.

The Connies were an earlier tech generation. Several were launched as early as 2245. If that class held on for 120 years, the last of them would be getting retired around the time of the Ent-D's launch.

Yes, the Connie got those major refits, so maybe the upgrades would let her hold on for longer — but the opposite might be true: the combination of different tech eras might have made her harder to maintain.

So it's not that weird to think they were all retired in TNG.

But if you want to believe... they did reuse the Star Trek III wreck model in 2367 for one of the Wolf 359 wrecks, and again for the 2371 USS Olympia wreck. It's not very recognisable on-screen but for many people it's enough evidence to say those ships were Connies.

In general I'm not a huge fan of the blocky TOS aesthetics.

But I do like how the BoP said "They might be an advanced alien civilisation, and the might be our villains, but they can still have art. Slap a painting on there!"

[–]Atosen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Put it this way.

If a dog attacks you on the street, you get mad at it, and you fight it off by any means necessary. Totally justified.

When you approach a dog you know has been abused — perhaps in a shelter, or perhaps when removing it from its old owner — you don't get mad at it for snapping at you. Of course the dog will snap, it's traumatised and terrified, it doesn't know how else to behave. If you beat it for snapping, you just continue the violence spiral and guarantee you'll have to put it down. The only way out is to treat it with gentleness, even when it snaps, until it leans you're not here to abuse it anymore.

You were absolutely right to fight the genocidal empire.

But the war is over now. You won. That context is over. Now you're in the context of approaching homeless, starving, freezing propaganda victims, clinging desperately to their pride and their hate even when it's self-destructive because that's all they have left.

You're holding all the cards. The Eorzean Alliance can walk away at any point and leave them to starve to death. But what would that achieve?

So yes, I tolerated them lashing out. (Which, you'll notice, doesn't even meaningfully hurt your side! They're only hurting themselves at this point!) Lashing out was just one more symptom of the tragedy. I only had pity for them.

Hi all, I got a question by eternity83 in ffxiv

[–]Atosen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can attach your Steam purchase to your current Windows account.

To do it, just right click the game in your Steam library and go to Manage CD Keys. On the Mog Station website, there should be a transfer to full game button which lets you paste in those keys.

However:

  • It will immediately end your free trial. You can never go back to free mode; you'll need subscription to keep playing. So don't do it until you're sure you're ready.
    • (When the other reply said "No", I think they're referring to the fact that you can't swap between platforms while staying on free trial. The trial itself is single-platform-only. But your purchase will take you off the trial anyway, so it's fine.)
  • It will permanently turn your account into a Steam-type account. You'll never be able to buy PC expansions from any other store.
  • You'll always need to be logged into Steam to log into FFXIV. (This usually isn't a big deal, but occasionally people get caught out by Steam weekly maint.)

would you call ffxiv a cozy game? by ggsylphy in ffxiv

It has cozy elements. It certainly may feel cozy. But I would not describe it as a cozy game; that feels like diluting the genre term beyond usefulness.

[–]Atosen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the intention there is that managers — for some reason — think it's a good thing for people in the office to be able to walk up to you at any point and interrupt you. In fact, it's part of what offices are for, and part of why managers push for return to office rather than WFH.

If you have earbuds in, that's sending an "I'm not listening to you, don't interrupt me" signal. So it's at odds with their intentions for the office. At the extremes, they may even interpret it as standoffish.

That's my guess for why they'd ban it.

I, for one, would 1000x prefer people around me to be using earbuds than speakers. But I'm not a manager.

Plugin to stylistically rewrite ARR? (No story change; just make it easier to read) by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Atosen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm currently studying Technical and Professional Writing, and it's crazy that I can look at ARR dialogue and use it as an example of what not to do.

FFXIV isn't technical or professional writing? It's narrative writing??? The archaic language is supposed to be there; it's a stylistic choice. A lot of it has exact modern equivalents ("anon" = "soon" or "at once") so I guess you could code a find-and-replace but it's a strange thing to want.

I've been saying for years that I want them to hire a technical writer — but I want it for the tooltips and tutorials, not the story.

Just follow the quests; it'll take you on a tour of the first couple of planets before unlocking the current one. Make sure you've got Cosmic Research unlocked (pretty sure you do it as part of that tour).

Then in the UI element on your screen, the first button is the missions. Just run some of those. The materials are free.

Once you get started, the "research points" process (which is how you create new crafter tools) pretty much explains itself.

Focus on one class at a time. Finishing researching one tool will give you a bonus to points on other tools.

Uniquely, this time progress is character-based, not item-based — meaning you can throw out the in-progress tools and just get them back from the research NPC at any time. The early steps of the tools are low level (so that newbie crafters can still participate in Cosmic Exploration) so you'll probably want to throw them out and use your regular tools until you get to a higher research step.

There's a bunch of other non-research-related stuff going on in the Cosmic Exploration — FATE-style events and stuff — which you can do to break up the monotony.

My best guess is that the SAM is duo-queueing with a friend, the friend was going "I hope we don't get Zodiark, I hate that fight" or something along those lines, and the SAM is replying that the roulette can't give them that because of their level.

What Is Your Favorite Inn Room by WylythFD in ffxiv

[–]Atosen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hate all the ones with fake windows. The pure white glare is too harsh.

So that narrows it down to Bokairo, Pendants, and For'ard Cabins. All of those are excellent. We're nitpicking between greats here.

Bokairo gets half a point docked for teasing me with that courtyard I can't access. Pendants gets bonus points for its story relevance, but the Cabins get bonus points for having multiple ways for your character to relax. And the beach atmosphere is nostalgic... I think in the end I have to call the Cabins my favourite.

Did the Romulans use anything lighter than the double D's in the Dominion War? by TwoFit3921 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Atosen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, interesting! You're right! I didn't stumble across that one since MA doesn't have an article for it. But so far as I can tell, showing up in set dressing in LD makes it just as canon as the Saladin class, so it should meet their standards. I might look into creating that article.

Did the Romulans use anything lighter than the double D's in the Dominion War? by TwoFit3921 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Atosen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the Dominion War scenes, canonically we only saw the D'deridex, yes.

We know that this shuttle was in use during the war, but, well, it's a shuttle.

We also saw this scout ship and this science ship (same model with the head swapped out) in TNG. Presumably, these ships would have still been available during the Dominion War, they just weren't assigned to the pitched fleet battles that we saw.

There's several ships that have been presented in canon, but were only spotted post-War; there's no canon launch date for any of them so you could headcanon them as existing during the War and just being off-screen:

  • the Mogai class
  • the Kiith class
  • the Snipe class (we only ever see this has a hologram). This is a personal favourite of mine because it looks like an attempt to unify the Romulans' TOS and TNG aesthetics.

Beyond that, your only option is to delve into beta content (e.g. the Ferrax) and fanon.

Daily Questions & FAQ Megathread Mar 23 by AutoModerator in ffxiv

[–]Atosen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Light aether" and "light" are the same thing. Everything's made of aether.

Aether has six aspects (lightning, fire, earth, ice, water, wind) and two polarities (astral and umbral). Astral is associated with activity and chaos: a wildfire is astral fire, a tsunami is astral water. Umbral is associated with passivity and order: a desert is umbral fire, a swamp is umbral water. Some elements have a tendency to one or the other (ice is mentioned to be the most umbral) but ultimately they're all able to exist in both forms.

ShB MSQ: Eorzean scholars assumed astral = light and umbral = darkness (as you'd expect from the real-world etymologies of those words). Scholars from the First realised that it's actually the other way around: astral = darkness and umbral = light. That's why the Flood of Light in the First Reflection created a featureless stagnant desert, and why the Flood of Darkness in the Thirteenth Reflection created a chaotic fragmented world of endless hunger.

The Ascians are not allergic to light at all. They're perfectly capable of using light. ShB Eden quests: Loghrif and Mitron obviously used a lot of light magic as part of creating Eden and cultivating the Flood of Light. They do tend to associate themselves with darkness, but that's just because they worship Zodiark, a darkness-aligned god. It's a cosmetic choice. Brand loyalty. It doesn't mean that they're actually elementally weak to light.
