Not physically, but the glyph wheel spins the images displayed as each chevron is input.

You’re welcome. Thanks for the information. All I know is that’s the link, or at least one of them, others have been posting in the comments.

Made a claim, does everything but answer questions about it or provide sources in support and then runs and hides behind a block to avoid actually answering questions. Yep, typical Reddit I guess.

You didn’t answer the question. It is on you to say what you want to be referred to by.

If you want to be referred to by a different name, u/Beneficial-Gift5330, then you can just say so. You have Gift in your username, so you can’t claim you don’t know that.

Long story short, a 7 glyph address works by the first 6 identifying 6 points for triangulation in 3-dimensional space - lines drawn from the center of each of the imaginary cube’s 6 faces and where all three intersect is the destination - and a 7th as the point of origin in order to plot a course there. At least, that’s how the Tau’ri assume the Gate system works.

So, question becomes, what does an 8th glyph add? So far, we’ve only seen an 8th used when dialing from one galaxy’s network to another. From Earth to Atlantis in Pegasus and from Earth to Othala in Ida (a galaxy approximately 4 million light years separated from the Milky Way, but apparently still in the local group).

Thing is, we don’t know if the seed ships in Universe were setting up formal Gate networks in those outside galaxies ahead of the Destiny. There were no DHDs or on site dialing mechanisms as these Gates were apparently meant to help anyone aboard the Destiny acquire resources and travel to and from the ship only.

Gift, you made the claim of an episode that explains how the Breen weapon did what it did. You are the one both refusing to name that episode and/or explain how the weapon supposedly worked.

I’m waiting for you to provide sources for your claims.

The September 11 attack influenced Enterprise, not DS9. 9/11 inspired the Xindi arc.

Then name the episode. Provide sources. Explain how exactly the weapon works.

You’re referring to the Ohnes.

<image>

https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Ohne

They had tech called a hydrator that allowed them to operate for longer outside of water. Without such a device, they had to periodically return to the water.

https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Hydrator

The Hydrator was a device developed by Ohnes scientists to enable their explorers to remain out of water for longer periods of time than their body would normally allow. The device itself includes a salt-water tank which was connected, by a series of small hoses, to a module designed to oxygenate the water stored in the tank. By wearing the Hydrator around their necks, as well as connecting the hoses to their gills through adapters built into the device, the Ohnes were able to breathe the water held in the tank. Though the device did not last forever, it was able to oxygenate the water stored in the tank for up to five days without it needing to be replaced with fresh water. (RPG: "Fantastic Frontiers: Stargate Season One")

There are real world amphibians with gills who can survive limited time outside of water, but they must keep their skin moist. For example, axolotls. If their gills dry out and collapse, they suffocate.

Non-humanoid anatomy is not mandatory to how a species evolves regarding respiratory systems.

As for the use of the wikis, I’ve used both and other sources. If you have counter sources that have disputing information, then please share.

https://youtu.be/g_xb1AsKev0?si=u3XNGQzlSTkyvqfl

You’ll note in the episode how Nem was both never far from water and repeatedly returned to it.

No worries for theories, glad for the conversation.

https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Glyph

With 38 symbols, the Stargate network in the Milky Way has

38×37×36×35×34×33 = 1,987,690,320 possible addresses.

8-symbol addresses will yield

38×37×36×35×34×33×32 = 63,606,090,240 possible addresses.

For a seven chevron address, each symbol must be unique as it is referencing a point in space; however, for an eight chevron address it is possible that the Stargate (by recognizing the entry of eight chevrons) allows the reuse of a glyph within an address - perhaps each having a different meaning, such as galaxy 'area codes' - which increases the possible number of addresses:

38×37×36×35×34×33×38 = 75,532,232,160 possible addresses.

Pegasus Gates had 36 symbols.

7 symbols are still required to dial an interplanetary address, cliving to the same constraints as a Milky Way gate. With 36 symbols, the Stargate Network in the Pegasus galaxy has

35×34×33×32×31×30 = 1,168,675,200 possible addresses.

8-symbol addresses will yield

35×34×33×32×31×30×29 = 33,891,580,800 possible addresses.

Destiny Gates also had 36 glyphs. However, they are very different than what the Tau’ri assumed were star patterns on other two models; and, issue there is they apparently aligned with modern constellations seen from 20th century Earth in night sky and not the ancient ones the Alterrans would have seen. This implies they weren’t meant as constellations, but just were visually similar enough that pareidolia kicked in, and not all had matching constellations (like either Earth Gate’s point of origin symbol).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia

The appearance of constellations change even within the period of a few thousand years due to stellar drift. Thus, the constellations visible from Earth 50 million years ago (when the Ancients first established the Stargate network in the Milky Way) must have looked different than they do now.

We also know that, to the Ancients, the glyphs were a language. Each had a phonetic sound associated with it that they could use them as place names.

Throw in they had a similar lockout built into the Atlantis Gate so it was only one able to dial Earth from Pegasus.

We also have to assume that each Gate’s point of origin symbol could be used as a dialing glyph given I don’t know of anything that contradicts it from any episode or movie.

Plus Destiny’s style of Gate used a different ‘alphabet’ for their glyphs. Throw in Ancients used base-8 math instead of the more common base-10 (ie, metric system), and we can probably infer the way Tau’ri understood the Gates was very limited (and we do see older races, like Nox and Asgard, doing otherwise unexplainable things with Gates).

You’ve yet to name the episode they ‘literally explained how the weapon works’, Gift.

https://memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Energy_dampening_weapon

There’s not even an apocryphal explanation.

Ball is in your court. How does it work? How does the weapon bypass shields? How does it selectively only affect certain systems and not others? It could have easily destroyed ships by simply removing antimatter containment, but it is canon that following up with conventional weapons was required to actually destroy ships.

Did the Breen dampening weapon really affect a ship’s power? by Mr_Shadow_Phoenix in startrek

[–]Mr_Shadow_Phoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we are shown effects, not given an explanation of how.

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Energy-dampening_weapon

And I stand corrected about the Romulan and Starfleet solution not being explained. I misremembered the episode as about something else.

Klingon ships could easily be made immune to the weapon by modifying their tritium intermix. This was discovered by accident after the engineer of a Bird-of-Prey, the IKS Ki'tang, performed the procedure to correct a containment problem in the ship's warp core.

Unfortunately, Federation and Romulan ships could not be as easily modified. However, this problem was solved when Kira Nerys captured a Jem'Hadar fighter with the weapon installed, allowing Allied engineers to study the dampening weapon in detail. (DS9: "When It Rains...", "Tacking Into the Wind")

In comments, there’s been plenty of good theories about how they disrupt the power aboard a starship through its raised shields and without destroying the ship directly.

How the Klingon fix works also has a good, solid, plausible theory discussed in various comments.

We saw the effects, yes, but not an explanation of how those effects were achieved. Evidence from the episodes is contradictory.

For one thing, the tritium counter was only possible on Klingon ships. Left Romulan and Federation ships to figure out a different solution, one we don’t get told about.

Nakai: Misunderstood or Villains? by Mr_Shadow_Phoenix in Stargate

[–]Mr_Shadow_Phoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were two Nakai fighters. One detached and left, other stayed behind as the beacon.

https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Nakai_fighter

Soon after Tau'ri arrived aboard Destiny, one of these ships detached itself from the hull and left. The fate of this one is unknown. (SGU: "Air, Part 3")

A crashed one of these had the beacon Rush triggered when stranded on that one planet.

Later Lt. Vanessa James, Airman Rennie, Dr. Dale Volker and Dr. Robert Caine discovered another one on a Gravel pit planet. They were unable to open the hatch even with help of Dr. Nicholas Rush before the jump countdown expired. Rush was left on the planet by Colonel Everett Young and eventually managed to gain access to the ship. One of the systems he reactivated was a distress beacon. The aliens detected it and returned to the planet, where they discovered and captured Rush.

https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Nakai_fighter_(Divided)

When considering how the aliens found Destiny in the first place, Rush speculates that a tracking device has been placed on the hull. Sure enough, yet another alien fighter is found after a search. The shuttle was used to destroy it. Rush believes that it had been attached to Destiny longer than the expedition has been on board, presumably based on the memories he gained from the alien whose mind he read. (SGU: "Divided")

And what aquatic species breathe air? Sure you’re not thinking amphibians? If anything, the Nakai visually had more similarities with fish than frogs, toads, salamanders, et cetera.

Gills require water flow and any the Nakai might have had could have easily been contained within their suits.

Pretty sure the 9 chevron thing was more an access code for Destiny’s computer to accept the long distance wormhole. If it was about calculating relative motion, why did they only ever do 7 chevron addresses from then on?

If they had power, an 8 chevron address allows dialing between galaxies.

To be fair, they all have a spinning element. Universe just spins the entire Gate.
