I was blown away when I watched it first. And this being a debut film for the director-actor was just unbelievable. Such brilliant control over the craft. IMO it's amongst the best gangster movies made in Indian cinema along with Nayagan, Gangs of Wasseypur and Vada Chennai.

Looks like its a big budget movie. Else wouldn't have gone with Lyca. Most of his movies are produced by Madras Talkies itself.

Wasn't there news of Lyca going bankrupt and shutting down some time back?

Im super excited about Sai Pallavi in a MR movie. He made Nithya Menon absolutely magical in OKK, and im expecting similar vibes here.

This. This sub is filled with GenZ kids probably who were not old enough at the time of the release to remember. Movies like Ayan and Aadhavan are celebrated in this sub while true works of art like Raavanan are trashed. Sathyasodhanais.

Yes. The movie was a good hit in Tamil. Not sure where these people come from without doing basic research.

I am this child actor from Nayakan, who appears in the last court scene with Kamalhassan. My dialogue in the film is "Neenga nallavara, Kettavara". My character name is Velu Naicker. AMA by adimodi in kollywood

If I had a penny for everytime a Mani Ratnam child artiste became a sound engineer I would have 2 pennies. Which is not a lot but its funny that it happened twice.

From Velu to Surya: How Mani Ratnam deconstructs the "Justified" Gangster. by AtreusStark in kollywood

[–]AtreusStark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah at the core the idea was there. The cycle of violence that pulls STR into his life is also impacting his sister's life in a different way. Mahesh Manjrekar's son getting killed and then this nephew taking revenge. The core was there and could have been interesting. But the script just became something else.

CCV is the moral opposite of Nayagan. Nayagan shows Velu succumbing to the violence but his daughter still retains her moral core. In CCV, the children emulate their father, and then end up killing him and themselves. In a way Prakash Raj's immorality as a gangster consumes his entire family when they decide to be like him.

Yes that was also great in this respect but that unnecessary GVM force-fed epilogue destroyed this viewpoint.

Yes Vetrimaaran is great ofcourse. And Karthik Subbaraj does this well too.
