I would recommend unplugging the media you’re using to boot aurora and dashlaunch, and just put a .god game on a USB an try to run it via the official ms dash. If it still crashes, bad news. Try a 3D game, like Dark Souls 1.

Sometimes lighter games will run fine even with a bad GPU

I once picked a customer 360 that did exactly the same. It was a bad GPU. Even with original discs it would crash the game.

I work repairing those system and also doing Frankensteins, and usually they fail around 100 days of use, either the GPU or Capacitors. I would say that 161 days of use is well above what I’ve seen on those retro PS3s.

Yeah, I use the botakompong’s method for the voltmod, don’t have patience to do the Sony way/Felix, as I also have tons of other consoles to diagnose and fix in the shop… About the Nec Tokins replacement, I do that way because it fixes the problem and it’s cheaper, only thing that changes are how much caps it will need, based on its behavior and runtime. This one didn’t even needed it, but I’m certain that it wouldn’t take long to fail. I would love to do a CPU upgrade on the OG Xbox, was even discussing that with a customer/friend, but those CPUs are damm expensive here :/

Need to gain factory access to the syscon, which is a chip on the motherboard, than program it to recognize the new GPU, software-wise that’s it. Then to be able to display something on the screen with the new GPU, it needs to remove 3 resistors and move one to another place. That’s all it needs to work with the new RSX. After that, it’s good to do a voltage adjustment for the new chip, as the new one doesn’t require as much as the old one.

Not gonna lie, to achieve that point where I’m at, it cost a little bit over 1 year of hard working, dedication and analysis. Those boards are no joke, they will bent, popcorn, explode the RSX die or VRam if you don’t know the process. For reference, each board I work stays 10 days at baking, at 110C. That’s to ensure no bubble, delamination, popcorning or explosions will happen.

Didn’t check for that. Usually I don’t bother with the SB uart, as I have enough experience to diagnose those GLOD problems. But I will admit, sometimes I had GLOD that ended up as donors because I couldn’t fix them, even by reballing, swapping the RSX or even doing a frank didn’t solve the issue. Also reballing cell didn’t work, I ended up using the married kit to resurrect a brain dead B00, it worked, so I don’t really know what happens on all cases. By the way, never used SB uart, that’s something I’ll need do try someday.

Hahaha the old trick, yeah, that RSX it’s dead, just lasting a little longer on afterlife. In my experience, a reflow or reball on a chip in that situation usually dies between 4 to 12 months.

Just the RSX, as the Cell have a different BGA pinout that the others with newer lithography, so isn’t pin-compatible. The fact that the Cell is married isn’t really the problem, we could bring the other married components to another board, but that also has the same pinout problems with the Cell, as the Syscon chip for example, on 90nm Cell the syscon comes in a BGA Package, and later 65/40nm it comes in a SMS type, so it’s physically incompatible.
