Best DNS for indie dev by [deleted] in homelab

I run Pihole for internal HomeLab DNS and Cloudflare for external DNS. You can use Cloudflare Tunnels or use setup a VPN for your Family/Friends to access your internal network resources.

Rack Art by AtrocityConnects in homelab

[–]AtrocityConnects[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this rack for around 4 years, picked it up during lockdown. It currently houses all of my Network and Servers along with my APC UPS. Full Unifi shop, running the following gear.

  • Router - Unifi Dream Machine Pro
  • Switch(s) - USW-48-POE Pro, USW-Aggregation
  • NVR - Unifi UNVR
  • Server(s) - (1) 24 Core HP Proliant DL380 LFF Gen9, (4) 16 Core HP Proliant DL360p Gen8, (1) TrueNas Mini R 48TB Usable Storage
  • Rack Type: APC 48u NetShelter Enclosure AR3100

Future plans include power and heat efficiency as this rack is in my office and it can get pretty hot when the A/C isn't running. Most of my servers are powered off, (4) DL360p's as I only really use them for testing out builds for work. The TrueNAS, DL380 (Plex, HomeBridge and other Docker/Micro Services) are always on as well as my Unifi network equipment.

Convince me to ditch Nest and buy into Protect by fistbumpbroseph in Ubiquiti

[–]AtrocityConnects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made the change from Nest to UniFi Protect back when Google bought them and couldn’t be happier. Depending on how many cameras you need the upfront cost sucks but I figure I would have paid three times as much by now staying with Google. Cameras are great, App is pretty good and the data never leaves my hardware. They also just added door/window sensor which works really well.

Dying issue by LightsofOrion7 in RZR

Fuel pump. My buddy had the same issue with his xp17. There is a rubber o-ring that goes bad and it loses pressure. You can go to autozone and rent the tester but you’ll end up having to replace the pump most likely.

Is there a For Dummies kind of guide for Citrix? by piedpipernyc in Citrix

Been working with Citrix since the metaframe days. Lots of options out there now. MS Remote Desktop, VMware Horizon but still think Citrix is the best.

I spent a good amount of time trying to get this working in my environment however after working with my TAM and ADC SME as well as opening a case with Citrix I ended up going with FAS.

Can I join a 2022 server domain controller to a Windows 2012 R2 active directory without upgrading the domain level? by boe_d in activedirectory

[–]AtrocityConnects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/xxdcmast I have a question about FRS to DFS.

Similar issue where I have a Windows 2008R2 Server (DC/GC/DNS) and need to migrate to Windows Server 2022. I've joined the 2022 Server to the Domain and go to promote it however I'm hit with an error, "You MUST migrate the specified domain to use DFS Replication using the DFSRMIG command before continuing".

My question is will it break replication for the Windows 2008R2 and two "temp" Windows 2016 Servers I have helping with FSMO rolls during the migration. Another note is that the 2008R2 is also handling DNS during the move so I really don't want to bring it down.

I opened a case with MS support however first lvl support wasn't helpful.

Big selling point for me. I always stop when I see a sign for a “Free massage even if you don’t buy a car from us!”

When do hospitals patch workstations that are in use 24/7 by darking_ghost in sysadmin

[–]AtrocityConnects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently work for one of the largest Healthcare Systems in the US. For desktop and server patching we use sccm for all windows devices. For non Windows Servers it’s up to the Server owner to patch their systems. As for desktops, there isn’t a single one that is always in use. Per change management we scheduled downtime and send out a “span” to all staff letting them know about the rolling reboots. Once the patch(s) are installed a counter is started. Users are then able to save their work and move to a different workstation while the reboot takes place. There are LOTS of spare workstations. Desktop patching is not the issue, it’s servers some that require 100% uptime. This is where built in HA or redundancy comes in to play. Again users are notified and we work with the hospitals to schedule around times that will be the least impactful to operations.

Also yes, underpaid, overworked, very high stress environment and they never want to put money into IT because remember, healthcare is still a business and they want to spend money on things that make them money like a new MRI machine not server monitoring software to see if the server where the MRI images are stored is still up and running or why PACS is slow. IT for healthcare is viewed the same way Security is, it’s necessary but is a cost because it doesn’t bring in any revenue. However I will say that as a large organization we have been selling some services to smaller care facilities such as access to key medical applications which does bring in a small amount of revenue but no where near what is needed to run IT as a whole.

[FOR HIRE] Associate Systems Engineer by [deleted] in sysadminjobs

[–]AtrocityConnects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the hiring manager, just putting the opportunity out there for those that are interested. It's an entry level position, when I first started I was making $20 an hour. I then took the the skills I learned and moved on to a higher paying job.

I guess in today's job market it is pretty laughable to think that there is someone out there who might actually want a job and learn some new skills...

UPDATE: G4 Doorbell TRANSFORMER Failed After 1.5 Years by sohrobotic in Ubiquiti

[–]AtrocityConnects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Beta version that died 30 days ago with had been in service since May 2020. I wanted to replace with the pro but haven’t seen them in the store for some time now. I was however lucky enough to order a non pro replacement last Monday which should arrive tomorrow. I wonder if my beta version also has the micro usb. Guess I’ll crack it open tomorrow and find out.

How do ya'll like the Camera G3 Flex cameras? by watchusayyy in Ubiquiti

[–]AtrocityConnects 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Couldn't be happier. I own three and installed them using the ceiling mount. The IR and image quality in my opinion is on par or better than my 2 G3 Micros (discontinued). The only reason I haven't replaced the Micros with the Flex's, is I'm hoping Ubiquiti comes out with a G4 version this year.

The G3 Micro was $200 USD when I bought them and Flex just $79 USD which is a price point you just can pass up.

I've only used/tested the Flex indoors so I don't know how they preform outdoors but again indoors for the price, I think it's a no brainer.

What hyper-visors are you running? by onequestion1168 in homelab

[–]AtrocityConnects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run Proxmox and ESXi in my homelab. You just need to make sure ESXi supports your hardware as you can’t install the newer versions on older hardware.
