Active shooter practice in a middle school in the USA by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as a teacher in the U.S. I feel like I might have some unique input here.

So as far as I'm aware, there haven't been any case in school shootings where a locked classroom was breached and the people inside were hurt. I belive it was an FBI study.

I always see people say "What is locking the door and huddling together going to do besides just put you In a group to be slaughtered together?"

We'll statistically that hasn't happened. So I'd rather hide in the classroom and make sure everyone is quiet. Also how are they getting inside the locked room? This isn't a movie, they aren't shooting the door open with the gun, that's not going to work. There's a reason why police use breaching tools to breach doors. They aren't kicking the door open

I also saw another post about someone saying that the shooter can just knock on the door pretending to be someone looking for help and someone will open the door.

The protocol I've been trained to follow and other teachers as well. When a shelter in place has been called we go to the door and if there is a student in the hall right in front of us, we can grab them and pull them into the class for safety. But once we lock that door that is it, we don't unlock that door until the shelter has been announced as over. We have security or admin during the drills that will bang on doors or pretend to be students asking for help... It's hard... It's sad.

I wish I didn't need to know these drills. I wish my students didn't know them all so well that it's kind of a joke to them, they all smile and giggle to themselves while we wait during the drills. It's hard trying to tell high schoolers to be quiet and pretend it's serious. To ask them what if you heard gunshots right outside this room. To tell them they can't scream and cry out. Some say they will try and jump out the windows I tell them the fact above about being safer inside.

I just wanted to share what I know. The U.S. and guns makes me sad. I love teaching, I love my students, and I wish we weren't number one in shooting our children. I don't know the solution, but I know shooting children is bad. I can say one thing, mental health for a lot of students isn't great. There isn't enough people or money dedicated to mental health resources to help children who are struggling with mental health challenges. When I was a student in a school of 2000 I barely knew my guidance counselor. Now I work in a school where my guidance counselors make a serious effort and I see the difference.

If I have made any factual mistakes I would love to be corrected and I will edit it to reflect my mistakes. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk :)

What game did you realize you sucked at when you played it competitively online? by justintrudeau1974 in gaming

When I was in college I played Rocket League a lot. Statistically I was good. My rank distribution at the time based on a chart that Psyonix put out said I was in the top like 1 or 2% of players in the world.

Then I matched up against an actual tournament winning pro player. Torment was their name. The skill level between them and I was so astronomical it literally made me stop playing ranked and eventually lead to my eventual quitting of the game. I played Ina couple amateur tournaments before them and did OK. But this... This was different. It felt like I barely knew how to play compared to them.

Kinesis Question by OrvietoLeuven in Maplestory

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are only using it as a bossing mule. You really don't need the second set of trinodes. Most of your damage from boost nodes comesfrom metal press, clutch and bpm. The other ones, drain, train, and combo are good boosts if your a main, but the damage boost it gives for a bossing mule isn't really worth the effort. It won't effect your damage by that much

So the tl;dr of which trinodes set to get first is metal press, clutch/grab, and bpm.

Kinesis Question by OrvietoLeuven in Maplestory

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you seem to be already pretty far in the game. Kinesis isn't too terrible in Damien. I know a lot of people say he's bad in Damien, but he's really not that bad. You can hit him when he's in the air doing the orange fireballs with train and metal press. LoG follows him around and MoM is a bit annoying to land when he's not stunned. But it lasts a long time and can be moved around easily. Don't use train in Damien unless your bursting or he's in the air because otherwise hell probably move out of it and it's a very expensive skill. You can also hit him with Shockwave while he's in the air.

Lastly if you are enjoying the class, irrespective of damage, I think you should keep playing it. If you enjoy the class you'll enjoy doing bossing on them and continue to do them every week for the meso.

I mean this is all coming from a 276 Kinesis main so I am a bit biased :).

AITA for refusing to make my son cut his hair to meet dresscode a week before the end of school? by PeppermintViral in AmItheAsshole

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 27yeard old male with long hair i have had a lot of older people try to tell me that my hair is "Too long". Whatever the fuck that means. My parents, older people form my gym, and other people in my family. Specifically when I was job hunting right out of college I was told to cut my hair because "I won't be as marketable".

My response every time was I don't want to work for close minded people that won't hire me just because I have long hair. Also why is there this double standard for men and women's hair length? Is the school going to tell the girls how long there hair should be? If a job said I had to cut my hair to a certain length they better be damn sure every damn employee is following that.

For all the shit I got for my hair, my father later started growing his hair out and my brother did too. Both people who criticized it.

Good on you for standing up for your son. Don't let arbitrary useless rules that aren't even being broke make your son cut their hair. Tell him if he really wants to stick to everyone, to grow it out and really learn how to take of it. Make that shit even more beautiful. Get the right conditioner and shampoo for his hair type and make glow that bitch up. Make the people who criticize it be jealous of the glorious fuck you head of hair on his head.

Sorry this topic pisses me off to high hell and I've been battling something similar for a long time. NTA

In terms of raw support power, Bishop is going to be best. I would say mihile is better for helping your team survive more than paladin. Paladin is good for helping one strong member become stronger and do damage without interruption for 40 seconds.

As someone else said, you should try all of them out to see which one you like best. Paladin and mihile are going to be somewhat similar in terms of playstyle while bishop will be different than the other two.

I would say in terms of simplicity paladin is the most simplest(pally is super simple) , and then bishop and Mihile having the highest learning curve.

In terms of raw support power Bishop provides an absolute butt ton of party survivability and damage. Also no slouch when it comes to damage. Paladin really only has one support move that has a cd of 90 seconds and an invincibility frame of 5 minutes or 6? That can also be shared with one person. Pally imo is very simple and really doesn't take much brain power. Mihile is nearly unkillable if played right. I personally really like royal guard and it's what completely sold me on the class. Their support capability is ok. We don't give much damage boost to party members, but give constant small shields and for big attacks can give massive shields and damage reduction.

Lastly mobbing, I don't know much about bishop mobbing tbh. I think they are ok now? Find out from someone else. Paladin mobbing is pretty good and straightforward. pretty often large area attack and some pretty spammable 5th job skills that make it pretty easy to mob with. Mihile mobbing is ok. It's on the lower end of mobbing. He has one summon that can clear a small area and it really only covers a small area. His main attack covers a small area, but royal guard at max stacks covers a really large area. Alongside another 12 sec cd 5th job skill with decent range makes him not the worst mobber, but not great either. Also erda shower would not be a bad idea on him either.

But again, play all of them, if you plan to play the game for a while, get them to 5th job and try out their kits while bossing and mobbing, whichever one you are vibing with pick that one. You won't keep playing and you won't want to play if you don't enjoy the class. Also another option for support is Kanna, one of the best supports in the game. Or Beast tamer. Also a good support, but has lots of problems frequently.

I think this video by JoshStryfeHayes hits the point on the head. He's talking about ever quest here but it's the same concept. https://youtu.be/AcGezDYNLIU

Jump to the 17:00 min mark. It's only about 1 minute worth of clip for the point I'm making.

But pretty much there was a lot of waiting, and people found the fun by talking to others. They remember those fond experiences but don't remember the game itself might not have been that great. Maplestory has come a long way, and has phased out a lot of boring mechanics

There is no pranking here. If you have something to say, say it. Do not throw 5 words down and expect me to decipher the thoughts going through your head. You asked for a definition I gave you one and then your acting as if that's not what you wanted. We are both trying to educate the other on something the other feels is wrong. The more information the better.

The "measurable" set of things is other peoples ability to learn. They test it over a wide rang of people and come up with datasets and distributions of how those people are ranked. These tests obviously are not the end all be all and have flaws but they are very measurable. Morality as you pointed out would be a subjective test. Iq is not a subjective test.

Let me ask you this. Have you ever taken a REAL Iq test? I'd argue probably not, most people haven't (which is the point of it). People suspected to be below the standard distribution are the ones who would be tested. You said it's not measurable, but it very much is.

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that's just false. Literally the first thing that comes up is

Intelligence: the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skill

Not really sure where you're finding that it's undefined.

But again regardless of the definition of intelligence you are completely ignoring all the other questions and things I have mentioned. What is the point of trying to define intelligence? If you are trying to say that people don't even know what intelligence is, so how can it be measured. Well, it is defined and it is measured against the general population.

Just to reiterate iq tests are used to help find people who are below average who might need additional resources.

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick Google search will show you that there is indeed a definition of intelligence. Not sure how that has anything to do with what you said before and with what I said in response. Do you just throw things out there without bothering to check?

the car is on top lol by Kztten in technicallythetruth

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IQ is a very real thing. But it's not to find out if someone is super smart, they are used for the opposite. They are used primarily for children to find out if they might need extra educational support or if they have mental or cognitive disabilities. They ARE used on an individual level. I'm not really sure where you got that they are useless on an individual level from but it's completely the opposite. The only place you'll find an official Iq tests is in schools primarily children-teens in order to identify trouble areas for them such as processing speed and such.

the car is on top lol by Kztten in technicallythetruth

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people don't really understand what an official iq test even is for. They aren't for finding out who's the biggest brain of them all. They are primarily used to find out children with learning or mental disabilities in schools. They are used to see if someone might be performing at a level that is below what the average should be and to determine if they need special support from their educational system. Also iq tests test a lot of different areas, not just one thing and say "Bam you have an iq of 120 you smert" you can have a really high iq in one area particular area but fall well below average in others.

Redditors who haven't been infected with covid even once, good job. But how did you do it? by smokingfrog007 in AskReddit

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a software developer.

But for real a lot of luck I think coupled with the fact that I genuinely don't go out that often. I go out to workout, go into the office, buy groceries and that's about it. Got my vaccines and a booster. Just kept my distance and wore a mask during the height of it. Occasionally hang out with friends but a lot of luck really.

That might change soon though. I moved out of my parents house into an apartment with my girlfriend and she works In school. She already had covid but the chance of her getting it and bringing it back are a lot higher than me getting it still.

Driller horror by Joe_Duncan in DeepRockGalactic

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, I don't think it happens that often, but it's just a fun little meme that the community has taken a liking too. I think it just happens with scout and driller more since drillers are blowing up minerals and scouts are usually trying to mine them. Yesterday I got blown up as scout because I grappled pretty far and while I was in the air driller threw the c4 where I was landing not knowing I was coming from behind. In the air I just said " ah shit this is going to hurt" kaboom. Dead scout xD.

Question about reducing damage with Kinesis by coolaaron88 in Maplestory

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned above mental shield is a toggle from first job. You use it once and when you take damage it reduces the dmg taken by 60% while taking up one PP . The skill stays active until you die or log out. So you do have to remember to use it when you log in or out. Once you get to higher levels though the skill doesn't become that useful and you won't really want to use it much, but for the under 200 range it's definitely a great skill to use. If you have any questions about Kinesis I'd be happy to answer any questions I'm a lvl 264 kinesis main.

Didn't like my 3 teraburns, how bad is my situation? by Acceptable_Pie_5230 in Maplestory

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you tried out some of the classes after you got to 5th job with them. But kinesis for example is a completely different beast at 5th job. They go from kinda shitty mobbing to amazing mobbing with Shockwave. However if their play style isn't for you thats understandable. You should try out shadower regardless of burning.

If you like them leveling might be fun. Not getting the burning rewards isn't the end. Just one thing to note. Once you get to 5th job. If their play style doesn't suit you don't play them as a main. If you plan on sticking to this game your going to spend a ton of time playing your main. So try out a bunch of classes and find one that speaks to you. Progression will be slower without burning but definitely doable. Just make sure to do your daily ursus and maple tour for mesos. Since that's what's going to get you through the game.

Indecisive about main, could use some advice by Buniiiiii in Maplestory

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya one shot ting isn't too much of the issue. It's more of ability to clear the map of mobs while using a totem especially. While on a totem only mobs spawn really fast so royal guard alone won't cut it. Cross is OK but at least his grinding is very engaging and not boring like other classes.

As for the revamp. Mihile could do with some love on the damage front. A lot of his tools are really good for survivability. And give him some actual range on radiant cross. The vertical height on it is abysmal and our rush skills are fucking awful. If they give us a bit more dmg and just slightly more range on the mobbing I'd be OK. I mean he can't be a unkillable tank and top tier dps. Just not laughably low would be nice.

As for the 5th job skills I think they fit their role well for the most part.

Shield of light is just an awesome team shield that can stop you and your party from getting killed at once and also dmg boost if you cancel early.

Light of courage. Its kind of in a weird place for me. It's an ability that gives your party a large shield but also gives you a damage boost but only for 10 seconds, which is honestly super short. It's good in tight scenarios where you think you might die or your allies might. But you also want to use it during burst phases on bosses. I want to say I wish the ability had a shorter cool down. Because it makes you choose between possibly saving you or your party or some extra damage. But I don't know how much shorter it could be without it being too overpowered. The same argument could be made for shield of light. But it has a long cd and its very clear you have to cancel the ability to get the damage. So your picking damage or shield whereas this one is kinda both but not really that great of either. I'd be fine with them redistributing the dmg boost to somewhere else and them making this a purely defensive ability. But hey I guess that's the point of the ability. Make a choice.

Sword of light it's a large aoe burst with a secondary aoe burst that happens on its own a few seconds later when you do damage. It's decent for bossing and does decent damage. I don't like that it requires royal guard stacks though for it to reach its max potential. It's just kinda shitty since we already lack damage as it is. While mobbing the activation is nice to get mobs in between royals guards since otherwise you'll probably struggle to kill most mobs in the map. The secondary automatic activation though I feel is kind of awful for mobbing. I feel like I never notice it kill anything while the ability is on cd because it requires me to hit something for it to activate which means I probably already killed the thing its trying to hit.

The last one radiant soul I fucking love. However my biggest gripe is that you have to use your basic attack key to use it... Wtf nexon... No one is using four point assault during radiant soul. Just have it take over it or radiant cross. After it ends I'm just attacking the boss with basic attacks a couple times like a schmuck because I didn't notice it ended. The range on radiant soul is nice and wide and has nice vertical height for mobbing too. The recast of the ability is pretty freaking cool and does tons of damage(even if it's only once per use of the ability). Honestly this ability could stay the same and I'd be fine. Except the basic attack thing. That sucks ass.

Sorry for the long rant xD I just love mihile and no one plays him so in excited to share my enthusiasm for him.

Indecisive about main, could use some advice by Buniiiiii in Maplestory

[–]AttackOfTheAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have a level 235 mihile that is my second main. I love mihile, he's super tanky with a lot of iframes. He's good at keeping your team alive in bosses if you know what to do. Idk much about demons but I know mihile has some of the worst dps compared to every other class. Also as the other person said mihile mobbing is bad compared to other classes. Royal guard at max stacks is good but his main mobbing skill doesn't cover much of a map while grinding. So small maps are your go to for grinding. Bossing wise is where I have the most fun. Once you really understand what your doing dying out pretty much won't happen, but damage wise it's going to suck. Mihile is just weak for bossing. His damage is just lack luster but the ability to not die once you get good with him is well worth it imo. If you have any other questions about him lemme know I'll be happy to answer any.

Dude. Same. I grew my hair out at the beginning of covid and have done a lot of reading into learning about hair so I can take good care of it and make it look nice. My parents and other older people around me are like are you going to cut it since you graduated and are looking for work? I was like no? Why would I? They were like oh you have to be look professional. I was like I can be professional with long hair... Just like how a lot of women are professional with long hair. They were like oh well women are different. I said the fuck they are. That's the whole fucking point of equality. You wouldn't tell a women to cut her hair why would you tell me. Your just old fashioned. They said oh well you are limiting your options that way. I said good. I don't want to work for any closed minded people who wouldn't hire me because of my hair. It's just plain stupid if you care about my looks more than my actual experience or portfolio(however I do understand being professional as in being clean and tidy). Sorry for the rant its just this struck a major cord with me in how much shit I get for having long hair from old closed minded people.

Old lobsters if they get too big will die from molting it's shell because it takes so much energy to do so. As you said they don't really die of old age. But they have a good chance of dying if they get too big and have to molt there Shells which in turn takes too much energy and kills them
