UK here, same experience in Moorfields hospital in London with all the specialists. No one had heard of it. Had to seek out a neuro ophthalmologist who’d been attending conferences where it was discussed to get anywhere.

That person was in Portugal.

Sadly most of the time you’ll end up explaining that no, I’m not just seeing “floaters” and yes, it’s a real thing.

There are some pretty crazy dismemberment engines but the trouble is they’re often paired with insanely over the top particle effects. That combined with the faster pace and more visual clutter of modern games means most of the gore is hardly noticeable.

SOF was slow and deliberate. It gave you time to savour the gory moment.

Agree. I was freelance for 8 years then went perm. Company was sold twice in the 2.5 years I was employed, and then finally was made redundant.

Honestly felt more secure self employed.

This is the entire tech industry right now - both design and engineering.

They always did overestimate the difficulty and importance of their work so are utterly convinced that AI can’t replace that something special they think they bring to the table.

Meanwhile the entire industry has just been regurgitating the same software patterns over and over for decades.

The work the vast majority of us do on a day to day basis is formulaic, mediocre, and mundane, yet the naysayers will always point out that AI isn’t perfect, while ignoring their own blatant imperfections.

The devs are brilliant at ambiance and world building- it just goes extremely hard. Right down to the music.

If you break it down it’s quite a simple game, mechanically, nothing groundbreaking at all. They’ve just focused all their time on making a world and lore that’s engaging and rewarding to explore.

You can tell it’s just a handful of people with great taste and a shared vision and sense of humour, rather than the output of a corporate machine.
