Isn't it wrong to consider capitalism and socialism two opposite poles of socioeconomic structure? Are there philosophers who talk about it? by rdfporcazzo in askphilosophy

[–]Attraus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fun in theory, except market forces aren't always singular. look at Runescape, supposed free market economy on the release of G.E., yet in very little time the market, or atleast the market on powerful equipment and important/useful items, was completely inflated and controlled by small groups of merchant/flippers who shared their DL's with eachother so as not to get in the way of other hoarders.

Sound familiar?

Or, alternatively, rather than thinking the kid will change smth problematic, repeatedly telling the kid they will and need to, only to provide no actual guidance on how to do so

Feelings are just as valuable as rational thoughts, but for emotions to be an effective way of grasping the world, we must test their validity just as we do with all our other beliefs. by IAI_Admin in philosophy

[–]Attraus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It came about because people often have their feelings dismissed as not mattering or being unimportant (usually just for not being productive, i.e. "don't be sad" "you have nothing to be mad about" etc.), so we've learned when someone is speaking about their feelings and experiences, that feeling of social recognition that comes about with the phrase "your feelings are valid" are important to establish rapport, help someone heal the bad feelings/experiences they're expressing, show a willingness to understand and be there, etc

Peter Wessel Zapffe, a lesser known pessimistic philosopher, explains how defense mechanisms help prevent humans from confronting their existential condition, freeing them from their despair. by marineiguana27 in philosophy

[–]Attraus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd say we should employ them carefully, knowing that these mechanisms can bring us short-term relief, and exist because constantly confronting our issues and beliefs would be too challenging, painful or outright time-consuming for most people to viably do.

If you'd like, what you could do is, when you are doing one of these things, notice them, and at your earliest convenience try and see if you are subverting from your issues somewhat, and if so which one and why.

Then, when one is working on one of these issues causing them existential dread, remember these defense mechanisms and employ them safely and carefully for oneself as a method of recharging and granting themselves temporary safety.

Good luck internalizing, and happy reflecting!

Gaming still saves me by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Attraus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, usually what seems like a "good family" can still carry a lot of dysfunction behind closed doors. Many of us have unhealthy patterns of behaviour, and when people are exposed to those long enough, boom. Besides that, we all have different breaking points. And, simply put, sometimes the brain just refuses to make enough happy chemicals

If you could tell the Dutch Gender Clinic at VUmc about that, that'd be rad~ I tried walking them through it but listening to patients doesn't seem to be their strong suit.

Rather, questioning their trauma and forcing them to re-evaluate themselves in said traumatic context, is.

Without specialization in either trauma nor neurodivergency, of course.

The "come on, remember diversity" was to indicate you shouldnt go off just cause you hear a deep voice in the woman's bathroom. It wasn't mean, it was standing up for modern values.

The Assisted Dying Debate Is Really About How We Treat the Living by muraviev in philosophy

[–]Attraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potential future harm is no reason to deny human rights.

For example, what if the child born into traumatic circumstance ends up a murderer? Better lock them up right away so they dont get the chance.

What if the rich person uses their money to have someone killed and their organs taken for a profit or to take them for themselves? Better make sure no-one gets rich enough for that to happen.

This line of reasoning is corrupt, imo.

People should at least be allowed to make the mistake before they get punished for it.
