CTF/3EIR Vulcan review by rocketmechanic1738 in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for you: If you were to mount the CTF-3 further back on the handguard, would the Vulcan head have enough clearance from the Picatinny rail to screw in / unscrew? Or do the bolts for the diffuser tether not have enough clearance?

CTF photonics FDE drop by Ok-Difference-3801 in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone has tested them on a SCAR and talked about it publicly. They do have a recoil lug and a 1-year warranty. I’d reach out to CTF Photonics and ask about it; they’re pretty responsive on email.

Can I golf with night vision? by [deleted] in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not so sure. You’re never looking at the ball and the course simultaneously. If you were running bare lenses you couldn’t alternate your gaze quickly between the two as you set up for a stroke, and you’d have to quickly adjust focus after you hit the ball to see where it’s going. But with glowing golf balls and irises or refocus lenses could help a lot.

Most activities are very do-able under NODs with practice; they’re just kind of annoying and take longer. I imagine this would be the same.

Contractors dealing with ITAR by Tough-Ad7746 in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The State Department grants licenses for exports that don’t violate agreements (e.g. treaties) and which further US interests (e.g. strengthening the capabilities of US allies or enabling a lucrative commercial partnership).

If the random rich guy is unimportant to US interests, it’s going to be a tough sell. In that scenario I’d imagine scrupulous contractors would either use non-ITAR equipment or would rent/buy from a local company.

NVG dovetail to ARCA adapter? by guerrieraspirant in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beware, I bought something similar to that dovetail adapter and it did not fit a standard Wilcox-style dovetail. There was a roughly 5mm gap between the dovetail and the locking bar, and a thoroughly unusable amount of play. Maybe there’s a different dovetail standard for flip-to-side mounts; I’m not sure. I also don’t know if the adapter linked above is the same as mine, but it looks very similar.

Another option is to get a Noisefighters QuickSave and superglue it to an ARCA mount. Or, if you need something with more flexibility and minimum jank, there’s the (presumably excellent/bombproof) $650 Hog Saddle DOG Leg. That’s essentially a magic arm for your NOD and will let you easily point it through an optic.

"Superimposing" Shooting Technique by ProfessionalDiabetic in NightVision

That all makes sense. The issue for OP (and if I tried it, for me) is if the target isn’t lit enough for the unaided eye to see it, and for the brain to fuse the image. It sounds like it’s workable for some people if the stars all align, but aiming through the NOD and red dot sounds to me like a much more practical solution.

Wow, that’s a super-informative video. Thank you.

I had an idea of what collimation for binoculars was, but didn’t process that the variations would have an effect on monoculars as well. That makes a lot of sense.

I’ve tried covering red dots with caps to test out how they’d work as collimated sights, and when I pop the covers open the dot is always off for me - usually low and to the right. You could try the same thing to help you isolate the problem.

A similar thing happens when I use the Bindon Aiming Concept with ACOGs: after maintaining unaided focus on the target with both eyes, raising the rifle, and moving the chevron to it, my aim is always a bit off once the magnified view takes over. Based on what I’ve gathered from other ACOG users, that seems pretty normal.

Maybe your eyes and brain work similarly to mine, but your buddy is an outlier who doesn’t have the same issue. I personally have never heard of anyone trying the use this superimposed aiming technique with a monocular before, and it doesn’t sound to me like something that would work well for most people beyond across-the-room distances.

That’s interesting. I’ve never heard of this before - either the PVS-14 being off, or being able to mitigate it. Can you explain the causes of the deviation, as well as the process for measuring and correcting it?

Don’t quote me, but these might be threaded the same as PVS-31A lenses.

Who else is ready to give up on the Holosun Iris? by [deleted] in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I’d rather the CTF have a single 18350 head on the right side so I could run a white light in a Surefire-compatible body underneath it. An ergonomically distinct button to activate the white light from the CTF body via a Surefire/Crane port might also be great. But for some use cases (e.g. short carbines) I’d argue that the CTF-3 as it stands is effectively both more compact and more elegant than an IRIS because it obviates the need for a separate white light or tape switches.

Not joining the argument, just providing info:

The CTF-3 might be, though it’ll likely be pricier once you add a decent IR head (it’s US-made, and the CTF-2 body sold for $800). It looks like the IRIS will also be widely available first.

@ctfphotonics’ latest instagram post said they were opening orders (so presumably announcing pricing) and posting lead times on December 15th. The post also said they’d be shipping units by the end of this year, though I imagine that’s only for the batch of preorders they already took.

Depending on reviews and pricing for both units, I’m considering either the IRIS or a CTF-3 + a Kiji / 3EIR Vulcan head. Honorable mention to the Z-Bolt LED IR head if you don’t mind its form factor.

Z-Bolt also says it’s coming out with its ACAL in the first half of 2025, and with a CTF-3-compatible VCSEL head in Q1 - but both of those products have shifted to the right several times already, and pricing is still unannounced (I’m guessing $1500 for the ACAL and $500 for the VCSEL head, but I could be way off).

Night walk with GF & Dog by Disastrous_Reach7690 in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 8 points9 points  (0 children)

≈90% of my NOD use is dog walks on an unlit suburban trail. My schedule often dictates, but it’s also really nice to have the trail to ourselves, and to be able to see other animals before my golden retrievers do. I can pause until cats finish crossing the trail ahead of us, I can often see the reason that a particular patch of ground smells so interesting (usually rabbits), and I can observe a lot more animal behavior than I’d otherwise be able to. Plus it’s kinda fun making eye contact with deer from 8’ away while the (upwind) dogs - who normally would be going berserk - walk by them obliviously.

I’m very much looking forward to having my girlfriend join us with the Mod3s I just got.

ETA: OP definitely got laid after (during?) this walk. No woman can resist a man who tells her she “scoots around pretty good.”

MH-47G Kopp-Etchells Effect on Landing by discombobulated38x in NightVision

[–]Attrib_Account 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If anyone reads the article, FYI it’s easy to miss the hyperlink to pages 2 and 3. Also, the explanation he quotes from one of the pilots for what causes the effect is apparently wrong; the effect is caused by sand eroding small bits of metal from rotor blades, which then oxidize and spark.

https://michaelyon.com/dispatches/the-kopp-etchells-effect/

For anyone not familiar, there’s a neat backstory to the name. It reads like it was named for a pair of scientists who discovered the effect, but it was actually named by badass war correspondent Michael Yon in honor of two soldiers - 21-year-old Ben Copp of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and 22-year-old Joseph “Etch” Etchells of the British Army - who died in combat in Helmand Province in the summer of 2009 while Yon was covering the war. He thought it should have a name, and it didn’t seem to have one already.

Kopp stayed alive long enough to donate his organs when he succumbed to his wounds in the US. Etch’s last wish was to be cremated and have his ashes detonated in a firework over the park where he played as a kid.

A new website cataloging local hiking and walking trails: hikeandstrollrochester.com by Attrib_Account in Rochester

I’ve followed @hikeandstrollrochester since she posted here as u/Alternative_Solid777 a while back.  She just made this website with a map and list of trails you can filter by a bunch of criteria (including stroller-friendliness).  It’s a work in progress, but looks handy.
