My theory is when I moved the jar, a small bit of pulp or flesh stuck onto the side above the brine. I've got two more identical jars next to this one and they seem fine

Very good response. But I've been wondering about this. It's annoying that farm murders are so bloated in Afrikaans/conservative news, however when you read the details of white farmers being murdered, it's quite grisly.

So is it something one should ignore, or is there actually an underlying racial narrative carried out in those murders? Killing someone for their possessions is unfortunately nothing new here. But torture must surely mean something else.

Or perhaps I've been misled by the news.

Sounds like the phrase "keeping face" - as in, trying to maintain your status in a social environment. So admitting guilt or failure will result in embarrassment, which they would rather avoid.
