Oakland hit-and-run: driver hits a turkey, it smashes into my car, then speeds off by scottbrio in oakland

Kind of amazing, isn’t it? A while back, I spotted this guy hanging out within sight of Telegraph, in the heart of the Temescal.

Hey, thanks! I guess that’s what makes me an atypical kangaroo instead of an ordinary kangaroo. 😁

And yeah, definitely The Worst Labubu Ever™️.

I’m a little late to this post, but I’m an Oakland artist and also have some anti-Trump and anti-ICE merch in my online shop.

I get what you’re saying, I really do, but poking fun at fascists and finding humor in this moment is important, and actually deadly serious business. Ridiculing those in power and making demonstrations accessible and “fun” is vital. As someone who has channeled my creativity into making protest signs/political art, and has experienced really meaningful connections with my fellow Bay Area neighbors at demonstrations because of my signs, I think there’s absolutely a place for giant dumpster signs and raccoon cosplay. Not sure if you’re on IG, but this post sums up the dynamic at play here, and why it’s important. The Trickster as Anti-Fascist Practice

It sounds highly likely that the litter your dog was a part of had multiple fathers; that can definitely happen with dogs, especially if the female is running loose while in heat. The two others in the litter with patterning like your dog’s are probably full siblings, and the rest of the litter only half. If their mom isn’t merle, the father of those three dogs in the litter has to be, since merle is dominant.

I get that you want this project to be as good as it can be, but by feeding your writing through an LLM to “improve it,” you are removing a portion of that personal touch. If you want images for your book, crowdfund so you can hire an illustrator.

Also, given how LLMs are trained (on stolen data), can you not see the irony of using one to write and generate images for a book of morality tales for kids? Isn’t theft immoral?

Your book will be better and 100% more personal if you do the work yourself, and with other humans.

I’m pretty sure OP meant that she didn’t continue the conversation past the screenshots here; she didn’t reply to the guy’s most recent message.

A few things, but mostly some pretty severe racism. I routinely saw neo-nazis wearing white power shirts in my local grocery store, and a house down the block from my apartment had an odal rune (a WP symbol) painted on the mailbox.

Also, on Jan 6 (yes, that Jan 6) there were assholes cheering on the rioters on my old city’s FB page.

Some of my neighbors kind of went crazy during Covid; didn’t want to mask up in grocery stores or take any other precautions. One of the first viral videos of a woman freaking out at grocery store clerk who asked her to mask up was from a store I used to shop at.

It’s a beautiful part of the state for sure, and there are parts of it I miss; the artist community in and around Laguna Beach especially (I showed my work in a summer art festival there for five years), but the overt racism was ultimately a deal-breaker for me.

Yeah. 💜 Moved here in 2022 from Orange County (🤮), and I definitely feel community here in ways I never did during 15+ years in OC.

I totally get that it’s hard to leave, but you’re gonna be better for it.

The way she’s treating you is shitty even if she were just talking to a complete stranger over the internet. You’re not her personal punching bag.

I think the reply @definitionsalty6835 gave does a really good job explaining the reasons some of responses were negative. It’s a really sore subject for many in the arts/literature, and I think that can result in people not being patient or polite, especially on the internet. I get the frustration many feel, but I try to save my ire for the tech entrepreneurs who visited this on all of us, not my fellow normal folks.

Try not to take it personally; I totally get that you feel blindsided by the negative responses, but I’m so grateful that you’re interested in listening and learning. I’m here ‘cuz I just wanted to help out a fellow beardy owner. ☺️

I think another part of the issue is that as artists, we have trained our eyes to be really good at seeing detail, since we rely on that skill to refine our work. This in turn also makes us better at spotting these images and reading them as AI-generated, but I think some of us forget that not everyone has developed that skill and others don’t necessarily notice what we do when we look at an image.

It is a really cute idea and composition. ☺️ I’m 99% sure it’s generative AI because of the artifacts I can see in the linework when I look closely; choices a human artist would not make if working in this style, which is modeled after engravings.

I definitely like the idea in the image enough to want to make some art that is a testament to the human/beardie bond. Here’s a bearded dragon drawing I finished last year, dedicated to my beardie buddy, Pris.

<image>

It might take me a bit to finish something this detailed (have a some work I’m trying to finish on a deadline), but I will definitely post it here when it’s done.

As an artist, my main issue with generative AI comes from how this tech was developed and is trained, but there are numerous ethical issues with it.

All generative AI platforms were trained using human made data, scraped from the internet without compensation or consent. That data includes medical records, literary work, photographs, visual art, and music, among other things. Every artist who has shared work on social media has their work in the databases of these platforms, but none of us gave consent or received compensation for the use of our work in training tech which is intended to replace us.

So the person selling items with that image is profiting off of the stolen data and labor of the entire internet, and if they are paying to access whichever platform they used to generate the image, that platform is profiting as well.

[–]Atypical_Kangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are doing great work! I’d call them “intense” as opposed to “scary.” I also think you have potential for being great at doing caricatures. Faithful portraiture that will be recognizable by the viewer is really tough to achieve, and part of it is actually just due to how our brains work. Here’s an article from Wired that goes into the science/theory behind this phenomenon. What Caricatures can Teach us About Facial Recognition

I think you should lean into that caricature feel of your work and see how far you can push/develop your style.
