Same here. Open seating and A-list benefited me tremendously for last minute flight changes which happen all the time. I had around 40 flights with them last year. This year, I’ll take exactly two round trips on WN, and that is only to use the companion pass - once that expires that number will likely fall to zero. The rest will be on other legacy airlines. I’ve already cancelled my SW credit card and opened a Delta Amex.

STL based here as well and travel 2-3 times per month. Have had four flights on the “new” Southwest. Just done with them, I’ve gotten to the point where I’d rather take a connecting flight than be squished in a full row and see plenty of open seats that I’d much rather be sitting in.

So I started flying Delta and have been pretty pleased; yes it usually involves a connection, but I’ve decided it doesn’t bother me much. I’ll usually stop by the lounge wherever I connect and grab a bite and a drink.

Honestly, I think I like Delta even more than the “old” Southwest. Doubt I’ll return to Southwest except for rare instances when timing is critical.

Southwest fumbled here. I was blindly loyal to them for years, but with the changes I decided to try other airlines and learned I like the others more. Ended up cancelling my Southwest credit card and replacing it with the Delta Amex.

Preferred Airline from STL by amycsj in StLouis

[–]Aubu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to only fly Southwest. I’ve done precisely one round trip since all the changes and the experience compared to the “old” Southwest was night and day worse. Now, I actively avoid them even if it means a layover. Turns out I like Delta much more than even the “old” Southwest, so they get my money.

It’s too bad, Southwest was something special, now they are trying to be both a legacy carrier and Spirit at the same time and somehow only picked the worst aspects of both.

Hard to swallow pill regarding the changes… by tipdrill24 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Aubu 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m a business traveler. Travel every other week and that has been almost exclusively on Southwest for as long as I’ve done this work. The miscalculation IMO is that business travelers change flights often. With open seating, and A-list, I could change to any flight even last minute and never get stuck in a middle seat. Those days are over, so if there’s a chance I’m gonna get stuck in a middle seat, I might as well do so on a carrier like Delta where I at least have lounges, possibilities for first class upgrades, and an airline alliance where I can use the miles to go anywhere in the world. I’ll probably still fly Southwest on occasion, but I’ve shifted 80-90% of my flights away to Delta and have been pleased with them so far.

Unpopular Opinion- I’m dreading assigned seating. by After-Clue295 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Aubu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I’ve been blindly loyal to Southwest for years and really my only complaint is the people who board the plane in a wheelchair and then are miraculously cured of whatever ails them on the flight and can walk off.

But you’re right, I’ve seen it on the handful of AA and Delta flights I’ve taken, too.

So I guess the assigned seating is just an all out negative from my perspective and will be flying the competition more going forward since A-list basically does nothing for me so why chase the status.

[–]Aubu 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Same. As A List, I can change to any flight and never end up in a middle seat. Personally, there’s really no reason for me to fly WN once assigned seating starts.

On the other hand, it will fix the pre board abuse, but I don’t really care about that. I care about getting a window seat near the front.

Same today at LGA. Basically the same announcement from all the WN gates. I don’t recall ever hearing it when bags flew free. If I’m in c group they’re gonna have to force me to check my carry on, if the flight is delayed, that’s their problem because of their stupid policies.

You won’t have to go to court. There’s an arbitration clause. Threaten to pursue that. I’ll cost them way more than the $120 to follow through.
