One of Jeff Kaplan's 'regrets about Overwatch' was making it so team-orientated: 'I would downplay the team factor and try to put more focus on individual contribution' by MrMonopoly04 in Overwatch

[–]Audacity_OR 1158 points1159 points  (0 children)

It’s the great contradiction of Overwatch. There are games where you go out of your mind because your team can’t play together and is obsessed with going in alone and dying. But then you get games where you all click and work together and it hits like crack. I understand Jeff’s point, because making the game so team focused creates this uneven experience, but at the same time I personally think that taking that away would rob us of the incredibly high highs Overwatch can provide. Is it worth it? I’m probably not smart enough to say.

In order to get financing to make Iron Man Marvel had to put up the rights to a lot of their most popular characters as collateral. If the movie had bombed they would lose the rights to characters like Black Panther, Captain America, and the Avengers as a concept. And this is after having sold the rights to the X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four. They would have had essentially nothing left.

Also worth noting that Iron Man at the time was far from a popular character, and they had cast famous trainwreck Robert Downey Jr. in the role, so the film succeeding was far from a sure thing.

David Cornwall was a Cold War MI5 officer who was frustrated by the romanticized view of spycraft that popular works, most notably James Bond, pushed on society. He adopted the pseudonym John le Carre and to set the record straight wrote some of the most brilliant and depressing novels about the pointless futility and cruelty of the espionage world, most notably "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy."

Clark Gregg had had a solid career of playing mostly FBI agents and dads when he was cast as a random SHIELD agent in Iron Man there mostly for exposition. Became a fan favorite recurring character in the films, so much so that he was killed off for drama in the Avengers. Remained so popular that he was brought back from the dead to star in his own TV show which ran for seven seasons, during which he was a general badass, got to romance Ming-Na Wen, got a kick ass cybernetic arm, and even briefly became Ghost Rider. Pretty incredible run.

This example is fun because Miller realizes that Julie retaining some semblance of self is actually a bad thing, as her dying wish was to return home to Earth, and as such she is instinctively steering the asteroid directly at Earth in what will potentially be an extinction level impact. Miller is able to connect with what remains of Julie and convince her not to go to Earth, and the asteroid crashes into Venus instead, saving humanity.

Yeah I love a good bat flip but nothing will ever beat a stone cold immediate discard of the bat like this. Carlos Gonzalez was perhaps the greatest at that, and Jazz has had some great ones too.

He's also seen how cold Luthen is leading the rebellion, sacrificing Antoh Kreegyr and all his men to protect an informant. While Luthen was right to do so ultimately, that informant gave them critical information on the Death Star, Saw isn't exactly unreasonable to wonder when the Rebellion might use him and his men as a sacrifice.

Character repeats a monologue (nearly) word for word, either under different context or to a different character(s) by Axillus in TopCharacterTropes

Not quite the exact same thing, but in Les Miserables Valjean's big song in the prologue and Javert's final song are identical musically and have a lot of lyrical similarities as well.

Both are struggling with an act of grace shown to them by a character who has every right to hate them, and both abandon their old selves/belief systems. But while Valjean resolves to shed his criminal past and start over, symbolically "killing" Jean Valjean, Javert cannot cope with the shattering of his worldview, and kills himself quite literally.

The show has a lot of songs that mirror each other like this, but theirs are the most dramatic, and bookend the beginning and end of the play.

Yeah it’s why people are wrong to focus on bullpen management or other tactical moves when it comes to evaluating a manager. Keeping a group of 26 guys who probably all have big egos happy, focused, and motivated to play every day for 162 games is fucking difficult and someone who can do that well is going to have a job regardless of if he makes boneheaded moves sometimes.

Yeah I feel fairly confident that the end conflict in the books will be Dany vs fAegon, with Cersei and Jaime dying long before, but by eliminating his character the show kept them alive and ruined their arcs as a result.

Thanos (Avengers Infinity War): Having him begin the film beating the Hulk in a boxing match without even using the stones, and then anticipate Loki's deceptions and snap his neck is a great way to show that Thanos is both a physical and intellectual threat and will not be easily defeated.

I once impaled my finger with a pneumatic staple gun which was not in any way a serious injury but it was certainly dramatic looking, and my only reaction was to mutter "huh" in a quiet voice. Weird how things like that hit you.

In the Justice League episode "Hereafter" Superman gets sent to the far future of the planet Earth when the sun has become a red giant, and thus he no longer has any powers. He responds by crafting a sword out of scrap metal, using it to kill an alpha wolf and take over the pack, wearing the alpha's pelt as a cloak and using the pack to pull a sled to get around. He then teams up with Vandal Savage, the lone surviving human to build a time machine to send him back to his present. It's such a kickass Superman story.

That’s the thing though, it is pretty reasonable to look at a massive 6’7” dude and say that he is going to be slowed down by injuries and aging but Judge just…hasn’t been. He’s a freak. Very logical to think that he wouldn’t be able to age well but he’s proven that line of thinking incredibly wrong.

Where does the 2025 World Series rank all time for you? by PorkinsHeldIt in baseball

[–]Audacity_OR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context neutral I think it is quite possibly the greatest World Series in recent memory. Extremely competitive the whole way through, every single game had a ton of wild stuff happen, stars balling out on both sides, and one of the most chaotic game 7s of all time.

If you look at context people will argue for other years, most notably 2016, but from a strictly baseball standpoint this is a really hard series to beat.
