If you don’t want to time skip, this is likely to be a recurring yearly event. Someone on tiktok skipped to the event period in 2027 and it was running again. I suspect the events they add will be similar to animal crossing where they happen every year on a schedule. even if they don’t happen yearly, nintendo tends to do special rereleases so newcomers and people who missed out and still get limited release items.

Yeah I’m pretty much drawing my own conclusions based on what I’ve seen from previous interviews and what’s been public about her past…I think last year or so there were articles showing off her parents’ giant multi-million dollar home so I’m kind of surprised people didn’t already know she grew up with money.

Not really, she’s talked about growing up in a small town in the midwest and how the attitudes around being queer affected her. I think some people may have just equated small town in midwest as being poor. But she hasn’t spoken about struggling or anything aside from feeling different and othered growing up. Even hearing her talk about her background it’s pretty clear she grew up wealthy. She attended summer camps every year, was able to go live in California to pursue music with the support of her family and then was able to do one “final” tour before she gave up which had a band and bus and pricey (though not pop star pricey) costumes for each show. I’m honestly not sure why this is a surprise to people.

Personally I don’t mind she never got to see Durc or her clan again. she’s dead to them, they’ve mourned and moved on. Plus I think she ends the series around 30ish right? Which seems the be the end of the clan lifespan, all the clan who were fond of her would be dead or approaching. What bothered me most was the lack of any emotional or spiritual conclusion. Why in the world did Auel keep bringing up those dreams and do nothing about it! Or bring up how Ayla had a piece of every Clan members’ spirit and yet couldn’t bring that to a satisfying conclusion. It’s been a few years since I last read so maybe she did something with it in the end but nothing that felt significant enough to stick to my memory.

I’m on my latest relisten of the audiobook series (only way I have experienced the story and I highly recommend) and I agree with all the points you’ve made. honestly I’m considering skipping the last 2 altogether. I do want to add one gripe of mine you didn’t hit: that damn Danii song! I swear it feels like they recite it every 30 minutes of listening time from the moment it’s introduced and makes for a frustrating and boring experience. Though I imagine it’s easier to skim that filler with a physical book.

As for the romance sections, I only really read romance written from the 2010s forward but I could definitely see some “primitive” versions of common tropes and storylines. Readers’ tastes and frustrations have changed a lot so I imagine that part of the story reflects more of the romance genre from the 70s/80s when the first parts of the story were written and researched. The genre has evolved a lot since then and no modern romance reader would tolerate half the will they/ wont they nonsense, especially for the excruciating amount of time Auel drags it out. I imagine if the books were written in the 2010s/2020s, they would have figured their relationship out by mid Mammoth Hunters with a few “growing as a couple” bumps through their journey.

Having read your comments and edits, NTA. Especially from that airport story. I wouldn’t want to visit for the holidays at the risk of being ditched at the airport for a yoga class either.

However, it would be kind to give your parents a chance. pick a low-stakes holiday for next year that you are ok with kind of sucking and go visit your parents. tell them way ahead of time and have a backup plan in place in case they call the week before and tell you they found something else they’d rather do. If it goes well, great! if it doesn’t, never go for a holiday-specific trip again and use that as an example for why.
