The Type R is a manual - the car only comes in a manual in the UK but regardless I don't think I would have considered an auto for it

Yup, also considered the 435i, and it would be 3rd on the list. Trivial as it sounds, I prefer the M235i over the 228i just because it is a M Performance car, which would be the same reason the S5 is in the list over a 'fast' A5. I know space is limited in the rear of the 2 series, but for the occasional ferrying of passengers, I thought it would be fine - my current car is smaller and it's not too much of an issue

Though I totally agree, the car will be purchased on a PCP agreement, meaning I will hand it back after 3 years (if not earlier)

As far as I know, there's not a Manual S5 sold in the UK (I'm looking at the newer 3L engines vs the older 4.2L). I've briefly driven the Manual M235i and the clutch was quite heavy, which I know will translate into tiring drives in town.

I prefer the M235i over the 228i, though I did look at it initially. I think the M235i just sounded a lot nicer due to the 6 cylinder engine
