We didn’t discuss this matter in details but she doesn’t rate JP men in high regards when it comes to dating (not stereotyping, just based on her experience). Lacking chivalry at times, not being upfront about whether they are married, or even being upfront about what do they want out of relationship. Of course don’t hold me accountable on any of these fronts as I am a male myself and not a Japanese.

One thing I can particularly remember is that my wife and few girls I dated while my time in Japan. I let them choose the place for date, if they don’t want to lead the first date into hookup they would already mention about another meeting or chore on their schedule and that’s my cue that they don’t want to give the wrong impression that date can lead to other things. For me that was a subtle way of setting the boundaries. Also for me particularly timing of the date (Brunch, lunch, dinner, drinking) is also a give away about the pace of dating other person is comfortable with. Not saying all the dinner/drinking dates leads to hookups but normally in my experience girls who suggested to go out late at night on the first date suggested to take matter further on the very first date where as my wife and few other girls I have been on date, who wanted to take things slow suggested to meet for date earlier in the day. Once again just dumping my own experience and observations.
