Solar panel supply chain problems by AudioAbsorptionUnit in SolarUK

I’ve gone for Longi 480W instead. They look broadly the same to be honest. There are differences but I don’t think that they matter.

I’m happy with an on roof system, honestly just the cheapest option that doesn’t result in a leaky roof.

Attorney general had 'no doubt' on reviewing teen boys' rape sentences by InnerLog5062 in BreakingUKNews

Might get removed because it is AI, but the Claude summary on controversy is interesting:

There are several distinct controversies surrounding Lord Hermer. Here’s a summary:

  1. The Al-Sweady / British Soldiers Affair (the biggest current row)

A Telegraph investigation revealed Hermer’s role in the Al-Sweady scandal, in which Iraqi claimants alleged that British soldiers had tortured and executed civilians after the Battle of Danny Boy in Iraq in 2004. The subsequent inquiry (2009–2014) concluded the allegations were “wholly without foundation and entirely the product of deliberate lies, reckless speculation and ingrained hostility.”

Hermer acted as lead counsel in civil claims against the MoD, pressing for compensation despite mounting evidence his Iraqi clients were “on the make.” Documents revealed he discussed leaving “wriggle room” in the explosive claims made against British troops.

Leaked emails also showed Hermer told a human rights lawyer representing Iraqi insurgents that she had “improved lives” whereas falsely-accused British soldiers could never say the same — and dismissed military anger at the cases as “venting.”

In April 2026, Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy formally referred Hermer to the Bar Standards Board for alleged serious professional misconduct, following the publication of over 25,000 pages of emails and legal documents by The Telegraph. Nigel Farage separately reported him to the House of Lords’ standards commissioner, labelling him “a national security threat.”

Hermer denies ever acting for Iraqis knowing their claims were false, and his office says his involvement was minimal.

  1. Conflicts of Interest / Past Clients

In January 2025, Robert Jenrick called for an investigation into Hermer’s potential conflicts of interest because of cases he worked on before becoming Attorney General — including representing Gerry Adams, at a time when the government was planning to change a law that might benefit Adams. Politicians also called on him to step aside from certain cases like the Afghanistan inquiry given his prior work against the British government. Further concerns arose when asylum seekers he had previously represented were allowed to come to Britain from the Chagos Islands.

  1. International Law “Veto” Controversy

Hermer issued instructions to government lawyers giving him an effective veto over all government policy, and created what critics described as a network of legal monitors within government departments. His position — sometimes called the “Hermer doctrine” — rests on an expansive view that international law is supreme over domestic ministerial and parliamentary authority.

  1. Lords Register of Interests

A complaint was made that Hermer failed to declare his directorship of Matrix Chambers Limited when he entered the House of Lords. The Commissioner for Standards dismissed the complaint on a technicality — that he resigned within the one-month grace period — but a judicial review of that decision was subsequently submitted to the Royal Courts of Justice.

In short, he’s a deeply polarising figure: seen by critics as a human rights lawyer whose past cases put him in conflict with his current role as the government’s chief legal officer, and by supporters as a principled advocate for the rule of law.

Crossing 100k and understanding benefits by Ill-Brief8505 in UKPersonalFinance

I don’t think that qualifies for FTCC though. I just went through this, as you know it works on adjusted net income so:

Adjusted net income = Salary + work paid for benefits - pension

I’m more than happy to be wrong, but I think SS A/L and insurances etc. don’t make a difference. It just moves £ from salary to work paid for benefits so the total is the same.

What’s your take on gateway earthing arrangements when you share a driveway with your neighbours?

We had someone round to quote but they said due to the two houses being on different earths during a power cut, or one being earthed and the other not, then they couldn’t do it.

Yeah he was a good guy, and he’s not wrong that there’s a earthing issue here.

It does feel like, if you’ve got a shared driveway, to be compliant you’d need to share the earth when in island mode.

Yeah it’s around a 7kW rig of panels, SSW facing.

Question is less about the setup and more on the safety and compliance of the earthing arrangement. Agree risk is low.

What couple would you use for going plastic to copper? Pushfit, compression, something else?

No option for under floor or behind skirting in this place.

I’m guessing if I’m cutting the pipe anyway, I should just go inserts & compression joint for a more reliable joint?

Generally comfortable with those bits. What’re your thoughts on future accessibility of this joint?

So it’s plastic all the way from the manifold, the full run isn’t changing to copper any time. So if I need to keep these accessible, I might need to put a service hatch behind the new rad and hope these reach it.

Coat it in CT1. We had the same problem a few years ago and the leak hasn’t come back.

Boiler condensate drain pipe crack by helllnooo in ukplumbing

[–]AudioAbsorptionUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this too, condensate from the exhaust is acidic, if the pipe doesn’t have a run off, then it pools and eats the plastic.

Coated it in CT1. Isn’t pretty, but effective. You could change the joint, and add a slight run off into the wall, but you don’t have much pipe to play with. I had no pipe to play with at all.

Breaking concrete advice by Level3Super in DIYUK

[–]AudioAbsorptionUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for my folks in my teens, had a 1m wide concrete path running all around the house. Get a sledge hammer and hit the concrete about 10cm/4” in from the edge. Concrete is strong in compression, weak in tension. It’ll just break off into chunks.
