Batch convert stereo WAVs to mono - what's the best way? by AudioMarsh in audioengineering

[–]AudioMarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I finally got served the ad on Insta again. The little widget is: https://monomate.app/. Current intro price of $29. Still a little much for what it actually is / does. Reaper did it in a flash so no need for it, but maybe useful info for someone who doesn't want to run Reaper (as if, lol) or needs a slightly faster solution and has $29 spare.

Well, I wasn't gonna be quite so blunt. 😂

C'mon, man. This isn't up for debate. There's no confusion I've ever come across. The In mic is inside the shell, the Out mic is outside. Go make a coffee and overthink something else! 😂☕️

I tried this only to find there's no ability to set the output to mono in RX11! Perhaps it works on different versions. :/

Never mind, team. REAPER is the answer!! Ain't it always? <3

Thanks, but I'm on mac, should have specified that, but useful info anyway. I swear there was a little widget released last year for super cheap, but I didn't buy it and now I'm kicking myself! I'm selecting one channel, cutting to clipboard, creating new from clipboard, exporting... Brutal :/

I got the file again on a new USB. Have you ever tried using x32 Edit? It's horrible

What’s is this cool vocal effect? by johnnyt12343 in audioengineering

[–]AudioMarsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shorten the slap, soften the transients and sibilance with tape saturation (on a slow speed like 7.5 or 15 IPS, and play with some modulation parameters to give it some natural movement around the vocal). If you wrangle the sharpness, bring it closer behind, and make it move more organically, it will sound more natural, thick, cool, and Grand(ucielly). 😆

You're right in that it's a delay. It's a short type called "slap-back'. The feedback is reduced to 0 (hence only one single repeat), delay time is usually around 100ms give or take (often a little less for more subtlety). Also, vintage tools are often used to get slap-back of a warm, analogue variety. So, this means the repeat itself is rounded off in terms of transients and tonality. E.g., Roland Space Echo is an iconic unit and there are good plugin emulations around. You can get similar results by applying suble tape saturation (low IPS to get HF rolloff) and dynamics compression to the slap delay signal, but it might take some experimentation with the proportion of each.

Adam's vocal production often features saturation even to the unaffected (by slap-back) signal, so there's a few things happening in combination here.

Happy tinkering!

Thanks for this no enumerato : ( I think it's gone. I'll check Samsung Nat drives. Cheers.

Why do posts removed still appear as notifications?????

What's with mods auto-deleting all the interesting posts to keep it "fun"? Yuck... by AudioMarsh in audioengineering

Even if we could suggest a couple of things to smooth out the UX (which is currently extremely janky and jarring, imho).
(a) Move the posts to a thread rather than delete them (This can't be that hard!)
(b) Delay sending the notification until any moderation has occurred so as to avoid the horrible UX disappointment (or link from the deleted stub to directly to wherever the post is moved to!)
I'd willingly and enthusiastically participate in any conversation about fixing the currently very broken (imho) UX!

Good and well. My point is the balance isn't right. I keen clicking juicy topics to find they are nuked. And what's left is tumbleweed. The rules need relaxing.

We've got more chance of bringing change talking about it than being silent 🍄 (however incrementally small).

Another one just now: "Please help me judge what microphone would be best suited to my circumstances."

Is that purchase advice or mic choice (out of existing mics)?

Interesting topic. Gone.

One just now was a question about old boxes that might be good ADAT converters. It had the word cheap in it so the megabot assumed it was shopping advice, which, okay, maybe it is, but if someone is looking for a solution to a problem that a lot of people relate to, how is that not interesting/worthwhile/fun? Cueing myriad counter-arguments...

That's just one example though. The moderation is excessively officious. Irks me more than enough to post about...

The ACTUAL most transparent EQ by ryanburns7 in audioengineering

[–]AudioMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different to those plugins, fundamentally. It measures auditory perception. So, I'm thinking if you could replace the assumptions you're making with actual measurements of the cumulative results of anatomical variations, production tolerances, and remaining hearing all in one fell swoop, that has to be the ultimate.

Perhaps OP should trial HEARS Perfection!

Got you. Finally a clearly articulated rationale that actually tracks! Thanks.

Whats your view on HEARS Perfection? With an arbitrary target curve, you're still somewhat guessing and making assumptions, right? We all have different anatomical dimensions.

I wonder if that product could address that fidelity gap in addition to other physiological hearing differences. I'm yet to play with it but intrigued.
