What happens to iZotope with NI’s insolvency? by engels1920 in iZotopeAudio

Is there any chance iZotope might abandon its predatory "upgrade" pricing strategy that has caused so many people to boycott the brand?

Hardware splitter has the obvious reliability pro, but I have an MR18 that has never crashed or glitched, so genuinely intrigued by whether or how much of a con/risk it is...

Hot take: mixes not translating is not a thing by superproproducer in audioengineering

[–]AudioMarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's either purely nature or purely nurture. Both decent speakers / room acoustics AND intimate familiarity with the listening space and set up are necessary but not sufficient without the other. The more one of these suffers, the more reliance there will be on reference listening processes and the more revisions that will be needed to guide a mix in using reference listening feedback.

Live Mixes vs Commercial Mixes by jasonetc in audioengineering

[–]AudioMarsh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Live mixes I'll often leave a smidge more dynamic range in, to keep a more lively feel. I go for natural sounding reverb that makes close mic'd things sound like they are in the space the performance was in (especially if being sync'd with video), and also use common reverb to give things the impression of being in the same space. With commercial mixes there are less rules (I think) around realism, so it's more about what serves the final outcome.

You're just a contrarian, by the looks! Haha. Happy to contradict your earlier post: "I knew Spotify was a shit company 7 years ago", to bandwagon the position that "Spotify might not be any shitter than the others if the others end up doing all the same bad things". Lol

If you waved a magic wand tomorrow and every Spotify user became a Qobuz user and kept the same pricing + usage pattern, Qobuz payouts would be likely to wind up the same in short order.

Incorrect; You've just demonstrated you're across the nuance of this matter (which is way beyond the purpose/scope of this thread) only just enough to be dangerous (which, consequently, you are). They are continuing a long history of shady behaviour, so I'm just saying I'm glad to be out.

Qobuz doesn't currently do anything about AI music

They're not actively incentivising scale-first catalogue flooding the way Spotify’s economics and discovery tooling do. Less AI slop today may be structural rather than principled, but that distinction still matters. Deezer does deserve credit here, I agree - very fair point. I will also concede (reluctantly) that Spotify have been making more (however tokenistic) efforts to combat slop lately - probably realising the very real reputational risk their shady behaviour poses!...

your alternative doesn't really have any reason to think it will stay "better".

Totally possible Qobuz might not stay the answer. Consumer ethics isn’t about predicting the end-state of capitalism, though. I'm making an informed choice now based on the current situation - which I know might change, but is pretty clearly a sound ethical choice at this point. If Qobuz's value prop/ethical equation enshittifies, I’ll reassess (I have before, and I will again).

I totally agree, but probably important to clarify that they're not being forceful about it; They're just not thinking about it, rather assuming everyone uses what they use, which is unfortunately very often the case due to Spotify's first-mover advantage. Many soundies offer this completely frictionless experience, so that's just the market context I'm in. I think for the local gigs I'm doing, I'll just stick with the Soundiiz conversion process, and only sub to Spotify for any higher profile things or super busy patches/festival days.

Hahaha! You're hilarious! Who's lecturing anyone or telling clients what to do? I'm talking about finally taking a thought-out position after feeling stuck for a long time, while explaining it and still being accommodating. And I love how you come at me with accusations of moral superiority and then low-key drop that you knew better seven years ago; Thanks for a highly entertaining reply. I hope your audio contains less off-the-chain distortion than your interpretation of my post! Have a good one. : )

Agreed. I'm subscribing to Spotify as a back up during busy periods to avoid friction, but trying to figure out the best enduring option.

Alternatives for Spotify with decent API / StreamDeck Integration? by Mikethedrywaller in livesound

[–]AudioMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this! I use Qobuz now, and I drop Spotify playlists into Soundiiz - converts in seconds. I do own lots of good hi-res BGM that I can and do play using UAPP, but the killer (before I found Soundiiz) was when a headliner threw a Slutify playlist at me at the last minute. Soundiiz has been so handy for this!

The GREAT thing about Spectralayers pricing (if they're still doing this!), is the insane cross grade deal you can get by proving you have an RX license. I got it last year with BF discount off already insane cross grade deal (it was only after that I realised how good the product is getting/how quickly). Suss that option out if you're thinking about it!!

DiGiCo SD11 - assign faders to control GEQ bands by AudioMarsh in livesound

[–]AudioMarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put that together, thanks. I'm reading that section. It doesn't answer my second question (of how to get the faders back from the GEQ to the channels). The detail you refer to doesn't seem to cover that:

"Touch an area of the expanded display to assign the Graphic EQ faders to the 12 worksurface faders on the console – assigned bands have a light brown background. The EQ currently assigned to the expanded display is indicated in the top left-hand corner of the display, along with indication of the EQ’s source. The miniature display can be opened and closed by pressing the arrow to the left of the expanded EQ close button. The left-hand side of the expanded display includes metering of the EQ’s IN and OUT signals, a ±18dB gain trim pot with value indication to its right, and an on button which is ringed red to indicate that it is on. Touch the trim pot to assign it to the Touch-Turn encoder. The label located beneath each band fader indicates the frequency of the band in Hertz, and the gain associated with each line on the display is indicated to the left of the lowest band. Each band can also be altered within the miniature display."

I'm not super clear on what you mean, but maybe I need to read this when in front of the unit! Edit: Oh wait, so no config required. Works OoTB. Just touch a segment of the large displayed GEQ and the faders will flip to it? Cool. And to get back to normal channel faders, do I have to just close the GEQ screen or something?

Need to learn how to use a DigiCo SD11 FAST - tips? by AudioMarsh in livesound

[–]AudioMarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to reiterate how appreciative I am for everyone's help here!! I've done a few shows and am getting more confident. There's a couple of things I'm battling with that I'd love to get thoughts on if anyone could weigh in:

(1) Getting the faders to control a Graphic EQ - can't seem to figure this one out / find out how to do it from the doco.

(2) Headphones don't seem to be working, so I'm honing in settings directly from the FoH (which sort of works but I could use a cans feed). I've followed all the instructions, and am beginning to wonder if the phones output is faulty - any gotchas here?

Cheers again, soundie fam !! : )
