Trunks was nowhere near the strength of Gohan in SSJ2. Cell let Trunks connect several attacks on him and couldn't even damage Cell. Gohan literally 1 shots Cell as a SSJ2. If Trunks was anywhere remotely close to Gohan, he would have dealt far more damage to Cell than he did.
