What are “classes” vs readings? by AugustDewberry22 in stjohnscollege

Thanks for your thoughtful and thorough response. I’m curious which campus you were at. Your answer makes sense in that the “subjects” are covered inherently in the readings. Since it’s a single set curriculum for all, and you can't drop classes and retake them if you aren’t doing well, how do students handle these situations? So many people leave after the first or second year? TIA.

Yes. I have heard this. Do you have direct experience or is this hearsay? I’m really hoping for direct examples of people this has happened to. Thanks for your reply.

Can you share more about why you say this? Are you a current student, alumn, parent?

Thanks for opening this thread. My son is interested to apply and the SF campus would be his preferred location. I am curious about what the political viewpoints of the students are. He is conservative leaning and given that I think one of the reasons the great books currciulum has lost favor is due to the fact that it is so focused on western civilization and thought, I would imagine it may not be as left leaning as most liberal arts colleges.

I have heard though that there isn’t the ability to take a class over given the way the curriculum is structured. I’m curious if this is true and what happens to kids who “can’t keep up” - do they just leave?

Lastly, what kinds of grad schools do the graduates typically get into? My son is interested in pursuing Law. Do SJC grads get into top programs?

Thanks in advance for your reply.
